Chapter 7- Chloe
I suck in a breath. Smoke wafts towards me, and I hold back a cough.
I peer towards the fire-starter. Imbecile. She's going to draw in the Careers immediately. They'll have been hunting for hours, and the smoke will be a dead giveaway. I have to leave.
I remind myself to be silent as an avox. No noise, unless I desire a sudden, painful death at the hands of the Careers. Like what the person below me will get.
The person shifts, and I catch sight of red hair, illuminated by the fire. I try to guess who it is as I slide my bag on my shoulder. The girls from 8 and 9 both had red hair, but Jessica from 9 is dead. It must be Chloe.
I try to remember her from training. She seemed to disappear most of the time, but I have a memory of her ripping apart a dummy with vigor. The Gamemakers had uploaded statistics during the training, probably to help gamblers. People always betted on the Games. Her odds of winning were higher than Glimmer's.
I crawl out from my hiding space and tip-toe away from Chloe. If she has a knife, she could be a serious threat. I've just got my dagger. It's safer to let the Careers take care of her.
"Please don't kill me!" Chloe cries. Laughter ensues, and then a scream.
I've let this happen. I've let them hurt her, and she's younger than me. But I had to. They would have killed us both had I tried to intervene.
The Careers leave, chattering amongst themselves. I catch some of it, but nothing of notice. Just mocking Chloe.
No cannon. She isn't dead.
And the Careers don't seem to have realized that yet.
