Chapter 5

Poppy's POV

It had been a few hours since I'd last checked in on Calum. He'd had his breakfast and was sleeping off the hangover so I thought it was best if I left him alone. The room had been quiet for a while. The blonde curly haired man had walked in and out on the phone a couple of times but other than that the atmosphere remained still. I checked through the new notes the doctor's had written upon reviewing his x-ray and blood tests and they were still concerned. The break was pretty bad and may even need surgery, so they had asked a surgeon to come and review the notes to give an opinion. I hadn't quite got round to telling Calum this though, and wondered how he would react to needing to stay here even longer than he thought originally. The door opened once more as the blonde walked out, phone clutched to his ear as it had been all the times previous to that one. He caught my eye as he walked past and offered me a smile. I smiled back quickly. It sounded more alive in the room when the door had opened, so I took this opportunity to make my way over, knocking loudly on the door.

"Come in." A voice called and I opened the door, heading in quickly. The three men left in the room were all smiling. It amazed me as to how they'd kept such high spirits through this time, but I admired them for it.

"How are you?" I asked carefully, not knowing how Calum would be feeling now the drugs had started to wear off and the hangover was still there. I offered a sympathetic smile to him as he looked over to me, smiling in response.

"Okay, I guess." He shrugged. "Could have done without the hangover on top but that's my fault." He let out a small sigh but smiled.

"I wanted to talk to you about your ankle, we've had a small update on it." I said softly, hoping not to upset him as I headed down the road to give him bad news.

"No problem, is it okay if we wait for Luke? He's just on the phone at the moment..." He asked, looking at the other men for encouragement. I looked between them all.

"Sorry, I never got to know your friends names, Calum, I assume Luke is the blonde one?" I quizzed. He looked over to his friends.

"Yeah, sorry about that, that was rude of me..." he started but I interrupted him.

"Cal, you were in no mood for introductions this morning, you had an undiagnosed broken ankle." I smiled, shooing away any doubts he had about how today had panned out.

"We still could have though..." the rose gold haired man said, looking thoughtful. "I'm Michael and this is Ashton. Luke is the one who ran out a minute ago." I nodded as he said each name, making sure I took them all in like a good person. Nothing was worse than going into a room as a nurse and looking unprofessional as you forgot the people in the room's names...

"Well it's nice to meet you, again!" I laughed. "Did you want me to leave until Luke gets back? I feel like I interrupted a good moment when I came in." I pointed back at the door but Calum shook his head.

"It's fine he should be back in a minute." I checked my watch, nearly time for his obs anyway, may as well get it all done in one hit.

"Thanks. Is it okay if I just check you over again?" I asked and Calum sat up straight away, nodding a resounding yes at me. I went to work, doing his blood pressure and pulse, respirations and temperature. All seemed a little better than before which was good. "How's the pain?"

"A lot better since I haven't slammed it into anything. That drug your friend gave me was magical." He laughed which made me smile.

"You don't feel you need any now?" I quizzed but he shook his head. I went to the end of the bed to write it all down just as the door opened again and Luke came back in. "Hi Luke." I greeted to his surprise. He stopped in his tracks and stared straight at me.

"I told you guys she knew." He blurted out, which caused the others to straighten in their seats.

"We just introduced you to her cos she didn't know any of your names!" Calum said, his voice sounding pressed. His pulse began to rise as if he was stressed.

"Oh." Luke managed but the room fell silent straight afterwards.

"I just wanted to give you all an update on Calum's ankle." I changed the subject quickly, knowing I'd get nothing out of them if I started questioning what Luke had meant. Calum nervously gripped the blanket around his lap.

"Is it good news?" Ashton pressed, also seeming nervous.

"I'm afraid not. Doctors have reviewed the X-ray and believe the break may be too bad to heal just with a cast. They think you may need surgery, Calum. A surgeon will be down later today to review your notes with me and he'll make the decision then but I just wanted to let you know it could be heading that way..." I'd said it all in a regrettable tone, making eye contact with every one of them as I broke the possible bad news. There was nothing more I could do as a nurse, I just had to care for him as best I could whilst the doctors fixed his ankle.

"Seriously?" Michael asked me, almost as if he was double checking. I nodded sadly.

"I'm sorry I can't give you more information, I'll chase and see if the surgeon is coming any time soon but until then we're unsure if it'll just be a cast or if you'll need surgery." I said, my tone low. Calum hadn't said a word, nor moved a muscle since I had said it so I assumed he wasn't taking it too well.

"Well, thank you for being honest with us Poppy. We do appreciate it." Luke said as if he was ending the conversation. His body language was hinting that I needed to leave the room because they need to talk about something important so I nodded at him and smiled.

"Let me leave you to discuss it. I'll chase the doctor and be back soon. Lunch should be within the next half hour." I said as I headed for the door quickly, leaving them to talk. The minute I closed the door, I heard Calum scream angrily.

"Fuck!"
