Yvanna, Jess Vargas was on my timeline three times in the last hour.
Did you get anything?
Yvanna Adriano
no, boss
sorry
Lillian Duenas
No?
Why not?
He was talking to reporters. You were right there.
Yvanna Adriano
well, he was being polite to the press that ambushed him. that's different from wanting to be interviewed
Lillian Duenas
That's the same thing in our line of work.
Yvanna Adriano
boss, i don't think it is.
there's a difference between a public figure being cornered on his way out and actually consenting to an interview. anything he said out there was PR, it wasn't going to be real.
Lillian Duenas
You would've gotten something real with your unconventional questions.
A quote from Jess Vargas watching his son go 9-0 would've been gold, Yvanna. You had the access and you didn't use it.
Napaka-sayang. Wasted opportunity.
Yvanna Adriano
i know, but he was there as a father. whatever he said to those reporters wasn't for us.
Lillian Duenas
You're not there to decide what's for us and what isn't. You're there to get the story.
Yvanna Adriano
boss, i didn't think it was the right call
Lillian Duenas
Yvanna
I'm going to be honest with you. I'm starting to wonder if your judgment is as sharp as it used to be when it comes to this team. You have more access than any other reporter covering the UAAP right now. Actually, you had the BEST access in that building today and you came back with nothing.
Opportunities don't wait for the right moment. You grab them or someone else does—in this case, other publications.
Yvanna Adriano
i understand
Lillian Duenas
I'm saying this as your mentor—you are a good writer, but right now your writing is the only thing working. Brilliant writing needs material. Material needs sources. Sources need you to actually go after them. Words only carry you so far without the reporting to back them up.
Do you want to be a journalist or a nun applying for sainthood, Yvanna? Because right now you're acting like one and getting paid like the other.
Yvanna Adriano
i hear you, boss. i'll be more proactive next time.
Lillian Duenas
Sana nga may next time pa that he's there and talking to press.
I want to see your revised draft by tomorrow.

Hey, you. How was my shooting?
i've seen worse
That practically means a 10/10 from you, I'll take it.
We'll go grab dinner first—meet you at Retro Night? :)
yes
see you later
You okay, Mai?
I can spot your sungit face from here.
can i ask you something
Always.
does it not bother you that i've been asking you questions since i was a freshman?
I mean
It used to, when I didn't know you. Given how persistent and relentless you were.
Every question felt like you were looking for something to use, and then I read your articles and realized you weren't looking for ammunition. You were looking for the actual story. Those aren't the same thing.
I can respect that even when it was inconvenient.
Now, it doesn't bother me, because most press don't care about getting shit right—they care about numbers and getting it first.
Why do you ask, Reporter Barbie?
that's a really nice way to look at it, thank you
but your dad got swarmed on the way out today.
Yes, I saw.
He hates that. He always says he's done playing, he's just there to watch me.
But these people can be vultures. Or just doing their jobs.
and am i not a vulture to you?
Yvanna, you were right there when my dad was surrounded and you didn't move.
i could've gotten good material from him.
Yeah, you could've, and I wouldn't have held it against you if you did—he was talking to press, it's good material, it's your job. But I knew you wouldn't.
Bakit? Ano sinabi sayo ng editor mo? Did she get mad you didn't?
kind of, but she'll get over it
doesn't it bother you that i have an editor who wants things from you?
I want YOU to want things from me.
jem.
Sorry.
Well, no, not really.
I think I know you well enough to know the difference between what Lillian wants and what you'll actually do with it.
that's really generous of you, because lillian's not. my internship review is coming up
i need to wow her with this
You've been wowing her with your performance already.
yes but im shooting for the contributor spot
The difference between what you are now being...?
mas mataas na sweldo hahahah
but in all seriousness, it's also recognizing me as a legitimate reporter with actual press credentials rather than an intern, so like my foot in the door for my future career
it's pitching the stories i want and being assigned stories beyond the usual intern workload, continued mentorship, getting access to bigger sporting events like potentially covering national teams, SEA Games, FIBA qualifiers, olympic-related events, etc
i get other sports/media relations/contacts and im trusted with longer features, investigations, and exclusives
all BEFORE graduation
it's the dream
Ahhhh
You put more into this than anyone I've met. If they have a spot, it should be yours.
I'd be more surprised if they didn't offer it to you. You care about the work too much not to get it.
pakisabi sa editor ko
i think may mga kalaban ako for it hahahah
and it's a whole thing, like she has to endorse me to mari, the EIC, i go through an interview again, etc
i'll do ANYTHING to get it.
You'll get it, Yvanna.
Want me to relay a question to Dad?
thank you, but no
using personal connections is the easy way out. i'd rather not get the quote than get it that way
maybe i should just give her an exclusive or first to report or some shit
are you sure wala pa talagang gf/partner si teo piencenaves? 🤩
Wala. And stop asking, I don't like your interest in him.
And I figured you'd say no. I just wanted you to know the offer was there.
Let me know if there's anything I can help with, but I already know and believe this article is going to be the best thing you've written.
We're leaving na, I'll see you sa Retro Night, Lois.
thank you.
see you, clark.
:)
