On one hand, I get it. Some of the hate was always going to come with the decision he made. Some of the backlash was inevitable, he knew what would happen the moment he transferred without telling us. But there's a difference between knowing something is coming and actually living through it. Having thousands of people boo you every time you touch the ball, having your every mistake amplified, having entire arenas waiting for you to fail—that's brutal.

On the other hand, I mostly just feel sorry for him.

Being a public figure in a sport like this means living with thousands of opinions about you, many from people who've never met you. Some of the criticism is deserved, some of it isn't. Either way, no matter how mentally tough someone is, it's hard to believe none of that follows you home.
