Science: It's Magic

This is a Modern Day AU.

Prompt #4

"Tell me again how you set fire to a swimming pool...?" You spoke into the microphone, one eyebrow cocked incredulously.

The student on the other again described how they'd been meaning to light the stove, but they missed, and their Incendio spell had shot right out the window and into the pool in their backyard.

You blinked and shook your head. "Well, I'm sorry that happened to you, but we don't talk about magic here."

The student gave you some frightened protests about how his pool was on fire and he had no idea what to do. He was fresh out of Hogwarts, for goodness sakes! He wasn't ready for a situation like that!

"Hey, you know what, I talk about science here. If I were you I'd call MACUSA. Thanks for participating in the questions hour!" You rushed before motioning for the tech guy to cut the line and start a song.

You sighed and pulled your headphones off your head, pushing away from the table in your rolly chair and gliding across the room.

"How many times do I have to explain that this is a science podcast?! Not a magic one!" You muttered to yourself.

The wooden door separating your recording studio and the tech studio swung open and in walked your boyfriend, Newt Scamander. He had a coffee in one hand and a gleam in his eye.

"Hello, love," he greeted, swooping down and kissing the top of your head.

"Mmph, coffee," you grumbled, reaching forward and snatching the coffee from Newt's hand. You grimaced and made a hacking noise as you tasted the copious amounts of soy Newt had put in his drink.

"Soy? Really?" You cocked an eyebrow playfully.

"It's my coffee!" Newt snatched the cup back from you. You grinned and swiveled in your chair.

"Hey, I heard the weirdest thing today: this kid set his swimming pool on fire," You told him.

"Really?" Newt raised his eyebrows with a smile rising on his freckled face. He settled into another cushioned swivel chair next to yours.

"Yeah, it's like you 5 years ago," you sniggered. Newt looked offended.

"At least I'm not the host of a science podcast for witches and wizards," Newt teased.

"Ugh, don't even get me started. Seriously, I think you guys will never understand the concept of the water cycle."

"That is not true," Newt pointed a finger at you accusingly. "I understand it!"

"What happens after water evaporates." You fired a question at your boyfriend, resting your elbows on the arm rests next to you and lacing your fingers together.

"It... uh, it.. it falls back down. Rainfall, a-and all that," Newt blushed and took a sip of his coffee. You could barely keep the triumphant grin off your face.

"Wrong, it floats around in clouds until there's too much water in the cloud and then it rains," you put it simply.

"Of course," Newt nodded.

You glanced at the sign above the swinging wooden door, reading "Science: It's Magic" and smiled to yourself. You were born a squib, and although there were times you were disappointed that you couldn't do magic you found solace in no-maj science, politics, and math. You pleased your parents not with spells, but with perfect report cards and aspirations for college. Eventually, though, as you became more involved with both magic and non-magic society, you realized that magical folks' ignorance to the world around them would cause problems in the future. So you created a podcast dedicated to educating the magical world about all the things you were passionate about, and in turn you hoped that you'd help bridge the gap between no-majs, witches, and wizards.

You'd met Newt while you were researching subjects to talk about for your show. You read his book and countless of his other papers, and soon you'd invited him to speak on your show. The minute he had walked through the door you were infatuated, and as you'd learnt on your first date, so was he.

"(Y/N)? (Y/N)? Are you alright?" Newt waved a hand in front of your face.

"Oh, yep! I'm fine, just remembering when I was young and full of hope," you stared at the wall, putting your hand on your heart dramatically.

"You dork," Newt put his coffee down and stood up from his chair. Leaning down, he scooped his arms around you and lifted you out of the chair into a loving embrace. Surprised, a little squeaking noise escaped your throat, making Newt laugh.

"Sorry, did I crush you?" He pulled away from you and smoothed down your hair lovingly. You laughed and wrapped your arms around Newt's neck.

"No, you just surprised me," you smiled sweetly. You moved your head forward so your nose was just barely touching his.

"I love you," he whispered.

"I know," you beamed. "I love you too,"

Newt moved his chin down and gently pressed his lips against yours. Chills raced along your spine and the hairs on your arm stood on end. You went on your tip toes, being almost too short to rise to Newt's tall height. You smiled through the kiss, a giggle escaping your throat despite of yourself.

"You can't keep a straight face for one second!" Newt chuckled, breaking away. You buried your face in his shoulder, your body racked with laughter.

"Aw, you're cute," you pecked his cheek, finally regaining your breath.

"Thank you," he grumbled, pulling you closer to him by your waist. "Now, I think you'd better get prepared. Your next podcast is in 4 minutes."
