Offenders (8)
“And this is because of Newton’s First Law!” my physics teacher ended dramatically, but I hadn’t even been listening to the story in the first place.
Physics was not a fun class to have first thing in the morning. I found it hard to stay awake, and everyone else in the class seemed to feel the same way as our teacher droned on and on from the front of the room.
Second period was much better. I had this class with Lena as well, and even though all the students didn’t seem to want to be there, the teacher always seemed happy. It was too bad I barely even knew what she was saying.
“¡Buenas tardes!” our teacher greeted us with a clap of her hands. “¿Cómo estan?”
The class greeted her back and answered her question unenthusiastically, just like they always did. Unlike everyone else in my beginning Spanish class, I was actually interested in learning the language.
“Hey, are you busy today?” Lena suddenly whispered to me as our teacher continued to lecture at the front of the room.
I blinked as I thought for a moment. “No,” I finally answered. “I’m not. Why?”
“We should hang out today,” she informed me. “We don’t have to go anywhere; we can just hang out at the DAU. I just don’t want to go home. It’s so boring there.”
“Oh, okay,” I nodded. “That’s fine, I guess. I don’t think Hank and Nay will have a problem with it.”
I didn’t see why they would. Lena was Nay’s niece and Hank practically acted like he was her uncle. They may not have acted like it sometimes, but I knew they were happy to see her whenever she decided to come and visit.
“Violet, Lena,” our Spanish teacher started with a smile from the front of the room, though I could tell she was annoyed. “Is there something you’d like to say in front of the class?”
Lena sunk down in her seat a little, mumbling, “No, Señora. No importante. Lo siento.”
Our teacher turned back toward the board, and Lena and I said nothing more. I might have liked the class, but I definitely didn’t like everyone’s attention on me. It made me feel a little uncomfortable.
After school, as I was making my way out of class to meet Lena, I was stopped when someone suddenly grabbed my arm. I turned in surprise to see that it was Tom, and I let out a small sigh of relief because I was afraid that it had been Vanessa or Lynx.
“Hey,” he greeted me with a smile, and I couldn’t help but smile back at him. “Are you busy right now?”
This was the last thing I expected to come out of his mouth, and it caught me off guard. So much so that I wasn’t even able to answer right away, and I probably looked like a crazy person to him.
“Um, yeah,” I finally answered honestly, even though I wished I could have said no. “Lena's coming over and we're going to hang out for a little bit.”
I didn't include the part where us hanging out mostly meant I was going to be in the exercise room training while Lena and I just gossiped, but I didn't think he needed to know that part.
He seemed disappointed. “Oh. I kind of wanted to hang out with you.”
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. He wanted to hang out with me. He wanted to spend time with me. I felt excited, but scared at the same time. I hadn’t ever really been alone with him before, and the only guys I had ever been around were Aiden, Dex, and Anthony. And I knew that they were not like regular boys.
“We can hang out some other time,” I told him now.
“Really?” He perked up at this. “Are you busy Saturday?”
He’d just asked me out. I think. I didn’t really know for sure, but that wasn’t going to stop me from saying that I was free on Saturday.
“I’m not,” I answered, a smile creeping its way onto my face. I hoped he couldn’t notice that I was actually very excited and very eager to spend time with him, even though I knew I shouldn’t have been.
Tom smiled back at me, and we just stood there for a moment or two, just smiling at each other like idiots. A few people glared at us as they moved by us so they could get through the hallway, but we still didn’t move.
“Let’s talk more about it later,” he finally said once he noticed that people weren’t happy that we were stopped right in the middle of the hallway. “Can I have you number?”
I didn’t even think twice before saying, “Yeah, of course.”
Maybe swapping numbers wasn’t the best idea since the phone I had was given to me by Hank and Nay, but I pushed this thought out of my mind as we switched phones so we could enter our numbers in.
Once we were finished, we parted ways, and I still had that goofy smile on my face. Did Tom really like me? I felt nervous just thinking about it. I hadn’t had a guy that liked me since, well… ever. I had no idea how Dex felt, and I’d never had a guy that liked me before I was locked in my room.
I had a date. I actually had a date. But… was it really a date? I didn’t want to read too much into this if it really wasn’t anything at all. I really had no idea if this was really a date, but I hoped that it was.
I wasn’t going to get my hopes up. If it was a date, then great. If it wasn’t, then that was okay, too.
When I finally met up with Lena, she seemed annoyed that I was late, but said nothing to me about it as we made our way toward her car. I was sure my teammates had already left, since they knew I was going to get a ride with Lena.
