A Darlington Easter

(^^Sorry, don't know Quinn's last name. Is it Marshall??)

The Saturday before Easter, Rachel was sat on the sofa with Amaris and Jakob curled up either side of her. Mitch was sat on Quinn's knee on the chair next to on side of the sofa and on the chair on the other side, sat Emily.

A movie was playing - Hop - and a bowl of crisps, mixed flavours, was on the table in the middle.

"Mmm. Cheese and Onion and Prawn Cocktail is quite nice," Emily grinned, having eaten two crisps at once.

"So is Salt and Vinegar and Barbecue," Rachel laughed.

Jakob smiled and smelled his handful of crisps to make sure he had cheese and onion next. He leaned over and tipped the rest into Mitch's hand.

As the movie came to a close, the children were getting quite tired. Though only Amaris admitted it. Rachel carried Amaris upstairs while Quinn walked with Jakob and Mitch. Emily followed shortly after stealing another few crisps.

They all went upstairs and got into their pyjamas.

"Into bed," Quinn smiled. She got smiles in return. "But," and they all turned to look at her, "Brush your teeth first." They all sighed and plodded into the bathroom.

Rachel giggled and stood by the door to make sure they all did them.

Emily came over to Rachel and wrapped her arms around her and said, "I love you, Mummy."

"I love you too, Em," Rachel smiled, "But I also love your teeth to stay white. Go on."

Emily huffed and walked back to the sink and picked up her toothbrush.

Once all the children were in bed with the lights out and the doors closed, once all bedtime stories had been read and toys found, Rachel and Quinn went downstairs again.

They went to the kitchen, lifted the top off the island, which no one else knew was possible, and took the Easter decorations out from inside.

Rachel hung streamers almost everywhere and blew up balloons while Quinn put window stickers over every window and hung fairy lights around every room.

Next, they both took a basket of chocolate eggs wrapped in foil and hid them around the house.

The next morning, luckily a bright day, both parents ran outside to hide the next four baskets of eggs in the garden and hang streamers around the willow tunnel, the rabbit hutch and the bench around the pond.

When they'd finished, they made their way inside again. Once they were back in the warmth of their just-smaller-than-average home, Quinn gave Rachel a quick kiss on the lips, "Happy Birthday."

Rachel grinned happily and hugged her, giving her a quick kiss back. She whispered excitedly, "Thank you!"

They sat on the sofa together, snacking on Cheerios, until 8am. Then, they went upstairs to wake up the children.

"I'll wake up Emily and Amaris, you wake up Jakob and Mitch," Rachel smiled.

"That's the way it always is. I'm not complaining but, don't you want to switch it up?" Quinn laughed.

"Uhhhmmmm," Rachel pretended to think. "Nah."

After laughing for a bit, they went to each door together instead. Quinn knocked duh duh-duh-duh duh and Rachel added the last duh duh.

They did this for each of the five doors. The fifth was their own because hey, why not. Not that there was anyone there but it was one more door to do the fun knock on without anyone feeling like they were being rushed.

Each child came out and hugged both parents in turn. "Ha, Emily hugged me first!" Rachel laughed.

"Well Mitch hugged me first!" Quinn laughed.

"Mums! We love you both equally, now let's go do Easter!" Emily grinned, cartwheeling down the stairs dangerously.

As soon as they reached the bottom of the stairs, the five who were children mentally charged outside eagerly. Rachel stopped once she was at the bench and sat down, keeping an eye on the kids.

Quinn jogged outside and joined Rachel on the bench.

Matthew, Mya, Amber, Emerson, Cairo, Espie, their kids and Kaelie and Jaime's kids knocked on the door seconds later. Rachel bounded to the door and opened it wide, "They've already started, sorry!"

Everyone ran back through to the garden and started looking for the chocolate eggs.

