"So taking the angle equal to 37 degrees, the maximum horizontal distance would be 20 metres." I furiously scribbled on the piece of paper lying on the table.
Daniel had his eyebrows furrowed as he tried to understand my not-so-clean handwriting.
I swear I had the messiest handwriting with the sheet always stained with ink spots everywhere. Weren't girls supposed to have super nice flowing handwriting?
Even Daniel had it better than me.
Oh, who was I kidding? It was not just ‘better’; His words looked like the freaking Waltograph.
That was something that I had learned about him while helping him with his assignment. I also came to know that he was actually pretty smart too. He was taking AP computer science and he intended to make a career in it.
Who knew that the school's most popular jock wanted to be the next Zuckerberg?
"Hmm...okay I think I got it," Daniel stated and went on to solve the next problem on the assignment.
We were sitting at one of tables which were placed outside of a little café called 'Beans & Cakes'. It was situated on the outskirts of the town and thus had a quite surrounding. Soft mellow music always flowed through the speakers on the wall which made the café a perfect spot to relax. I was roaming aimlessly around the town one day when I had stumbled across it and had instantly fallen in love with the place. It was nice to just sit and enjoy the smell of fresh coffee beans that wafted out from the café.
I reached out towards the metal basket kept on the table taking another muffin from it. Removing the paper liner from it I took a bite enjoying the sweet taste.
Daniel was still very much immersed in the physics problem. I didn't know why he had even asked for my help seeing that he had hardly came across any problem in the past hour and a half.
During this time, neither one of us spoke much. I had kept my promise to Daniel of not bringing up the topic of the bridge by never even mentioning it once. However, that didn't mean that I was ready to forget about it. I just didn't know how to approach him regarding that any other way so I had decided to simply go with the flow of events and try to know him better while hoping that he would open up to me someday. Besides, asking him directly had not really proved to be of much help, and since no one wants to deal with an 'Angry Daniel' so this was my only option.
Daniel seemed calm today, almost happy actually. His dark blue eyes looked lit up and his persona seemed more relaxed, nothing like the irritable person that I thought he was.
"Is it correct?" he asked placing the notebook in front of me and pulling me out of my trance.
"Yeah, it's right." I took one of the remaining muffins and held it at him smiling, goofily. "Here you go. It's a reward for all the hard work. Enjoy."
"I thought I wasn't even going to get one with your speed of stuffing them down," Daniel said taking a bite.
I looked at the muffin basket and realized that I had already eaten four out of the batch of six muffins that we had ordered.
Oh, well.
"What? I was hungry, okay? And by the way you should never point out to a lady about her eating habit. It's considered disrespect, Mr. Cohen!" I rebuked him faking a British accent.
Okay, maybe I was over doing things a little bit in showing that I didn't feel uncomfortable around him but since he didn't call me out on it so I decided to just go with it.
"And all the ladies in the world just killled themselves after hearing that," he retorted back to tease me further.
"Are we done insulting me yet so that we can move on to the next question?"
"Can't we do it later? I need a break." He closed the notebook and placed his arm horizontally on the table resting his forehead on it.
"Fine..but just 10 minutes. We need to finish it today at any cost," I said grabbing the last muffin.
"Yes master...as you please," he said groggily without looking up.
With his head still down, he reached towards the muffin basket only to find it empty. He raised his head and saw me dust the crumbs off my face and gave me a disapproving look. In return, I gave him a sheepish smile. "Well they were really tiny and at least you did get one."
Instead of saying anything, Daniel shook his head at me and re-positioned it back on his arm.
My phone vibrated in my pocket and the screen read that it was from Sebastian.
*Will be there in 20 minutes.*
How rude! No emoticon..
I texted him an 'okay' and then put the phone in my bag.
I didn't have my car today as Sebastian had driven me to school so I had asked him to pick me from the café.
"Okay, break is over. Let’s get back to it." I clapped my hands twice to make Daniel lift his head up.
With a groan he opened the notebook again; his eyes still shut.
After around 15 minutes, we were done with all the tough numerical given in the assignment.
"It will hardly take you around half an hour to do the rest," I told him gathered all the books and notebooks that were scattered on the table. Piling them up in a neat stack I handed them over to Daniel.
"Hmm....so we are supposed to meet at Shay's place tomorrow morning, right?" he asked placing the pile in his bag.
I nodded my head at him and sipped the last of my coffee which had gone really cold by then and made me cringe at the odd taste.
Daniel pulled out a wallet from the back pocket of his jeans taking out a ten dollar bill from it to pay for the coffee and muffin.
"Wait, I'll pay for it. I was the one who ate most of it so I should pay," I told him while reaching for my own wallet kept in my bag.
"No, don't worry about it. Its for helping me with the assignment," he said placing the cash in the small box which was kept on every table for payment.
"You were doing the assignment yourself. I just kept scarfing down the muffins," I reasoned with him.
"Norah, I've got this," he asserted firmly.
One thing I had noticed was that we were both very rigid people, not ready to bend or step back easily for anything or anyone.
"How about splitting it in half?" I offered the boy standing in front of me.
"You just can't simply agree with me ever without arguing, can you?" he said in a disapproving tone.
"Nope," I replied standing up from the black painted iron chair. "So you better agree with me or else you'll be stuck here all night arguing with me."
Huffing lightly, he took the money that I had been holding up in my hand and stood up from his seat.
"Do you need a ride to your house? 'Cause I don't see your car anywhere."