Once we got back to the DAU, Kristie was waiting for us. I was caught a little off guard, since I didn’t expect for her to want to hang out with us as well, but it wasn’t like I was just going to tell her to go away.
I went to my room and changed into clothes I could work out in while Lena and Kristie went ahead to the training room to wait for me.
Once I was changed into gym shorts and a tank top, I searched around my room for a hair tie. Just as I spotted one on the floor by my nightstand, my door suddenly burst open.
I spun around, and a glass cup filled with water suddenly went flying toward the now open door. It shattered against the wall, glass and water going everywhere. I looked down at my outstretched hand and clenched my fists. I thought I had gotten better at controlling my powers, but it was times like this that reminded me I still wasn’t very good.
I then looked over to see who had entered my room without permission, and I saw a very confused but impressed Dex staring back at me.
“Jeez, Dex!” I shouted, crossing my arms over my chest even though I was completely covered. Just a force of habit. “Don’t you know how to knock?”
“Sorry,” he apologized, and I dropped my arms back to my sides. “I wasn’t really thinking.”
I rolled my eyes. “Obviously.”
Turning back toward my mirror, I gathered my hair in my hands and pulled it into a high ponytail. The water would dry, but I was going to have to deal with the glass later. I’d save it for after my workout. Maybe I’d even have Dex clean it, since he was the one that scared me.
The aforementioned boy was still in my room, and I could see him looking at me through my mirror. I tried to ignore the fact that he was looking me up and down, but it was very hard to do so.
“It took you a little while to get back,” he said now as I continued to look over myself in the mirror.
“I stayed after to do something,” I simply shrugged, not telling him exactly what it was since I was sure he wouldn’t have liked it if he found out that I had been talking to Tom.
“Talking with Tom?”
I bit down on my lip. Was I that obvious?
“Yeah.” I didn’t even look at Dex as I tightened my ponytail. “So?”
“What do you even see in that guy?” he questioned me now. “You just met him a couple weeks ago and now you’re spending a bunch of time with him.”
I hadn’t really. I would spend some time with him at school, but that was it. Saturday would be the first time I ever hung out with him outside of school. It was actually really exciting.
But I couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed at what Dex was saying. “How are friendships supposed to start, Dex?” I asked snippily. “You have to spend time together, don’t you?”
Dex had nothing to say to this, because he knew that I was right. I knew that I wasn’t really supposed to make any human friends while I was at school, but Hank and Nay should have expected that we would form some sort of bonds with the humans we came into contact with. We might have not been human, but we were like them in the sense that we formed bonds as well.
“I’ll be in the exercise room,” I informed him now, walking right by him into the hall and out of my room. I could tell this conversation wouldn’t end well if we continued it, so I decided that it would end where it was.
Lena and Kristie were in the exercise room waiting for me, just like I knew they would. I placed my water bottle and towel down on the floor before making my way over to a punching bag.
“This’ll definitely be fun,” Lena drawled, looking completely bored out of her mind. “You’re lucky I like you, Violet.”
I shrugged. “Lucky isn’t the adjective I’d use, but alright.”
I punched the punching bag once. Then twice. Then I gave it a nice kick. This really was a good way to let any stress or anger I had out.
Kristie could have trained as well, but she chose not to and decided to keep Lena company instead. As she and Lena gossiped, I just hit the punching bag again and again. I then remembered that I had something I needed to tell them.
“So… uh…” I started, not really sure how I was supposed to word this. “Tom asked if I could hang out with him on Saturday and I said yes.”
Lena didn't seem surprised, but Kristie's face brightened as the blonde said, “Tom asked you out?”
“I wouldn't really say he asked me out…” My hands felt clammy and my mouth went dry at just the thought of it. “It's not like it's a date.”
Kristie giggled. “It could be!”
“Don't over think it.” I shook my head and made my way over to a punching bag. “He may just want to go out as friends.”
“I doubt it,” Lena sighed and plopped herself down on one of the two couches at the side of the room. Since she was not in the DAU, she couldn't use the equipment. “If he tries to get in your pants, don't let him, okay?”
I went to punch the punching bag but missed completely. “I—I wouldn't!”
Lena nodded. “Good to know our little Violet has a good head on her shoulders.”
“This is so exciting!” Kristie squealed, and my face felt hot. “Violet's going on a date!”
The door suddenly flew open, causing me to jump and Kristie to squeal. Lena didn't seem startled in the slightest.
Dex was standing in the doorway, and he asked, “What?”
“Violet,” Lena started in a very bored tone as she sprawled out on the couch now, “is going out for a romantic evening with Tom on Saturday.”