Once everyone agreed they'd found them all, they sat to count the eggs. Matthew had 18, Mya had 40 (she did train as a secret agent for a while but don't tell anyone- it's a secret), Amber had 20, Emerson had 12, Cairo had 11, Espie had 10, Thaddeus had 18, Malia had 16, Blake had 15, Rachel (2) had 21, Sky had 18, Farren had 25, Juliette had 19, Ryan had 20, Ace had 2, Icarus had 18, Skylar had 24, Brennan had 14, Biscuit had 7, Antoinette had 29, Kiera had 20, Claudia had 12, María had 16, Valencia had 20, Jemmy had 15, Scout had 17, Tonio had 28. That made 485!

"There's 15 left!" Rachel and Quinn shouted excitedly together. That meant it was a race between those two to find the ones left over. Since they hid them, they knew where they were so as they watched everyone previously, they were watching where everyone had gone and could roughly tell which ones had been missed. They both had a competitive streak so it was great to watched them charge through the garden. At the same spot... head first...

Rachel finished with one big bruise and 8 eggs. Quinn finished with three smaller bruises and 7 eggs.

"Well, that's all 500," Matthew laughed.

"And Mya won.. again.. so she gets," Rachel started a drum roll on her knees and everyone joined in. Everyone carried on as Quinn ran into the kitchen. She came back with her hands behind her back and as she brought them around in front of her, Rachel said, "The giant egg!"

Mya grinned and accepted her giant chocolate prize. "But of course, that's not all for today." She smiled at Rachel.

"Of course! We have the indoor search, come on everyone!" Rachel grinned. She sent everyone inside to find the other 250 eggs.

Mya roller her eyes and mined the word 'later' to the other adults. They nodded and everyone ran inside.

Rachel stayed behind a few minutes to feed her rabbit.

Matthew found 1, Mya found 84, Amber found 1, Emerson found 3, Cairo found 3, Espie found 1, Thaddeus found 1, Malia found 3, Blake found 1, Rachel found 1, Sky found 17, Farren found 1, Juliette found 69, Ryan found 4, Ace found 0, Icarus found 1, Skylar found 1, Brennan found 1, Biscuit found 17, Antoinette found 26, Kiera found 2, Claudia got 1, María got 1, Valencia got 1, Jemmy got 1, Scout and Tonio got 0. That was all of them.

"As you all know, there's no prize for the inside hunt," Quinn smiled, "Instead, we get to share out all the chocolate eggs we found!"

There was a big cheer from everyone, especially those who'd only found one or none. "But how will you share 250 between 29 of us?" Rachel (2) asked.

"By playing a game of whack-the-eggs-as-if-they're-pinãtas-over-a-giant-bowl-outside," Rachel grinned happily. It was the first year they hadn't had 290 so she'd had to be a little more creative with her dividing skills.

When all the messy part was over, there was a giant bowl with left over chocolate and a multicoloured bat in it and 29 people full of chocolate sat around it.

"Now that's how you do Easter!" Emily smiled. She's said that every year since they'd done Easter at Auntie Camilla's. The way they did it had never changed but everyone had taken it for granted until the one year they decided to switch it up and go to Auntie Camilla's house for Easter. They loved going there but not when Easter egg hunts involved real eggs and much more disgustingly flavoured mess. Though, she'd happily have a real-egg hunt every Easter if it meant Auntie Camilla was still here.

A few hours and many conversations later, they all got up and walked back inside to have lunch. Breakfast was the chocolate.

I'm tired so blah blah blah, lunch was great and they went on a walk round hills and fields.

Then they all went back to Matthew's house where the whole house had been decorated with Rachel's favourite decorations. Streamers, balloons, jelly sculptures, glitter, sequins, stickers, posters, banners, party cannons and fluffy rugs.

Everyone shouted, "Surprise!" They all cheered and then they shouted, "Happy Birthday, Amber!"

Rachel turned to look at Amber and just smiled slightly and clapped, "Happy Early Birthday?"

Everyone burst into laughter and said, "Gotcha! Happy Birthday, Rachel!"
