Chapter 3

*Nyx*

"Azriel and Nyx will stay here," Father says as we gather around the massive table in the dining room above the Hewn City.

Mother doesn't look pleased with this decision, but I know they already talked about it. They would never take something like this lightly, especially after the talk Father had with me earlier today. Eris had left, and Kier was left to do whatever it is he does.

Azriel gives a nod, but I don't respond.

"If Kier is doing something he shouldn't, you alert me immediately. If Eris returns, alert me immediately. Something about this doesn't feel right," Father says as he looks between the two of us.

"If nothing happens by the end of the week then we will pull you both out," Mother finishes. Though it is obvious she is more worried about me than Azriel.

She has always been apprehensive about leaving me alone, despite being a hundred years old. Father is the same way, though he knows what he has to do. The people needed to know someone is watching them. Someone is still here and able to act should someone step out of line.

After giving more instructions on what to do while Azriel and I are here, the rest depart. Mother pressing a kiss to my head before winnowing back to Velaris.

"I will send my shadows out for today. It may be best for you to go through recent records of the Autumn Court to see what Eris may be after," Azriel says as he begins to walk out of the marble palace.

It's my turn to nod. He doesn't give me a chance to respond before he's gone.

———

I wake with a start, the sound of a voice still ringing in my ears. A male one. Laughing, and calling me names.

I had fallen asleep at the desk, the most recent trades of the Autumn Court laying out in front of me. They had gotten me nowhere. Besides, if Eris wanted a private transaction with Kier then it would have been off of their books, and therefore off of ours.

Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I stand and make my way to my room. The vision still not leaving my head. The room was dark and cold, and something told me there was great pain, but I didn't feel any. No, I was fine. Whoever was in my dreams was not.

Allowing you the dream to finally leave me, I get ready for bed and crawl under the covers. My only wish is to find out who I am seeing every night. Whoever it is needs help. Or needed help. Perhaps it is all in my head, and it is nobody, and just a dream. Keir's past antics coming to haunt me.

Sleep takes me once again, and I only hope to see through the person's eyes once more.
