Chapter 3

I turned around as I saw a pair of headlights beaming down the road. The car was still at least a good mile away so I pulled off my skates and slid my converse on. Hopefully I could get a ride into town.

The car was coming closer. And closer. And closer...

...Then it turned on a dirt road.

I stood there with my mouth open in shock. After all the years I lived here, never have I ever once see a car drive down there. And frankly it was just appalling.

I walked on not bothering to put my skates back on, the cold air already abused my feet twice within the hour. Now all I had to do was get home and out of the cold.

But that felt impossible.

My feet made soft pats as I walked along the road. The only sound that could be heard were the crickets and my chattering teeth.

Not soon enough my legs started to feel numb. I guess that it was my fault because I was wearing thin jeans.

I grabbed onto the nearest object which was a telephone pole and dropped my bag. I started to feel light headed and dizzy. My body started to shut down. I gripped my eyes shut.

After a minute, I was so out of it that I didn't hear the car pull up behind me, or the door slam shut, or someone asking me if I was okay.

I jumped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. "What?" I asked as I took a step away

Before me was a boy who looked no older then twenty. The moon shined off his straight black hair. He had a lip ring on his bottom left lip. His eyes were the same color as the night sky from what I could tell. He was so...

"I asked if you were alright" he said as he looked at me from head to toe. "Are you?"

"Not really" I said through chattering teeth. He noticed my pulling my jacket closer to my shaking frame. His eyes widened as he pulled his jacket off himself and wrapped it around around me.

"Come on" he said as he placed his hand on the small of my back and pushed me to the car.

"Wait, my bag" I said as I started to reach down to get it but a hand flew down and picked it off the ground.

"I got it" he said as he slung the bag over his shoulder.

When we reached the passenger side he opened the door and helped me in. Once I was seated, he touched my cheeks with the back of his hand and frowned. He walked out of my view and I head him open the trunk. He returned a minute later with a blanket in his hands.

"Here" he said as he placed the blanket on top of me.

"Thank you" I said to him and he smiled.

I watch him walk over to the passenger side and then climb in. When he turned the key in the ignition the the car roared to life, along with a familiar song was playing.

"I love this song" I said.

The boy looked shocked. "Really?"

"Yeah, I was listening to the album before my car crapped out" I laughed.

"Do you know what that means?" He asked as he looked at me and and I shook my head. "Dramatic duet."

And if I do say so myself, it was pretty dramatic.

"And this is not the end for us" we ended the song together and started to laugh.

"What's your name?" He asked.

"Jane" I told him. "What's yours?"

"Joe" he said. "Well Jane, if you don't mind me asking, what's with the roller skates.

I smiled as I considered to tell him or not. It wasn't like I was going to ever see him again. " I'm on a roller derby team."

"Wait a second" he began as he looked at her face. "You were playing in that old factory tonight."

"You were there?" I asked.

"Well sure, I love roller derby" he smiled. "I thought you looked familiar."

I smiled that someone actually remembered my face, it never happens.

We pulled into the town and Joe looked at me. "Where do you live?"

"You can let me out here" I told him as I reach into the bag seat and grabbed my bag and purse.

"Are you sure?" Joe asked.

"Yeah" I said. "You could be a stalker or an axe murderer."

Joe laughed. "How did you know?"

"Woman's intuition" I told him as I reached for the car handle. "Thanks for the ride."

"Wait a second" he said before I stepped out.

"What?" I asked as I closed the door again.

"It may be my stalker instincts, but can I get a picture with you?"

"Well that's not scary" I laughed.

"To be honest, I want to prove to my friends that I meet you. We're all derby fans" Joe shrugged.

"Sure" I said. I was a little flabbergasted but I got over it.

"Can you lean in a little?" Joe asked as he held his phone in the air. I did what he asked and the flash went off a few seconds later and there was a click.

"You get it?" I asked as I looked over his shoulder.

"Here" he said as he handed her his phone.

I looked at the photo and I had to admit, we both looked good and Joe looked very handsome. "I guess this is goodbye."

I opened the door and a gust of wind blew in. "Stay warm."

I was about to walk away when I remembered I was still wearing his jacket. "Almost forgot" I said as I started to take it off.

"Keep it, you need it more than I do" he waved at me.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Yeah, I have enough jackets" he smiled. "Bye Jane."

"Goodbye Joe" I said as I closed the door. I slipped my skates into my duffel bag and the I took one last look at Joe before I watched him put the car into drive and speed off.

Once the car was out of view I turned around to look at the apartment complex building behind me. I pulled out my keys and walked through the front door.
