Offenders (27)

Sometimes I wondered if there was anyone else in the school that was superhuman. We'd found Nick, but was there anyone else? I couldn't help but wonder that.

There were tons of kids younger than my friends and me, so they'd yet to be recruited into the DAU if they were going to be. Did they know about the DAU, did they know about Redrum? Were they keeping it a secret as well?

It made me pay attention to a lot of my classmates. I had no idea who was human or superhuman. It was less common to be superhuman than human, but it was hereditary so if their parents were superhuman, the children could be as well.

Kristie played with her hair as my friends and I sat together at lunch. The purple had began to fade and Nay played on trying to dye it again before the dance. Since it was a lighter color than the blue, she believed it was more likely to go back to normal.

"So, guess who's going to be a chaperone at the dance," Aiden frowned as he sat down at the table with the rest of us.

"Who?" I asked.

"Malicius," he answered.

"Malicius is chaperoning the dance?" I questioned with a roll of my eyes. "Of course he is."

"Malicius?" Nick blinked, confused. "Who's Malicius?"

I nearly swallowed my tongue. I'd forgotten. Even though Nick was superhuman like my friends and me, he had no idea about the DAU or Redrum or that one of the most popular teachers at the school was actually evil.

"Malicius is the nickname we have for Mr. Grand," Anthony explained smoothly. It was moments like this where I was really glad we had a genius on our team. "Dex tried to call him malicious but instead of spelling it M-A-L-I-C-I-O-U-S, he spelled it M-A-L-I-C-I-U-S."

"Hey," Dex snapped, clearly annoyed that the lie made him look like an idiot.

"Mal-iss-ee-us," Nick sounded out, and I really wanted to stop talking about this is case someone else heard. "That just sounds weird."

I let out a sigh of relief when Nick dropped it after that. He might have known we had powers, but who knew how he'd react if he knew about the DAU? Lena wasn't happy that she hasn't been recruited. A lot of people weren't happy, I was sure. Lynx was one of them, and so were other members of Redrum. If you didn't get recruited, you most likely went to Redrum. I didn't want Nick to be like that.

"Yo, Nick!" a voice suddenly called out, and we turned to see someone I didn't recognize calling him over. "Come over here a second, will you?"

Nick rolled his eyes but got up and did as his friend asked. Anthony then seemed to jump at the opportunity to speak now that Nick was gone.

He cleared his throat. "So... Lynx asked me to the dance."

I nearly choked on my salad. "What?"

"Lynx just asked me to the dance," he repeated.

I didn't really know what I was supposed to say. Lynx had asked me a while before if Anthony had a date to the dance, but I never thought she was actually being serious. But now it seemed like she was.

"You didn't say yes, did you?" I finally asked.

"I'm not an idiot, Violet," he told me as he rolled his eyes.

"He's right; he's not," Dex shrugged.

"I know she had an ulterior motive to asking me," he informed us with a shrug. He then looked down and muttered, "A girl like that wouldn't be interested in me anyway."

I seemed to have been the only one who heard him and he clearly hadn't wanted any of us to actually hear it, so I stayed quiet and acted like I didn't hear a thing.

Suddenly, I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I turned to see it was Vanesa. She stomped right up and planted herself right beside me. I immediately groaned.

"I have a bone to pick with you!" she nearly shouted in my face.

Anthony blinked at her in surprise. "Does anyone even say that anymore?"

She completely ignored him as she stuck her manicured pointer finger in my face. "She attacked me!" she shrieked.

"I did not!" I denied.

"You so did!"

"I was there, Vanessa, and I can vouch that she did not," Anthony cut in before Vanessa could continue yelling at me.

She glared at him. "Of course you'd stick up for her. Losers stick up for other losers."

"Hey," Lena snapped at her. "Don't talk to him like that."

Vanessa leaned over the table and sneered at her. "This is none of your business so just stay out of it, blondie."

Lena looked like she was going to get up and beat Vanessa up, but Anthony quickly grabbed onto her arm to stop her from moving. She yanked her arm from his grasp and sat there in a pout.

"I know there's something wrong with you," Vanessa hissed. "In fact, I think you all have something wrong with you. You're all freaks."

My eyebrows furrowed. "What are you talking about, Vanessa?"

She paused for moment and began to dig through her backpack. She pulled out her phone and tapped on it for a minute or two before finally shoving it in my face to show me what was on the screen.

My eyes went wide when I saw what it was. It was footage from what seemed to be a security camera in the store that we had fought in. And in this video, you could clearly see the chair moving in its own before hitting Vanessa.

I felt my throat go dry. I didn't know what to say. Since I had barely moved my hand to make it move, it didn't look like I had been the reason it hit her. But it still looked very suspicious.

