Chapter 5 Informed
Jalh wasn't some miss guided pup, there was a reason he had picked this hotel. He knew a military man currently staying in the location, an ambassador of sorts keeping Earth's alliances to the great Empire. He walk slowly down the hall way, reaching the door number he was looking for, 395. Jalh took a step back knocking on the door of 394.
A man came to the door cracking it open to see the seven foot tall man peering in. Jalh gave the man a small smile before kicking the door down, and covering his mouth. He was shirtless and in his lounge pants. The ex-soldier glanced around the room paying no head to the struggling man. Jalh heard his muffled cries and rolled his eyes as he looked down at him.
"Fine, have it your way." Mr. Horker said, slamming his head into the floor.
Jalh placed his ear to the wall, listening for any sort of noise or motion. He felt the wall with his hand, trying to judge the material it was made of. He banged on the wall, trying for a response.
"I'm sleeping over here, quite down." A muffled cry yelled back.
Jalh felt the wall carefully, looking for any weak point in the structure. The walls felt as if they were made from sheet rock, something he could easily tear through. He smashed through the wall, white dust flying into the air, and on his shoulders. Suddenly, the man attacked thrusting a combat knife down towards Jalh.
The seven foot tall man stopped the attack, placing his arm underneath the attacker's wrist. Jalh saw a chance, countering with a giant's blow to the stomach. The man wore fatigues like a soldier, and carried a military gear knife. He was the man Jalh was looking for. Jalh quickly dispatched the man's weapon and slammed him into the wall with another massive blow, this time from the right. The poor fellow flew into the wall, the sheet rock breaking up as Jalh pinned him there with his mass.
"I'm looking for information. I'm Jalh Horker, who is trying to kill me? Who is in charge?"
The man gaged as Jalh's arm was over his throat, ready to pop off his head, "Why would I tell you?"
"Because if not I'm going to kill your family, and make you watch." Jalh replied tossing the man onto the ground.
He followed him there, getting on his knees and punching him in the face.
"I don't get my orders from the man in charge, chain of command." The solider spat out, "You remember what that is?"
"Do I remember? I invented it, to stop stupid useless soldiers like you, from dying." Jalh replied, "Give me a name."
"Captain Sev" the struggling man replied.
"Good, now I'll just have to settle with killing you." Jalh said grabbing the man by the shirt.
Jalh dragged him to the window and tossed off the seven story building. The soldier must have had a few broken bones and some mean bruises if he didn't fight back. Jalh starred into his eyes as he fell what seemed an endless distance. He turned around walking out the locked door, brushing off the dust left on his shoulders before exiting the room. He walked slowly back to the apartment, all there was now was to wait until tomorrow.
The clock ticked in the hallway, ten O'clock. The staff had left for the night, and Jalh was ready for a good night's rest. He slipped back into the room; he was only gone for five minutes.
"Sorry about that," Jalh said, as he watched the woman and child gorge themselves on the food.
"Welcome back!" The woman said in delight.
She was clean now, the same with her boy. She was quit the sight, that any man could agree with. Jalh noticed the freckles on her face that the dirt had covered before.
"Mom, can I have some ice-cream?" The sandy haired boy asked with his puppy dog eyes.
"Caleb, eat your vegetables first." The woman replied.
The boy let out a sad cry, as he picked at his peas. Jalh scoffed, as he walked by, sitting down on chair, and taking his boots off. He looked at the boy.
"Trust me kid, it's worth it." Jalh said dishing himself some cake off to the side.
"That doesn't help." The woman scolded.
"I know." He smiled, taking a bite out of his cake.
Earth had many simple luxuries most of humankind had forgotten about. He unstrapped his knives placing the out of reach of the boy, and kept his Arc-9 loaded and by his side.
"So, Jalh, What were you up to?" The woman asked.
"Trust me, you don't want to know." Jalh said after swallowing his food.
"I'll take your word for it." She replied turning back to another piece of chicken.
"Is the food any good," Jalh incurred taking another bit of cake.
"Very good, having had something like this in years, it's delicious thank you." The woman replied.
"Good, glad to hear it wasn't a waste of my money."
"May I ask something insensitive?" She inquired.
"If you got something to say, say it," Jalh replied.
"How did you get your scar?" She replied looking at Jalh's pale eyes.
"War." Jalh replied, "Nothing more you need to know than that."
The woman kept to herself, turning her attention to her meal. Her shoulders dropped as her child ripped into the cake, with his bare hands.
"Hey! Caleb, get your hands out of there! I want more!" Jalh yelled with disappointment.
The boy turned his head to Jalh, his eyes widening like a deer in a head light, he knew he was caught. Jalh wasn't very happy, but he couldn't help but think of his own child.
"Damn it child! You didn't even finish your veggies!" He scolded, looking over the massacred cake.
"Jalh," The woman whispered, looking back at the child, "You have to go to bed now. Go on, wash your hands, its night night time."
"This is my favorite cake." Jalh said looking down at the chocolate layered cake with lining of vanilla cream.
"My sincere apologies, I'm so very sorry." She replied.
"No worries, I stole the money anyway. It's recklessness like that that is gets people killed."
"Wait, you what?" The woman whispered furiously.
"Don't worry yourself about it, they were all criminals."
"That doesn't make it right!" She whispered back.
Jalh looked at her with his careless look, no longer the bright shining person he was a moment ago with Caleb, "Woman, this is war, you don't know me, but right now all I'm trying to do is keep you alive. I'd appreciate it if you just let me do that."
"I have a name." She said offended, "It's Jessica."
