Reaching Out
January 22,
Jessica was two weeks past the halfway mark in her pregnancy. Ever since Jessica's first day of work she has been trying to focus on the pregnancy and being happy. It was hard for her to be gleaming with joy when she worried about her son each and everyday. There was so word from him. Not a text, a call, or a visit. Jessica didn't expect him to come around. She didn't even want and apology, all she wanted was to hug him and bring him home. It was wishful thinking, Jessica was starting to believe that whatever she had done that was so terrible would make him never come home. She was still oblivious to how he became shut an angry, troubled kid.
For the last month Albert, Danny and Dorthy have been lying to Jessica and Sam. They are the only three that know where Sean really was. Jessica and Sam thought he was at some type of rehab for behavior.
Dorthy and Albert don't know how or when to tell Jessica. It was a touchy subject and they knew very well that Jessica wouldn't take it easy. They kept it to themselves for selfish reasons, Jessica would be angry with her parents and they didn't want that. For now, they kept quiet.
Sam conspired with Jessica's sisters on throwing her a surprise baby shower. Jessica had bought a few pairs of outfits over the last few months. Olivia was in on the surprise too for her mother.
Everyone was determined to bring light back into the family, under the circumstances.

"Today we are going to do a 3D ultrasound. It's a little bit more exciting because the baby looks like a new born in the 3D scan." Jessica's doctor says
"Really? With my first two, many many years ago, we never got 3D pictures!" Jessica smiles brightly
"This is exciting... I wanna see her face." Sam smiles
Jessica takes Sam's hand and looks up at his face with the biggest smile.
"I'm glad we got your blood pressure down, but I still want you to check it everyday. Until the baby is born."
"Of course." Jessica says
"Why baby shower plans?"
Sam's face starts to blush and he laughs.
"Knowing my family, they have something planned." Jessica says
"You just don't know when or where?" Her doctor laughs as she gets ready for the ultrasound.
"Exactly." Sam says

After the appointment Jessica and Sam sat in the car going crazy over the ultrasound.
"It looks so real." Sam says
"Well, SHE is real." Jessica says
"I know, but.... this is our baby girls face. A realistic image." Sam says
Jessica giggles and kisses Sam on the cheek.
"That's our baby." She smiles
"I can't believe we made a baby together."
Jessica sighs "This won't just be a baby... this baby is going to be different. She'll need us 24/7... maybe for the rest of her life." Jessica tears up
"Baby... don't cry."
"I love this baby no matter what. It's just not fair that she can't have a normal life. I can't help but blame myself."
"Jessica, it's not your fault. This is God's plan. He has a plan. And what did we agree on? That we will give this girl the most normal life possible. That she may be different, but she is still like everyone else." Sam says
"I signed us up for classes..." Jessica says
"Of course you did." He smiles
"So we are prepared. Even though nothing prepares you for a baby."
"Of course." Sam says
"So you'll go? You know, you've never had a baby." Jessica says
"I'm aware. That's why I don't have greys yet." Sam chuckles
".... but I took care of my sisters kids when they were babies." He adds
Then.... Jessica's face goes blank.
"Jess?"
"You should invite your sisters to my shower." Jessica says
Sam sighs and shakes his head. "No...."
"If you don't, I will." Jessica says sternly
"Why?" He whines
"Because, family is important. They are your family. They are all you have." Jessica says
Sam couldn't say no to Jessica. As much as he didn't want to, he had to.
"Fine."
"Good and you need to visit your parents too. We need to make plans to go out and see them for the weekend. Bring Olivia and Logan too. Do your sisters even know that we are married? Adopted a boy? That I'm pregnant?" Jessica says crossing her arms
Sam's relationship with his sisters is very rocky. Because of how poor their realtionship is, Sam never comes to town to visit his sick parents. Deep down Sam is a very sensitive man, he was once very close with his mother and father. The fact that they don't know who he is kills him, so he doesn't visit anymore. He pays the medical bills and the cost of their assistant living. Jessica has been trying for a year now for him to reach out to his sisters, but he always refuses, until now.
"Jessica, you don't understand."
"You're right, I don't understand how you don't speak to your sisters, the only family you have." She says sternly.

