Chapter Fifteen || Game Over

HOLDEN'S POV

As we drove off to the diner in silence, my mind was ablaze with millions inquiries for Skye as to why she would ever come with me. But it was best that I keep my mouth shut, or she would probably change her mind and get out of the car as soon as possible. Albeit she might just leave me anyway.

I would understand if that happened. I mean, I totally deserved it.

"So, how's life?" I asked awkwardly, trying to lighten the mood.

"Did you seriously just ask that?" Skye scowled.

"Maybe?"

"Whatever," She scoffed. "I can't believe I agreed to this."

I kept silent. She just needed to cool off. I was her long-term bully, after all. It was kind of unexpected, but I probably should've been able to figure it out. Come on, Skye is literally the closest name EVER to Skylar. I guess I was just blinded by my liking to her. But she doesn't even notice me.

Which brings me back to my thoughts of eliminating Ben. Should I ship him off to Antarctica?

Sounds like a plan.

"Holden!" Skye snaps. "The light has been green for, like, 30 seconds already!"

"Jeez, I'm sorry." I pressed my foot down on the pedal and we started up once again.

She scoffed.

"Look, Skye." I turned to look at her for a second. "I'm getting really tired of your attitude. You're acting like everything in the ENTIRE world is my fault-"

"That's because it is!" She exclaimed.

"No way. I'm sick of arguing with you and I'm tired of trying to get you to like me. I'm not like that guy back in freshman year. I changed. And yes, before you say anything like 'people can't change no matter how much they try' or whatever bull you're going to blurt, people CAN change. For better or worse. I know I've changed for the better. The only reason I've been somewhat mean this year is because I heard your rude comment about me in the beginning of the year. Something about being a monkey with a pea brain that can't even kick the ball, I believe. That hurt my feelings, so I wanted to get revenge. Things didn't go as planned, obviously. I started to actually like you. Like, like like. But now, that you can't even go a second without insulting me, I'm done. I'm done, Skye - or Skylar. Whichever. Just get out of my car."

I pulled over to the side of the road and let her out.

"Bye." She said weakly.

I didn't answer.

SKYE'S POV

To say the least, I felt terrible. I didn't know that everything I said had cut that deep. But he had done worse to me, so I convinced myself that I didn't need to apologize.

Which was the wrong decision.

Holden and I haven't spoken in four days, and that's bad because communication is crucial in soccer. And we were opening the game in just three days.

"Holden, we need to talk." I sidled up next to him in the hallway.

He kept walking, eyes locked in on the classroom two doors up. So I did the only thing I could think of. I tripped him. He fell to the ground and glared at me, a cold fury radiating from his eyes. Yet he still said nothing. Standing back up, he sprinted into the classroom before I could speak with him.

This occurred several more times throughout the day, but still no words have spilled out of his mouth, not even to insult me. Maybe he had changed, but I didn't know it because I had caused his rebellion before he even got the chance to be himself.

"Holden!" I called, spotting him a few people before me in the lunch line.

Quickly, he paid for his lunch and ran out of the cafeteria. I sprinted after him, kicking into high gear.

Picking a door, he high-tailed into the room with me in pursuit. I grinned, knowing that he had picked the wrong room to hide. The janitor's closet.

I had him cornered now. "You can run, but you can't hide." I said the cliche line from every horror movie.

The door slammed shut behind us. "Scratch that," I announced. "You can't run either."

He narrowed his eyes at me and I couldn't help but notice how good his light blue shirt looked on him. How perfect his hair looked. How toned his legs were. Did he have abs? He stared at me, an emotion flickering in his eyes. I couldn't figure out what it was.

"Stop raping me with your eyes, Jones." I stated gingerly.

And I got my wish, alright. After he closed his eyes and leaned in, pulling me into a soft kiss.