"I know you did that," she remarked with a sneer. "I don't know how you did it, but I know it was you."

I couldn't even think of what to say. I could call her crazy, but everyone at the table knew she wasn't. We all knew I'd made a big mistake.

"But I don't think you're the only freak here," she continued, pointing at everyone else sitting at the table with me. "I think you all have something wrong with you. You're all just freaky!"

"There's nothing wrong with us," Kristie practically squeaked, and it didn't sound believable at all.

I couldn't believe this. I just couldn't believe this. I had screwed this up so bad... How could I have done this? Not only to myself, but my friends as well?

"Vanessa, just get lost," Aiden snapped, and for once I actually agreed with him. "No one wants you here."

Vanessa lifted her nose in the air. "Fine. Come on, Dex. We're leaving," she huffed, turning around as if to walk away as she waited for Dex to come with her.

Dex looked confused. "Um... No we're not."

She stomped her foot. "Come on, Dex!"

"I'm not going anywhere with you, Vanessa." Dex leaned back in his seat, as if cementing his spot there. "Just leave me the hell alone."

Vanessa looked so shocked and horrified by what he had just said to her that I had to bite down on my lip to stop myself from laughing.

She turned back toward me and practically snarled. It almost scared me. "I'm going to expose you," she threatened as she looked around at all of us. "All of you. For the freaks you really are."

She spun on her heel and stormed off, whipping her long dark hair over her shoulder as she went. We all watched her go in silence.

"Can I go knock her out so Anthony can erase her memory?" Lena growled once Vanessa was finally out of sight.

"Will that do any good? She has video evidence." Anthony ran his hand through his dark, shaggy hair in frustration. "And Hank told me not to mess with people with brain injuries or head injuries. It could explode their head or something."

"Seriously?" Aiden asked, his eyes wide.

Anthony shook his head. "No, but I wish."

"What are we going to do about this?" Kristie asked, her voice quiet because she was scared.

"I don't know," Anthony shrugged. "I'm not the one who got caught!"

"We could always push her down the stairs like Violet did to Freddie," Aiden suggested, and I felt my blood boil.

"I did not push Freddie down the stairs!" I hissed, not loud enough for anyone who wasn't at our table to hear, but loud enough for Aiden to hear how angry I was at his comment.

"Shut the hell up, Aiden. You don't know crap," Dex growled, his hands balling into fists. "All you do is talk shit about things you don't even know about."

"Talk shit, get hit," Lena spat.

Dex rolled his eyes. "One day."

We all sat there in silence for a few moments, none of us knowing what we were supposed to say about what had just happened.

Finally, I gulped. "So I may have screwed up."

Aiden's eyes widened. "May have?"

"I didn't know there were security cameras!"

"You shouldn't have been doing that in public!" Aiden turned away from me and toward our blonde friend. "The same goes for you, Lena. If Violet was able to be caught on camera, maybe you were, too. And yours would be much more obvious."

I knew I'd made a mistake; it was obvious. I'd made a huge mistake and it felt like there was absolutely nothing I could do to fix it. She had video evidence... And even though it didn't clearly point to me being the culprit, it was still scary.

"I really hope they didn't get what Lena did on tape," Aiden sighed as he turned back to his food. "If they did, we're really screwed because her powers are much more obvious than telekinesis."

I shook my head. "No more talk of our powers at school," I ordered, and Aiden seemed slightly annoyed that I was taking charge without even consulting him. But he wasn't acting like much of a leader so I felt like I needed to. "We have to be extra careful, and not only around Vanessa. We don't know what she might tell other people or what she might do."

My friends nodded in agreement, even Aiden. From then on, we were going to be much more careful with what we did and said.

"What's up with you guys?" Nick questioned with a grin as he came back and sat down in his seat. "I leave for five minutes and you all get somber."

"It's nothing," I waved away, swallowing down the lump in my throat. Nick didn't need to know about the problems we were facing. We didn't even know if Vanessa suspected him or not.

Nick shrugged, taking his seat once again without asking any other questions, which I was really glad for. I didn't want to talk about it anymore anyway.

"Oh, my God," Lena suddenly gasped, her eyes going wide.

"What?" I blinked, confused.

There was a look of utter terror on Lena's face. "What is he doing here?" she whispered hoarsely.

"Who?" I asked, looking over my shoulder to see who she was looking at. My blood went cold when I saw who it was. "Oh, my God."

"What? Who?" Nick questioned, just like he always did when he didn't understand what we were talking about. Which was an awful lot. "Who are you talking about?"