The next day at Jane's house:
"I really think that we have everything we need. Food, cake, and decorations are all under control." Ann smiles
"We just need to figure out how to bring her to the venue." Jane says
"I can bring her. I'll tell mom that I want to go shopping and then after we can get lunch and I'll bring her here. Easy." Olivia says
"Wait.. wait!" Logan says sitting up
Jane, Ann, and Olivia were on the party planning committee for Jessica's surprise baby shower. It was two days away and they were all finished with planning. They knew Jessica knew she was having a shower thrown for her, but she didn't know when.
Logan, being the sweetest boy wanted to be apart of his mom's big party. So the girls included him on the fun.
"Livy, you have to bring me too!" He begs
"Logan, we went over this, you come to the party later on with daddy and all the flowers." Ann smiles
"Baby showers are more of a girl thing with lots of girly games and girl gifts." Olivia giggles
Logan shakes his head and sticks out his tongue. "Eww girls!"
"'re hanging around your daddy too much!" Jane smiles

It was the day before the shower and Sam just left a message for his sisters inviting them to the shower. He wasn't going to make much more of an effort to get a hold of them, so they either show up or they don't. The thought of them coming had his stomach in knots. He didn't want drama from them, especially on a day that was all about his wife. He just prayed that they wouldn't come.
Sam was in the barn by himself thinking about his parents. He really tried to keep them off his mind, but it was hard at a time like this.
Olivia had just come home from school and saw Sam alone, so she decided to go talk to him.
"Hey Sam, you look gloomy." Olivia says wrapping herself up in another jacket.
"Hey, I'm okay. Just thinking."
"Let me guess, mom made you call your sisters and you got in a fight? She was telling me how she wants you to invite them to the shower and meet all of us." Olivia pulls up a bucket, flips it over and sits next to Sam.
Sam chuckles "They didn't answer, but that's not it. Really, I'm fine. You should go warm up inside."
"Please, Sam. When I'm upset you never leave me alone. So I'm not going anywhere."
Sam chuckles "Thinking about my sisters just makes me think about my parents. I wish they were here. Well here here, as in not sick. Your mom and her family are so close. I consider your grandparents my parents. In a way I feel quilty, but they aren't my parents anymore. They are in their own world now, Olivia. It's very hard that none of you knew them like I did." Sam says with sadness
"I know, but they are still your parents and when they leave, you'll regret not visiting them more. When my dads dad, my grand pop, died my dad beat himself up for a long time for never visiting him when he was sick. That was just as hard as losing him. And who knows, maybe they will remember you or memories of you when you see them. And for your sisters, all sisters are bitches. I mean my mom, Ann, and Jane all get into it from times to time. No family is perfect. I mean look at ours. And I don't want to see you live with regret either." Olivia says standing up. She leans over, gives Sam a big hug, then heads on inside.
Everything that Olivia just said really made Sam think more. It opened up his eyes.

That night-
Jessica had made dinner for everyone after work. The family was all together so Sam thought it was the perfect time to make an announcement.
"So everyone, we are going on vacation!" Sam says
Jessica almost spit her food out and looked at Sam with wide eyes.
"really? I want to go on a plane!" Logan smies
"No, son. We are driving."
Olivia smiles at Sam and he gives her a wink. She knew exactly what was going on.
"Excuse me?" Jessica says
"Next weekend we are going to Stillwater." Sam says proudly
"Stillwater?" Logan says
"Yes, Stillwater. That's where your grandparents live. We are going to visit my mom and dad."
"I have more granparents?" logan asks
"Sam, I'm really happy that you're doing this." Jessica says happily
"Yes, you do. And you're going to meet them. But Logan, they are sick." Sam says
"Sick?" he pouts
"They aren't sick like coughing sick." Jessica says
"Your grandma and grandpa have a memory problem. They have a hard time remembering things." Sam says calmly
"Oh, well mommy says im unforgettable!" Logan says proudly
Jessica and Olivia start to laugh.
"And whenever mommy's baby shower is, your aunts will be there and they are staying with us!"
Sam ended up getting a hold of his sisters who agreed to come. Them staying at the house was news to Jessica.
"Oh! That means I have to clean!"
"We got it, mommy!" Logan giggles
"Logan, can you tell mommy when my baby shower is?" Jessica whispers
"NO!" He yells
"Come on, don't pick on our weak one!" Olivia giggles
"But logan loves mommy and will tell her anything." Jessica flutters her eyes at Logan.
"No mommy!" He says sternly
They spent the rest of the night laughing and having fun at the dinner table. Jessica was really proud of Sam for reaching out to his sisters and planning a trip to visit his parents. This was a big step for him/
