Chapter 4
Calum's POV
I was happy, yet sad, calm yet full of anger. I didn't know how to control my feelings. That damned nurse had left me all night like I was a cockroach, thinking there was nothing wrong with me when there was. She didn't even give me the time of day, let alone pain killers or water. The complaint I was going to get the solicitors involved in was going to ruin her. You can't call yourself a nurse if you don't care. Yes, I may have been angry but with good reason. She put it all down to drink whereas Poppy actually listened. Since she came on shift, it's been different. She's nice, introduced herself to everyone, explained everything to us at all times, was honest, caring and found out what the problem was after about five minutes. She's what a nurse should be.
"She must know." Luke shook his head as he took a bite into his wrap he'd bought from the shop in the hospital.
"I'm calling it, she doesn't. She's just nice." Ashton argued with him as he dug around in his bag of crisps.
"I'll ask when she comes in." Michael giggled childishly as he stuffed a bit of sandwich into his mouth too. The hangover was definitely coming, I felt awful. I groaned as I rolled to one side, clutching my side.
"Cal?" Luke asked carefully.
"Do we need to get Poppy back?" Ashton said, worry filling his voice.
"I feel like shit." I mumbled quietly. "Where's my hangover breakfast?" I could hear a pin drop as I waited for an answer, I could sense the boys were all looking at each other wondering who was going to break the news.
"You missed it when you had Iliana. They said lunch would be a few hours." Michael answered quietly.
"What?!" I shouted at them. "Are you fucking kidding?" Without thinking, I slammed my feet into the bottom of the bed in frustration, pain once again radiating up my leg. I let out a cry as I writhed around in pain, clutching at my leg. "Get Poppy!" I said as I grabbed the side of the bed, my knuckles turning white as I tried to get past the pain. Luke shot out of the room and seconds later came back with Poppy and another staff member.
"Calum?" Instantly she was beside me, her relaxed voice soothing me as she tried to calm me down. "What happened?"
"He kicked the bed." Ashton said quickly. I contorted myself, twisting and turning in the hope I could relieve the pain but it wasn't budging, I'd really screwed it up now.
"Calum, listen to me." Her voice was like a song to me as she grabbed my hand in hers and made me look up at her. "I've brought a doctor in with me, Dr Sheik, who is going to give you an injection to take the pain away. Once he's done that, he's prescribing more pain medication I can give you later." I nodded at her as I shut my eyes again, the pain radiating.
"Have I made it worse?" I asked through closed eyes. She rubbed her thumb over my knuckles as the doctor put a drip up and inserted a cannula in my arm, adding the medication to it. Within a minute, the pain was fading away and I began to relax again.
"Calum, I've finished administering the drugs now. They should last a few hours. Unfortunately it's a bad break and although you haven't made it worse, it is very sensitive. Try and keep still for now until it's got a cast on it. Please report any side affects to Poppy here, they include; nausea, dizziness, headaches, vomiting, numbness in your fingers and toes and shortness of breath. We just need to watch out for anything so don't be alarmed if you have any of those just let her know." He rambled on and I nodded, sweat covering me after the attack that pain had given me.
"Thank you Doctor." Luke said as Dr Sheik left the room, closing the door behind him. Poppy slowly removed her hand from mine and walked over to the chart at the end of the bed, making some notes.
"What made you mad?" Poppy asked from the edge of the bed.
"Breakfast. He missed it and he's hungover." Ashton stated matter-of-factly. I shot him a glare. Did she need to know that?
"Of course. Sorry Calum. What do you want? I'll get it ordered up." She smiled at me.
"A fry up would be nice but we're at a hospital so-" I began but she was already heading for the door.
"Fry up it is!" She gleamed as she shut the door behind her.
"Come on, she's gotta know." Luke held his hands out as if proving a point. "She knows you're famous."
"Or she's getting her patient some breakfast?" Ashton said it in a different tone.
"Maybe she fancies him?" Michael said humorously. I glared over at him and tutted. "What?" He said defensively holding his hands up in innocence. "It's about time you found someone."
"Shut up!" I shouted, throwing my pillow at Michael, who luckily ducked out of the way.
"Come on Cal, we all know that's why you were drinking..." Ashton said, the tone suddenly turning serious. "You can't numb feelings with drink, trust me."
"I don't want to have this conversation." I turned away from them reluctantly as I tried to prove a point.
"It's not like he made a good first impression though I mean he threw stuff at her and nearly kicked her." Luke said quietly to the others and they all giggled between themselves. Yeah, laugh it up guys. I know it was stupid and I'm certainly paying for it now but does it need talking about in front of me now?
"Are you not more concerned with how we're meant to carry on with the tour if I've broken my ankle?" I snapped at them. The room suddenly fell silent. I closed my eyes and breathed out slowly, trying to calm myself down once more. How did i always manage to get myself worked up like this? Honestly, it wasn't healthy. A phone began to ring and Luke stood up, pulling his from his back pocket.
"It's management. I'll only be a minute..." he said as he answered the phone, stepping out of the room as he did so. A knock at the door happened almost straight after, and Poppy walked in with a plate of fresh, greasy fried food - exactly what I'd wanted.
"Hope you feel better Calum." She said with a smirk as she headed back out of the door. I could sense two pairs of eyes on me, smirks aimed at me too. I pretended I couldn't see them as I delved into my lovely lifesaver of a breakfast.