Standing only a few yards away from us was Colton, the guy who had stalked Lena. The guy I had beat to a bloody pulp. The guy whose memory Anthony erased all the way back to age five. What was he even doing here?

My teammates and I were practically speechless. Lena looked absolutely terrified. Nick just looked confused.

"Colton?" Nick inquired as he craned his neck to look at him. "The poor bastard who got the crap beaten out of him and lost his memory?"

"I wouldn't call him poor," Lena murmured, her head down.

Nick blinked at her. "Did you guys have a thing or something?"

"You could say that," Aiden shrugged, his mouth full of food.

I kicked him from underneath the table. "No, you could not say that."

Nick seemed confused, but didn't ask any other questions because he could tell how uncomfortable Lena was. All of us felt uncomfortable, but none of us could feel the same way as Lena after everything she'd been through with him.

"Why is he here?" Kristie asked as she turned to look as well. "I thought he didn't go here anymore."

"They're trying to jog his memory," Nick explained, and I guessed that it made sense, but it didn't make it any better. "He's slowly getting better and better everyday."

"Isn't that..." I couldn't even think of what to say.

I turned back to look at Colton, my eyes going wide when I saw that he was looking over at our table. And not only that, but he was looking right at Lena. She noticed this immediately and her face went white.

"I think I'm going to vomit," she groaned.

As if it couldn't get any worse, Colton left the group of adults he was with and made his way over to our table. Lena looked like she was about to have a panic attack, and I didn't know what we were supposed to do. I'd just said we couldn't use our powers at school anymore but right then I really wanted to just take my lunch tray and throw it at him.

He stopped next to our table and just stared down at Lena. My friends and I looked at each other, ready to spring into action if we needed to. Nick just sat there, completely oblivious to the fact that anything was wrong.

Colton continued to just stare at Lena. Dex was about to stand up and say something until Colton finally spoke.

"You're very beautiful," he informed her.

Lena gulped, her eyes wide. "Uh... Um..."

"She thanks you," was what I said, wanting this creep to just leave us alone. He clearly had the mind of a small child now that Anthony had erased his memory, but that didn't make him any less creepy.

A silence fell over all of us and it felt very awkward. Colton clearly wasn't all there, and he still had some cuts and bruises from when I had beaten him up. I didn't feel bad for hurting him, but I still hated that I had lost control.

"There's a dance coming up," Colton continued, and I felt like ripping my hair out because I knew where this was going. "Can you go with me?"

Lena's eyes went wide and filled with tears. I'm sure she thought of the comment Aiden had said to her while we were shopping for dresses, because that's immediately what I thought of.

"She already has a date," I answered for her so she wouldn't have to speak. I could tell she was trying her hardest not to shake.

"It's me," both Nick and Anthony said at the same time, causing Nick to glare at my nerdy teammate.

Colton seemed confused, but his brain injury seemed to make him brush it off as if it was normal for a girl to have two dates to a dance. Before he could say anything else, one of the adults he was with finally called him back over and he made his way over to them.

The table went quiet, none of us having anything to say. Lena stared down at her lap and the rest of us tried to not make it obvious that we were staring at her to see how she would respond. I felt awful for her.

"Do you think he remembers anything?" I whispered to Anthony.

He shook his head. "There's no way," he answered. "He still has no recollection of what happened but clearly he still has an attraction to Lena."

"Doesn't make him any less creepy," I murmured, turning back to my food.

Lena let out a deep breath, composing herself quickly. The tears in her eyes disappeared and her regular unamused look returned to her face. It looked like she hadn't just faced someone that absolutely terrified her. I couldn't believe it.

"I'm okay," she assured without anyone even having to ask her, and the rest of my friends and I looked at each other because none of us really believed her. But I knew how stubborn Lena was, so if she said she was fine, then she was going to continue to act fine no matter what anyone said to her.

Suddenly, there was a tap on my shoulder, causing me to jump in surprise. I turned around to see that it was only Tom, and I let out a long sigh of relief. I was afraid that it had been Colton.

"Hi," I greeted him, glancing back at Lena to see if she was still okay. She seemed perfectly fine. That was good, but I just didn't know how believable her demeanor truly was. She'd been so freaked out before that I just couldn't believe she was perfectly fine now.

"Come spend the rest of lunch with me," Tom now offered with a grin.

I looked over at Lena, silently asking her with my eyes if she needed me there with her. She waved me away, still seeming to be perfectly fine. I nodded at her.

I couldn't help but smile up at Tom as I turned back toward him. "Okay!"

I waved goodbye to my friends and followed Tom. Aiden made a kissy face at Dex, who then punched him so hard in the arm that our team leader fell out of his chair and onto the ground.