“It's not romantic and it's not even at night.” I found myself hiding behind the punching bag as my face heated up even more. I actually didn’t even know what time of day we were going to go out. “And I thought you didn't want me to even go out with Tom, Lena.”
Lena cut a look over to Dex. “Feelings change.”
“You can't go out with him,” my super strong teammate now said to me, ignoring Lena completely. “Hank and Nay won't allow it.”
Lena rolled her eyes at him. “Come on, Dex. Are you really going to snitch on her?”
His face was hard. “Maybe.”
“Stop being such a jealous sourpuss and let her have some fun,” Lena scolded now, though she didn't even bother sitting up on the couch. “Just because she can get a guy and you can't get a girl doesn't mean you have to be all pissy about it.”
Dex scowled at her. “I can get any girl I want.”
Lena only glanced at me before smirking at Dex. “You sure about that?” she questioned. “Because that doesn’t really seem to be the case.”
“You know what?” Dex snapped at her now. “That’s about to change.”
He then came around the punching bag, right toward me. For a moment, I thought he was going to hit me, but what he did shocked me even more. Instead of hitting me, he cupped my face in his hands and pressed his lips to mine.
Kristie squeaked. Lena didn’t even really have a reaction, besides her eyebrows rising. I, however, instantly grew angry.
“What the heck are you doing?” I demanded once I pushed him away from him. “What makes you think you can just kiss me?”
Dex looked at me as if I was insane. “You didn’t seem to have a problem with it a couple of months ago!”
For a moment, I didn’t really know how I was supposed to respond to that. I used to not have a problem with Dex kissing me. I used to like it when Dex kissed me. But now… I didn’t like that he kissed me without my permission. Like I was somehow his property or something.
“That was before…” was all I was really able to say. “That was before I…”
“What?” Dex spat now. “Before you met Tom?”
His tone made me feel stupid, like I was an idiot for feeling whatever I felt for Tom. But I couldn’t deny that I felt a connection with him, even though I didn’t know why.
I still didn’t know how I was supposed to answer, so all I said was, “Maybe.”
He didn’t like that answer, but I was done talking with him. I never got anywhere when I tried to have a serious conversation with him. He was just so difficult and there was no point. I was done.
I needed a drink, but I left my water bottle inside the exercise room as I left. I was hot and I was sweating, but I wasn’t going to go back for my towel or my water bottle. I’d just go take a shower and get them later.
I heard a pair of footsteps come running after me, and then another. Dex wasn’t following after me, but Lena and Kristie instead.
“You should have kept kissing him!” Lena called out after me, and I finally stopped to turn toward her once I got in front of my room. “What’s wrong with you?”
“I didn’t want to kiss him,” I answered, though I felt like this should have been obvious.
Lena shook her head, out of breath from chasing after me down the hall. “I didn’t stop going after Dex for you to just reject him like that!”
“You know what?” I snapped. “You can have him, Lena.”
She seemed surprised. “You don’t mean that.”
“I don’t want to kiss a guy who kisses a girl just to prove he can get any girl he wants,” I told her, though I thought it should have been obvious. “Does he thinks that’s what I want or something? What is wrong with him?”
Lena’s eyes softened, and she frowned. “Dex is just… stupid.”
“Yeah, I know,” I whispered, my mouth dry.
“Hey, let's go shopping for an outfit for Violet for her date on Saturday!” Kristie now suggested to lighten the mood, and I couldn’t help but make a face at the thought of it. “Not that what you usually wear isn't cute, Violet!”
I wasn’t so sure that was a good idea. I didn’t like shopping to begin with, and shopping when I was in a bad mood didn’t seem to be any better. But at least Kristie was nice enough to offer. She was just trying to make me feel better.
I opened the door to my room and entered, stopping when I remembered there were shards of glass I did not want to step on, even though I was wearing shoes. But when I looked around the floor for the cup I had shattered, nothing was there.
Dex had cleaned it up.
I felt tears fill my eyes and I covered my face with my hand. Why did I feel so stupid?
Maybe shopping was a good idea. I needed to get my mind off of things.
But before we could even move, we were stopped when something suddenly came crashing through the wall and into the hallway down the hall. I swallowed hard when I saw that it was a punching bag from the exercise room, where we had left Dex by himself.

Oh, man. It's been a month and I didn't even notice. And this chapter is short. I'm sorry. :(
During this time of year, I always have writer's block and difficulty uploading. Mostly because of school. And this year is even harder than before so I really have to focus on it.
