Chapter one
Laying in my bed I hear a crash and a bang.
"That doesn't sound good." I whisper to myself.
I get out of bed to see what all the commotion is all about. I pull on my boots, as I may need to make a quick get away due to the new gang around here. The fart lords,i think that's what they call themselves but I'm not sure. I go to the back door because the banging is at the front door and I only want to see the situation from afar. As I open the door it creaks, I stop waiting to hear the shouts or footsteps that I know will be coming, nothing or no one escapes the fart lords clutches no matter what you do.
Nothing, no footsteps or anything. I feel lucky. I resume opening the door, it doesn't creek anymore. I tip toe around to the side of the house and peek around the corner. I see three guys with black masks and black business suits, all wearing the same thing. The far lords have come for us.
They all have guns trained on my father. My father had been edgy the past few days so I kinda expected something like this to happen, that's another reason why I had crept through the back door.
I hear the guy furthest from me say something but I couldn't quiet hear what. Being the adrenaline pumping girl that I am, I want to get closer. Keeping my eyes trained on the three guys was the stupidest thing I had ever done because as I put my first foot forward I stepped on a stick, snapping it in half. The guy closest to me turned his head ever so slowly until his head was turned towards me. I thought I was a goner. But instead of him telling the rest of the guys that I was there he mouthed something that looked like 'get out of here'.
What the hell, that wasn't what had happened in the stories I had heard. But who was I to complain, I was getting a free pass out of hell. His head turned back as if nothing had happened.
"Did you find anything there Max" said the person closest to my father turning to the guy that gave me the free pass. So his name is Max, he doesn't seem apart of them, I mean he doesn't look as intimidating as the rest of them.
"No I didn't find anything" said Max
"Ok if you didn't find anything then let's get back to business" he turned back to my father and said "now that you have committed to your crime lets get down to the consequence. Let's say" he leaned towards my father so he could whisper to him.
"No, no, please, I'll do anything, please don't kill my family, they didn't do anything to you, just kill me instead and leave them alone!" My father yelled at the guy. It was obvious what the guy had said, he was going to kill us all and my little brother and I didn't even know what we were being kill for. Oh great.
I heaved a sigh, I know there was no getting out of this.
"Let's get this over with" said the guy in the front. The end was coming for my father, I could tell but surly they would have a use for my father first. The guy in the front lifted his gun that was trained on my fathers chest a so it was pointing at his head.
There was a beat of silence then he fired.
From where I was I got the worst look at it, as soon as the shot was fired blood sprayed from my fathers forehead and he fell face first onto the concrete.
I spun around so I didn't have to see the scene any longer. Only to see my little 3 year old brother standing there eyes wide, mouth hanging open. What is he doing out, I guess he heard all the noise too. But he didn't need to see that. After a moment of thought I took the two steps towards my brother being carful not to step on another stick and picked him up sitting him on my hip as the shock finally gave way to grief and the first sob wracked through his chest. 'I need to get us out of here fast' I thought as I looked back at the three guys, who were now in a group discussing what to do next either come kill my brother and I now or come and kill us tomorrow from what I could hear from the conversation. I didn't have the time to find out so I just creeped around the back again with my brother sobbing on my shoulder while sitting on my hip.
When I got inside I laid my brother on the couch and locked all the windows and doors being extra quiet around the front of the house. Once that was done I knew I needed to get us out of there and fast but we couldn't leave with nothing, so I grabbed the pack of all of our camping stuff that was already packed for the camping trip we were going to go on tomorrow and dumped it next to the couch where my brother was still crying, I really wanted to join him but that wouldn't get us safe so I kept going and I promised myself I could cry later when we were miles away from the danger threatening us now. After packing the rest of the stuff I thought we would need in another pack twice the size of the one with the camping stuff, I went over to my brother who had stopped crying and was just staring off into space, I fell sorry for him but at least if we make it out of this he will be able to forget what happened.
"Come on, we have to go" I say softly to him but I don't think he hears me so, trying to lighten the mood, I pick him up off the couch and swing him over my shoulder. Then I jump up and down swinging him around. He usually laughs when I do this. Just as I'm thinking that this was a waste of energy, that he is too upset, I hear his giggles which in no time turn into his normal loud laughs. So my effort wasn't wasted after all.
I put him down so he can catch his breath and walk over to our packs. I pick up the little one with a few clothes and food to last at least a week or two and walk back over to him. I hand it to him with a soft to that I hope will reassure him that at least we will be fine and that I wouldn't let anything happen to him and I wouldn't because he is my baby bro and I couldn't live without him.
Five minutes later and we are walking through the woods in the opposite direction to our town. I want to put at least two or three miles between our town and us before we set up camp for the night.
When I think we are four miles out and my brother has been complaining for about the last ten to fifteen minutes, I let us stop. We drop our packs in a little clearing and I grab the little two man tent out of my pack and start to set it up. Once it's up and would stand thirty kilometre winds, I go back to the packs only yo see my little brother curled up with his head laying on one of our two sleeping bags (I had taken our dads out as it would be dead weight, and we wouldn't need it). That's a problem for me, I need to get him into our tent but I don't want to wake him.
I bring our packs into the tent and put them to the side, hopping that there will still be enough room for the both of us with them there. I lay out the other sleeping bag and go back to my brother who still hasn't moved a muscle since I left him. What do I do now, he's still asleep. Deciding that him being safe inside the tent and waking him up against him being cold in the morning and being unsafe, I picked him up bridle style and walked into the tent, I kneel down beside the sleeping bag and lay him inside it, snuggling the blankets around his neck. I stood back and looked at he's sleeping form for a moment, he was so cute when he was sleeping. Before walking back outside and picked up the last thing that is outside; our sleeping bag. I take it inside the tent and place it with our other stuff in the corner before slipping inside the sleeping bag with my brother. I recount the events of the last hour and think of how unfortunate we are. Oh well we can't change the past we can only focus on the future. As I listen to the soft noise of the wind blowing through the trees I drift into unconscious.
