Chapter 2
Ezra's POV
"Hera's going to be so mad," I said. Kanan didn't appear to hear me.
The ruins of the Phantom rested on the ground before us. The frontal viewport had been blasted inwards, and a gaping hole was present in the Phantom's side. The engines were exhaling a thick cloud of smoke which filled the sky.
"Hera should be able to follow the smoke right to us," Kanan said.
"Yeah, I'm not sure that's such a good thing," I replied.
"You've got a good point. The smoke could attract imperial attention as well," he agreed. I didn't tell him that I hadn't really meant it that way. Better to let him think I was only worried about the danger of the Empire.
"Is it going to be safe to hang around here?" I asked, trying to cover up my mistake.
"As long as Hera got your transmission, the rest of the crew should be here soon," Kanan said.
"Well," I began, searching my memories, "I remember Sabine answering, and I said something about TIE fighters. But I don't know if she got the message."
"She's a smart girl," Kanan told me. "She'll figure it out. For now we should wait here and let the Phantom bring the crew to us."
Inquisitor's POV
I hid my excitement at the news the stormtrooper had just delivered to me.
"Tell me again," I said. I wanted to make sure I wasn't imagining things. It seemed too good to be true.
"The rebel ship was shot down on the moon of Endor. It was badly damaged, and there were no signs of rebel reinforcements," the stormtrooper reported. A single worm of doubt made its way into my mind.
"Did you check for survivors?" I asked. The stormtrooper didn't reply, and that was answer enough for me.
"Take a squadron down there and check for survivors!" I commanded. "There's every chance that those rebels lived!"
"Right away sir," the stormtrooper said. He left the room and I shook my head at the incompetence of the stormtroopers under my command. It was no wonder that the rebels had evaded capture thus far.
Kanan's POV
I meditated as I waited for the rest of the crew to arrive. Ezra had fallen into a fitful sleep on the ground nearby, and I had decided to let him rest. He had been through a lot. I had also decided not to tell Hera about his comments on how she would take the destruction of the Phantom. He was in enough hot water as it was.
I heard a ship overhead. I opened my eyes, expecting to see the Ghost. Instead I saw several TIE fighters and at least two imperial shuttles. We were in trouble.
"Ezra, get up," I said, shaking Ezra gently. His eyes flew open and his arms flew outwards, smacking me on the side of my head. I winced and grabbed his uninjured arm. It took a moment for Ezra to come to his senses.
"The Empire found us," I told him quickly. "We've got to get going."
"What about the Ghost?" Ezra asked sleepily.
"They're on their way," I told him. I helped Ezra to his feet just as the first TIE fighters began firing. Ezra and I ran into the woods and away from danger. Unfortunately, running away from danger included running away from the Phantom and our hopes of being found.
