Chapter 5
When Tuesday morning came around, I still felt like crap but I managed to pull myself out of bed. Even though school was like a personal hell to me, I did not enjoy being behind in all my classes.
I was running late and I was destroying my room looking to put something over my tank top. After throwing my hands up in the air in frustration and grabbed Joes jacket. He wouldn't mind if I wore it. I slid it on and the jacket smelt like spice.
By the time I got to the car(so glad Carl picked it up yesterday) I had about fifth teen minutes before school started. I started the car and drove to hell...I mean school.
It didn't take long to get there, I just like to get there before the rush of people. I took my usual spot in the back away from everyone else. As I stepped out of the car a pulled my hood up and blasted my headphones loud enough that I couldn't hear the outside world.
I went to home room and went to my seat in the back. I didn't feel like doing anything today. Maybe if I sat with my head down no one would notice me.
It work well in my first period. My calculus teacher was blind as a bat and she couldn't see more than five feet from her nose. My second period didn't work as well, my physics teacher called me out and had me answer some impossible questions.
People were still nasty to me, calling me a freak and what not, but a lot if them seemed distracted and they were slacking. But hey, if they left me alone I was happy.
My 3D art class was one of my classes where no one bothered me. I still kept my distance from the other students just to be on the safe side. I could only imagine what would happen if the school found out about my second life.
My forth period was my language class. The school requires every student to take a foreign language. I chose French back when I was a freshman. It seemed like a good idea, but now people insulted while using a beautiful language.
"Caprice" people said under their breath as I walked past. Caprice meant freak, I don't know why they favor that word, but it got real old real fast.
The class was unsuccessful either way. Half of why that is is because I couldn't pronounce any words, and the other half was I had no motivation.
When the bell rang for all of us to go to lunch, I was like a zombie walking through the halls. The cafeteria was one of my least favorite places in the school along with the gym. I stayed back along the was until the line died down.
There wasn't a lot of people in the school, roughly around four hundred. It didn't take long until the line barely existed anymore. I walked to the end and went through the line with ease. Everyday I would grab a container full of salad along with a green apple and a bottle of water.
After I grabbed everything I needed I went to my table that was in back of the room. When I got there, I noticed something strange.
There was a boy sitting there.
The boy didn't notice me approaching him, he just sat there stabbing at the salad that sat before him. He had his hood up so I couldn't see his face. His sleeves of his grey jacket were pushed up to his elbows and brackets clanked on his wrists.
"Your in my seat" I said loud enough so the boy heard me and he lifted his head. "So can you leave?"
The boy laid his fork down and his shoulders started to shake as if he was laughing to hard. He turned to face me and he pulled back his hood which revealed his straight black hair. That familiar smile with the pierced lip flooded back memories from a few nights ago. I was right though, his eyes were as blue as the night sky.
"Joe" I breathed. I was stunned to see him. "What are you doing here?"
He chuckled. "Well enjoying this fine salad of course. Sit down" he said while he pushed the chair across from him with his foot.
"I'm serious" I said as I slipped into the chair. "I know you didn't come here for the food. Who would? Are you stalking me?"
"To be honest, I thought you were at least twenty one" he said as he took a bite of his lunch.
"Why would you think that?" I asked while pouring a packet of ranch dressing onto my salad.
"Don't you have to be twenty one to join a derby team?"
I shook my head. "It's eighteen here. "But let's get back on track, what are you doing here."
"New student, baby" he said as he took a sip of his water.
"Out of all the places to go, why here?" I asked.
"My dad got a job offer in Phoenix and he moved me and my brother here."
"You have a brother? What grade is he in?" I asked.
"He's a senior as well, he's over there talking to the girl with pigtails" he motioned.
I turned my head to see a boy in a white polo shirt. The boy was laughing with some girl sitting in his lap. He had the same straight black hair as Joe, they even had the same face.
I look back at Joe. "Twins?"
"Twins" he says as he's peeling his orange.
"He seems like a jerk" I say and Joe stops peeling and looks at me. "No offense."
Joe smiled. "Actually we share more things than the same face. Bands, movies, hobbies...he's just afraid to show it."
"Then why is he other there and not here?" I asked as I started to eat my apple.
"He's a people person" he shrugged.
"Okay" I nodded. "So how do you like the school so far."
He shrugged. "People here are jerks what can I say."
"Yeah, I could have told you that" I said to him. "Where are you from?"
"Seattle" he told me.
I whistled. "Little far from home. How are you adjusting to the heat?"
"Very badly" he admitted with a smile. "I'm starting to think I should toss my jackets in a bag and just leave them."
"You know that jackets are removable, right? There's this little thing called a zipper" I told him.
"Well I did have just my shirt on but it was 'inappropriate' for school" he mocked.
"What was on it?"
"A whole lot of 'profanity' is what they said, but it just says fuck across the top."
"No" I said sarcastically. "Why don't you just ask your brother for a a shirt?"
"I find it offensive that you think I would wear a polo shirt" he gasped then smiled.
"I might have a extra shirt in my locker" I told him.
"Could I borrow it. I mean, I know I'm hot mess, but pretty soon I'll become a hot mess puddle."
"You so conceded" I said as I stood up and grabbed my empty salad container. "And yes, you can borrow a shirt if you need one that bad."
My locker wasn't that far from the cafeteria, just down the hall and to the right. And I was right, I did have an extra shirt laying on the floor of my locker.
"Here" I said as I handed Joe a My Chemical Romance shirt.
Joe looked at it and chuckled. "I have the same shirt, it's sitting on my desk at home."
I smiled. "Then I guess that we should twin every now and then."
"Yeah, I have a feeling that we both own a lot of the same shit" he chuckled.
"I wouldn't doubt that, now go change your shirt" I said as I turned to my locker and closed it. When I turned back around I was greeted by a shirtless Joe. "I meant change in the bathroom."
"Why no ones around."
"Well I am" I said as I covered my eyes.
He chuckled. "You can look now. I'm decent."
"About time" I said as I unshielded my eyes.
"Hey" he pointed at me. "Your wearing my jacket."
I look down at my chest. "I guess so. I'd give it back to you, but I can't."
"Is your shirt inappropriate for school as well?" He smiled.
"No, it's..." I hesitated. I looked up and down the hall to see if there were any stragglers. There wasn't. I pulled up my sleeve to show a bruise that wrapped up and down my arm.
"What is that from?" He gasped. "Does it hurt."
"It's from derby" I told him as rolled my sleeve back down. "And no, it doesn't hurt."
The moment I finished that sentence I was shoved into a locker. "Oops, watch it freak."
I was shoved again but this time I fell on the floor. When I looked up I saw a girl trailing one of her fingers down
Joes chest and then slip a piece of paper into his hand.
"You okay?" Joe said as he helped me up.
"I'm fine" I said as I dusted myself off.
"You could have taken that girl down" he said.
"I can't" I sighed.
"Why not?" Joe asked. "Are you going to get them get away with that?"
"For now, yes. But their fuel to my fire."
"Okay" Joe said as the bell rang. "Class time."
