Authors note: juxtaposition
This week's technique is juxtaposition. Juxtaposition is an act or instance of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast. So it's a fancy word for contrasting two objects or characters.
So, where do I use juxtaposition? Well, the most obvious place is when Adonai and McCartney are walking together in chapter 6 of 'Red Oak Fall'. Adonai is a tall, muscular, fair-skinned, healthy athlete; while McCartney is a tiny, thin, dark-skinned girl with a horrible disease. Also, in 'Red Oak Fall' the scene where Adonai and Lauren collide almost sending Lauren flying is a minor example based on their contrasting sizes.
A beautiful example of juxtaposition would have to be scene 3 of 'The Evil Inside'. There in the cemetery in the pouring rain Jonah and Kate are standing side by side at her father's graveside. Jonah is much taller and much older, but, for that moment, he's the only person in her world.
A spiritual example of juxtaposition is found in chapters 2 and 3 of 'The Wilds' (book/episode #14). Jonah tells a young Michael that a huge hulk of a warrior-like man like Hunter can take on a hundred demons, but an old, gray-haired, retired schoolteacher can defeat a thousand demons with her prayers!
Finally, an example of a non-character juxtaposition would be the storm that "heals" McCartney in chapter 11 of 'Red Oak Fall'. Before the storm it's a cool, clear beautiful day, but when the storm arrives at the school with its wind, rain, and clouds it turns that part of town dark. Then after McCartney is "touched" the storm leaves and the bright sunshine and stillness returns.
There will be more usages of juxtaposition in future 'Genesis 64' books, so watch for them!
See if you can add some juxtaposition to your writing.