As if answering Daniel, Sebastian's car pulled up in front of us at exactly the same moment.
"No, it’s fine. Seb is here to pick me up. But thanks anyways," I told him after signalling Sebastian to hold on for a second.
Daniel replied with a nod of the head accompanied by a small smile.
After exchanging goodbyes with Daniel, I walked towards the familiar grey Range Rover. My body instantly relaxing as I got inside of the warm car.
"Hey, so how did it go with Mr. Hothead?" Sebastian asked in a teasing tone.
"It went fine. And he's not that bad," I defended Daniel.
"I still don't get why you've been talking to him so much lately. I saw you with him at school too. Please don't tell me that you have a crush on him or something," he inquired while keeping his eyes on the road.
"If I talk to someone then that doesn't mean that I like them romantically. It's just a little school work, nothing else," I replied fixing my hair in his car's mirror.
"Good...he already has a line of girls falling at his feet only to get their hearts broken in the end. I don't want that for you." He smiled at me and ran his right hand over my head.
"Don't worry, it's not going to happen. And besides I already have a boyfriend, remember?" I assured him and then asked, "Speaking of your annoyance with Daniel, what’s up between you two anyway? It looks like you both are shooting invisible daggers at each other from your eyes."
"As if I know. He has always been a bit closed off but we used to be actually civilized towards each other. However, from the last couple of years he has gone really bitter against me and is ready to like slit my throat at every moment. Like for example on last Friday he was in a worse mood that he usually is in, and out of nowhere picked a fight with me," Sebastian explained.
I thought about the new information that Seb had just given me that Daniel was in a bad mood on Friday, which was also the night of the party.
So I was right then. It wasn't just the booze as Daniel had claimed. There was definitely something else wrong.
After a few minutes, we reached the driveway of my house. I got out of the car and walked towards the main door of my house, unlocking it with the keys. Switching on the lights of the living room, I hurried towards the refrigerator in the kitchen to find something to find something to eat.
Yes, I still had a large empty space in my stomach even after eating 5 muffins.
I pulled out a large bottle of Pepsi and the container which had some of the leftover lasagna noodles that Sebastian's mom had sent for me the previous day.
I placed the container in the microwave oven to heat it and pulled out some plates from the utensils drawer to serve the noodles in.
Sebastian entered the kitchen with a box of medium size pizza in his hand.
"I picked it up before coming to the cafe," he said placing the box on the kitchen counter.
"No no don't put it here. Take it with you to my room and here..take these with you." I handed him the bottle and the plates.
"Alright...but don't whine if there is a slice or two missing by the time you come," Sebastian said and walked up the staircase while struggling to balance the weight in his hands.
"And then don't whine if you find a tooth or two missing after that," I yelled after him and heard him chuckle.
I took out the warm container of Lasagna noodles after it was heated and then took it to my room.
Sebastian was lying on the bed with his shoes still on, his eyes stuck on the plasma television and his hands tucked under his head.
"No shoes on the bed!" I reprimanded him.
"Okay, geez! I sometimes forget how much of a Monica Geller you are." He held his hand in the air and went on to removing his shoes and placing them in the corner.
"Its called basic healthy habits. You should learn some," I scolded him in a light manner. "So what are we watching?"
I placed the noodles on the table and settled on the couch.
"How about Die Hard 5?" he asked taking a bite of the pizza and chewing it.
"I hate that movie. Lets watch Tangled," I suggested taking a slice of pizza.
"We saw it the last time. Now, it's my turn and I choose 'Die Hard 5'. End of discussion," he bickered, and searched for the movie he had suggested.
I stuck my tongue out at him. "Why can't you be like other normal gay best friends who like to watch 'Tangled'?"
"Alright enough. Now focus on the movie because 'its a good day to die hard'," Sebastian said in a dramatic way accentuated every syllable and plopped down on the couch with me.
After an hour into the movie, we had already finished the lasagna noodles and both of us reached for the last slice of pizza at the exact same moment. Our gaze met as if challenging each other to a duel for the remaining slice.
What was up with me and food today? First Daniel and now Sebastian.
But I was enjoying this way too much to back down.
Before he could do anything, I pushed Sebastian back and picked up the tiny triangular shaped piece of heaven. Knowing that Seb would snatch it away from him, I licked it all over and then dangled it in font of him to tease him.
But both to my horror and disgust, he took the slice and stuffed it inside of his mouth happily.
"That is so disgusting!" I made a face at him showing my disgust and pushed him away.
"What? We've already kissed a thousand of time. How is it any different?" he laughed and tackled me down on the couch for a hug.
"It is!" I freed myself from his grip and walked towards the bathroom telling Sebastian to take dishes to the kitchen.
"Alright, I'll just pause the movie," he said picking up all the stuff from the table.
After brushing my teeth and changing into more comfortable clothes, I got inside the warm comforter on my bed along with Sebastian who was texting on his phone. He had decided to spend the night at my house. That is something that he did a lot but I never objected. I enjoyed his company so I was far from complaining about it.
I switched off the light, the T.V now the only source of any luminescence in the room.
Soon I found my eyes drooping and myself slipping into a deep slumber with my thoughts wandering off at various places, one of which was about Daniel.
Hmm….I have been thinking about him a lot lately.
And then just before entering the state of dreaming, I wished my sister good night.
Good night, Emma.
I kept wishing for a reply but it was never granted and the reply never came...just as I had feared.