"Well, Jessica, names don't matter, only what a man can do matters, how strong he is. That's what keeps people rich, and powerful, me who are strong."
The brunette woman starred at him in disbelief as she walked away frustrated. She wasn't very pleased, in so many ways he acted like a child. She couldn't help but get goosebumps when around him. He could be freaky.
Jalh looked at the roof leaning back in his chair as he closed his eyes. He thought about his past, the scar on his eye. He got in his serves, when he tried to be a hero, leaping in front of a defenseless soldier, trying to protect her from an explosive blast. A piece of scrap metal bounced off the ground and opened a straight line across his left eye. He slowly let his mind wander as he fell asleep.
It was early next morning three in the morning when Jalh woke. Jessica and Caleb had taken the queen sized bed. He slowly let his chair down, to the floor as he stood up and but his boots on. He strapped his knives to his legs, and walked over to the queen sixed bed, waking Jessica up with a shake of the shoulder.
"Time to go," Jalh said with indifference.
The brunette nodded her head as she woke her groggily child taking him into her arms, and getting him ready to travel. Jalh peaked out the door, spotting a hotel employ starring at the broken down door. Jessica walked behind Jalh her child holding her hand.
"We've got to go." Jalh said walking quickly past the broken down door.
"What happened here?" Jessica asked looking at the destructive entry.
"Keep moving." Jalh said, walking at a decent past.
Jessica and her little boy followed the mysterious man. Jalh kept moving checking out of the hotel and out the door. He took a right turn and crossed over into a bus station the bus about to leave. He walked on, saying a few words that Jessica couldn't make out, and then moved on. The bus driver waved his hand in a "come here" motion. The woman followed bringing her child along.
"The kind gentleman over there paid for your ride." The bus driver said point at Jalh.
"I'll be sure to give him my thanks," She said, giving the bus driver a big smile.
She took her seat next to Jalh as Caleb played with his mother's long hair.
"To the refuge craft," Jessica inquired.
"Where else," Jalh said raising an eyebrow looking at the woman.
"Are you ever going to tell me what happened back there?" She whispered.
"You're assuming I know." Jalh replied.
"I am, because you walked into a bar, and killed thirty or more people!" She replied.
"Then why stay with me?" Jalh replied.
"Because I have no other choice, beside you're giving me a chance." The brunette replied, her head looking at the ground.
"Then does it matter? Who's to say everything I do isn't for your gain?"
"Because you don't even have a reason to help me," She replied.
"I always have a reason; I just don't always share them."
"You're selfish, and a murdered, what is wrong with you?" Jessica said in disgust.
Jalh starred into her eyes, and looked away refusing to reply to her comment. All he had done is stretched forth his hand, in aid, and she was still upset with him. Jalh shook his head.
"Yes, I am." He finally said, "Now the real question is will you do anything about it?"
Jessica turned her head, as Caleb began poking Jalh in the chest.
"I'm bored." The sandy haired child said.
"Yeah, you want to play a game?" Jalh replied
"Oh, yah, a game," The child yelled in excitement.
"It's who can be the quietest. I bet I can win. The goal of the game is to make absolutely no sound." Jalh smiled.
Jessica looked at the man in discuss, as Caleb sat still being silent along with Jalh Horker. He was a clever man, one with an agenda, she wasn't sure to think him good or bad, but she was leaning towards the later. The bus came to a halt, the wheels slowly turning until the movement was gone. Jalh stood up tossing Caleb over his shoulder and walking towards the exit of the bus. Jessica followed as they walked into the space station. Her sandy haired sun was laughing and giggling as he poked at the seven foot tall man.
"I guess you lost the game!" Jalh said placing him on the ground, "Go to your mother."
The boy hurried back grabbing his mother's hand as she caught up to Jalh Horker. The ex-military man walked through giving the man a ticket. Jessica followed doing the same. When she glanced up, Jalh Horker was gone. She was relieved, the murderer was gone.
Jalh didn't like the look of the space ship, inside or out. It was like an old air craft, crammed and uncomfortable. The space craft had no color, it was completely white, and on the inside a black grate was placed for a floor. The man made his way towards the front of the ship, finding the pilot reading for takeoff. Jalh smiled.
"Sir, you can't be back here." The pilot commented with a second glance behind him.
"Sorry, I'm your replacement." Jalh smiled as he slammed the man into the window beside him, knocking the man out.
He dragged the man back throwing him in one of the passenger's seats after taking his clothes, and replacing them with his own. It was a tight fit, but it would have to do. He sat down in the seat as he took control of the steering system of the craft.
They weren't going to some back water planet, no, they were going to Jalh's target, Captain Sev. Jalh remembered Privet Sev, twenty years ago; he was just a boy who married a woman. Now he was a father who always told Jalh he would live forever on the planet Mica. Jalh smiled, he would find the man, and climb the ling of authority, to the source.
Jessica bordered the space craft as she placed her child on her lap. The woman had just sat down as the pilot spoke.
"We are changing coarse to planet Mica, my apologies, gentlemen and ladies." Jalh said speaking into the mic.
Jessica looked to the left and right not spotting Jalh, the voice was too familiar. They were in trouble. The doors shut as the last few passengers entered the craft. The co-pilot walked into the room was Jalh took it off. The man looked at Jalh strangely, he wasn't the assigned pilot.
"What are you doing here? Where is David?"
Jalh ignored the comment, rolling his eyes, as the man walked to his side. Jalh grabbed him by the throat slamming his head as hard as he could into the glass nearby, dropping the man to the floor.
"Who needs a co-pilot?" Jalh said to himself.
