Chapter Eighteen
Nothing much else was said that day. They all must have heard the yelling and thought not to get in the way. Malcolm eventually left but I stayed the rest of the night in the laundry room. I woke up on the small couch Monday morning in dry debate. Do I go inside, or stay here a while? Someone came in to keep me from deciding.
Angus sat down on the couch next to me but I didn't acknowledge him. I couldn't just yet. He leaned back against the armrest so he was facing me. His foot found its way in front of my face and stayed there. I ignored it at first but he kept waving at me with it which made me smile a bit. He laughed to himself and pressed his big toe against my nose. I tickled his socked foot and he laughed a little harder as he pulled his foot away. I smiled at him, glad he was going back to his old self, at least for now. He smiled back and spread his arms and legs out. "Come here." I eyed him suspiciously not liking what he was suggesting. "It's not what you think, come here."
I scooted back and sat between his legs, in an appropriate and safe way mind you, and leaned against him as he wrapped his arms around me and put his head on my shoulder. "See? That's better."
"Why the sudden change of attitude?" I asked uneasily.
"You were right. I should have told you what was botherin' me. But now I guess you know why I didn't." I nodded my head. "'M sorry."
"There's nothing to be sorry about-"
"Well, yes there is-look. I acted like an arse this entire week and even before then and-and I yelled at you, I yelled at Malcolm, at everyone."
"But I yelled right back."
"You had every right to." He squeezed me a bit tighter. "I nearly killed myself over it."
"That was really stupid you know, scared the crap outta me," I said. He smiled.
"Didn't mean to you know," he said. "Just wanted to drink the stress away I guess and... I guess I went too far huh?"
"Yes you did mister. Way too far."
"Too far for you to forgive me?" I looked to see him giving me a puppy look. Good grief, you're killing me Young!
"Never," I smiled. "But do that again, I'll kill you myself." Angus laughed and I turned around again.
"You uh- didn't tell Ellen did you?" he asked quietly.
"Not yet. We never got their phone number. They come back tomorrow, we'll tell them then." Ellen had to know after all. "There's something else we have to tell her you know," I said.
"What's that?" I gave him a look. "Oh! Oh, yeah. That'll be harder for sure." He shifted a little. "I, heh, probably shouldn't have done that." He rubbed my arm in silence for a while. "Don't regret it though."
"Why'd you do it?"
"Hmm?"
"Why'd you do it though? You knew you shouldn't have, you were mad at me..." He shrugged.
"...couldn't help myself..." he mumbled.
"I certainly wasn't expecting it anyway."
"But that's what makes it fun! What fun would it be if you knew what you were getting for Christmas, hmm?" he smiled.
"Bet Mal told everyone," I said. Angus laughed a little and said with a smile,
"I'm gonna kill him." I took Angus' right arm, which was wrapped around me and drew shapes with my finger. "What are you doing?"
"Drawing a picture." I drew a stick figure man flying a kite, a sun in the corner, (duh) and finally a cloud.
"Real cute," Angus said after I finished.
"You can't even see what it was!"
"Well actually Picasso, I meant you," he said quietly. I blushed glad he couldn't see it.
"Thanks," I mumbled. We sat in silence for a while. Muffled talking was heard in the rest of the house.
"Thanks for holding me up that day," Angus finally said. "For saving my life."
"Anytime Angus, but hopefully that was the last," I answered. Another while of silence.
"You know, we forgot to do something at the party last week."
"What?" I turned to face him and he gave me a funny smile. "No, no no no. No way in hell."
"I don't mean that, I'm not gonna try anything on you again okay? No, I meant-" He let go of me and got off the couch holding his hand out. "-we forgot to dance."
"I can't dance," I said in disbelief.
"Neither can I, come here." He grabbed my hand and pulled me to him. He wrapped his arms around me again so we were hugging. Then he led me around the floor as if we were dancing. "I love you, you know."
"I love you too," I smiled.
"Always have."
"Really?"
"Told you the night you left, but you were still asleep."
"Well..."
"What?"
"I wasn't asleep. I heard you right before I fell asleep."
"You did? Geez, you could have said somethin'," he laughed. "Seriously though, I do love you."
"I believe you. I love you too." He smiled and kissed my nose. I laid my head on his shoulder, buried my face in his neck and we kept dancing. Then I heard him humming something. I kept real quiet to see if I could recognize it. Sure enough.
But I can't help, falling in love with you.
"They're probably in here," Malcolm called to the band. They'd been looking for Angus and Hannah for a while with no luck. Malcolm opened the door to the laundry room and saw the two dancing. Well sort of. More like hugging while spinning in a circle. They didn't notice him which Malcolm was glad of. He smiled and left.
"They down there?" Cliff asked.
"Yep."
"What're they doin'?" Phil asked in suspicion.
"Dancin'."
"Dancing?" Malcolm nodded. "I don't believe you."
