Chapter 71
I was brushing the horse after I had worked it when I heard a wolf howl; I knew it wasn't normal. I quickly brought the horse back, closed the door, and walked out when I bumped into the woman Ellie was arguing with earlier.
"Who are you?" she asked, confused. "Im Kaylee. Ellie hired me to help with the horses," I told her truthfully. "My brothers and I are new here. We just started today at the house with Ellie." I smiled, and she nodded when we heard a scream and growling. I knew it was unexpected; she and I looked around but couldn't see anything. "Stay here," I whispered, walking towards where the noises were. When Dean ran towards me. "You heard that too?" he asked, and I nodded. "Yeah, what happened?" I asked, worried. "Carl's Dead," he told me. "Well, shit," I mumbled. Dean and I walked over to Sam and Ellie, who were standing with the Sheriff, where a body lay under a sheet with blood splatters. "Im so sorry, Ellie. Carl seemed like a good guy." I said, standing next to her.
"The best," she replied. "You said Carl had his head almost ripped off?" Sam asked. "And you are?" Sheriff asked. "Just curious," Sam replied, since we knew it wasn't a good idea to say our names to a law enforcement officer. "He knew. He works here." Ellie quickly said before either of us could say anything stupid. "Carl died badly, so let's leave it at that. They've been reintroducing wolves around these parts, but I never thought," the Sheriff said, but couldn't finish the sentence. "This wasn't a wolf. I need to make some phone calls. The whole family is flying in for this." Ellie said, walking away with her phone in her hand.
I turned away, walking behind Ellie. I made myself known when I reached her and asked if she needed help. Still, Ellie shook her head and sent me back to the barn; when I walked inside, I heard somebody talking, and when I looked closer, I saw Sam and Miss Cassity talking, so I walked over to the bedroom but stayed at the door listening until the voices quieted down. Dean and Sam spoke in the room next door, but I ignored them since I felt pain in my shoulder. Dean walked in while Sam followed him. "What's going on?" I asked. "Carl didn't sell his soul for what we thought it was for his wife," Dean told me, who wanted me in the conversation. "His wife?" I asked, sitting up and leaning on my elbows. Sam told us what happened when he talked to Carl's wife, which I only heard partially.
Dean wanted to leave, but Sam convinced him to stay in case something else happened. The next day, while I finished on one of the horses riding around the yard, cooling it off, I saw a black SUV drive in and park. As I rode by, with a nod, I greeted them and noticed they looked similar to Carl and Miss Cassity, meaning that this was the rest of the family. At the entry of the barn, I saw Sam, Dean, and Ellie talking; Ellie introduced the rest of the family to them, and as I reached them, I heard the rest of one of the daughters. "She ran away just before Alice and Carl tied the knot and lived in Paris," Ellie said as I approached them. "How do you know all this?" Sam asked while I got off the horse.
"I've been working on this farm since I was 13, and I've got eyes. Okay, tonight is an all-hands-on-deck situation. I will need one of you inside, serving dinner and pouring many drinks." Ellie told the boys and me. "What should I do?" I asked her. "You can help me prepare the food," Ellie told me. After a quick shower and fresh clothes, I came into the house and helped Ellie with the food, which was a lot of meat and a few side dishes like vegetables, bread, and mashed potatoes, while Dean was on the grill and Sam served the drinks, which were mostly wine. As I cleaned off the first few dishes from the table, the family complimented us on the excellent food. I saw Sam's annoyed face while he poured wine into Cindy's glass, who was the older daughter. As fast as I could, I walked out of the dining room and back into the kitchen while I heard the family talking. I grabbed one of the plates and walked outside, where Dean stood at the grill. "The family is awful to each other," I told Dean while he stood there flipping steaks around. "Just like us?" he asked back. "No worse. I mean, from what I heard, they just wished for each other to die, which is just awful." I told him, leaning against the grill, when Sam walked out and brought some news he had heard. "So one of them seriously did a deal with Crowley?" I asked. "That's what they said. He swung through town about ten years ago to the day." Sam told us. "So what do you think tea and crumpets made these deals, and now he's collecting?" Dean asked. "Or he sends his hell dog to go fetch. That Dude is the king of hell. Must be below his pay grade."
I mumbled. "Any Idea who signed the dotted line?" Dean asked, but both Sam and I shrugged after exchanging looks. "No Idea." Sam and I said that when Dean's phone rang, it was Kevin. He told us to kill the hellhound by dipping glasses in holy oil. "Don't worry about me. Im going to take care of them." I nodded to the door, meaning the family turned back to Dean. He walked off and returned with two glasses a few minutes later.
