Something You Should Know

Stevie continues to lay on the ground. She closes her eyes as she focuses on her breathing. A sudden calmness spreads throughout her body.

"Mom...everything is going to be okay." Stevie heard Dylan's voice. It was calm and soothing. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you or my baby sister. Just concentrate and slow down your breathing. You can do it, mom."

After a few seconds, Stevie's breathing became even and steady. The pain in her abdomen dulled.

Before she knew it, Stevie was being lifted onto a stretcher. Stevie could now hear Christine's voice.

"She's four and half months pregnant. She's having some pain in her abdomen." Christine told the paramedics.

As the were about to take Stevie outside, Christine said. "I'm going with her." The paramedics nodded and began to wheel Stevie outside.

Christine turned towards Sara and said. "It's going to be okay, love. Just sit tight and I'll call you with an update. Girls..." she said and looked over at her daughters. "When we leave, please help out and clean up the mess the boys made."
"Okay, Mom." Emma and Amy said in unison.

Christine gave the girls a warm smile then she turned towards Lindsey and Tom and gave them an intense glare. "You two idiots, get yourselves over to the hospital and get cleaned up. You both may need stitches." She sighed then continued. "I don't know why the two of you were fighting but, if anything happens to Stevie or the baby, you will have me to deal with."

Christine turned angrily and walked towards the front door. She grabbed her purse then ran out towards the ambulance.

She stepped inside and grabbed Stevie's hand. Stevie squeezed Christine's hand then closed her eyes.

Christine bowed her head and sent up a silent prayer that Stevie and the baby would be just fine.

When they reached the hospital, they immediately take Stevie to a private room.

Dr. Edwards was paged and was soon attending to Stevie.

"Stephanie, what happened? Are still in any pain?" Dr. Edwards asked as she set up the ultrasound machine.

Christine was with Stevie the entire time. She held Stevie's hand throughout the exam.

"I fell." Stevie replied, as she closed her eyes. "And no. I don't feel any pain. Not anymore." She was already thinking of the worse.

Dr. Edwards then proceeded to perform an ultrasound. She lifted Stevie's blouse then squeezed some gel onto her belly.

Dr. Edwards took the transducer and began to move it across Stevie's abdomen.

After a few tense seconds, Stevie opened her eyes and tears rolled down her cheeks. She felt relief when she heard the baby's heartbeat. She then saw her baby on the screen.

"You're baby is okay, Stephanie." Dr. Edwards said with a warm smile. "Her heartbeat is strong."

Stevie cried tears of joy and relaxed.

After a few more minutes of being examined, Dr. Edwards gave Stevie a hospital gown and said. "I'm going to admit you overnight just to keep an on the two of you just to be on the safe side. You're blood pressure was a bit high, so, I definitely want to bring that down. If everything goes well, I'll release you tomorrow morning."

Stevie nodded.

"In a few minutes, a nurse will be by to place a fetal monitor on you so we can monitor the baby." Dr. Edwards went on. "I'll come back in an hour for an update."

Dr. Edwards then let Stevie change and attend to other patients.

Christine helped Stevie change into the hospital and helped into the bed.

Stevie for under the covers and put her hands on her belly. "Lindsey knows that I'm pregnant, doesn't he?" She asked with her head down.
Christine nodded and replied. "Yes. He heard me tell the paramedics about your condition. I'm sorry, Stevie."

Stevie shook her head no and said. "It's alright. You were just telling the paramedics what was going on so they could help me."

She stopped and with one hand, she brushed her hand over her belly as the baby began to move around again. She smiled then sighed.

"I just don't understand what happened. Why were they fighting? When I stepped out of the living room to use the bathroom, Lindsey and Tom were talking about music. I thought things were fine." She said sadly.

Christine sat on a chair that was right next to Stevie's bed. "I don't understand either. But you know I will find out." She said annoyed at Lindsey and Tom.

Stevie sighed and was quiet for a minute then she said. "I guess it's time to tell Lindsey about the baby. I mean...that he's the father.
"I think it's best if you do, Stevie." Christine said. "I haven't said anything before because I respected your decision not to tell Lindsey but now, I can't stay silent any longer. I believe Lindsey deserves to know the truth."
"You're right." Stevie said as she laid her head on the pillow and stared at the ceiling. "He does deserve to know."

John drove Lindsey over to the hospital to check if his wounds weren't anything serious.

As he drove, John asked. "Why were you and Tom fighting?"

Lindsey stared out the window and didn't know how to answer. He couldn't possibly tell John that he and Tom were fighting over Stevie.

Lindsey sighed and turned towards John. "It was nothing. It was stupid."
"I know you and I know you wouldn't fight anyone unless it was over something important. So, I know you and Tom weren't fighting over nothing." John said, not believing Lindsey. "But fine. I'll drop it for now."

John knew Lindsey wasn't going to tell him the truth right now, so, he let the subject go.

Lindsey looked out the window and thought about Stevie. She was pregnant but who was the father. Was it Tom or was he the baby's father?

Tom drove himself to the hospital and thought of Stevie the whole way. He prayed that she and the baby were okay. He knew if anything were to happen to the baby that Stevie wouldn't be able to survive it.

Once he arrived, he went into the emergency room. He told a doctor that he got into a fight at a bar.

The doctor asked if he wanted to call the police to press charges but Tom declined.

After an examination, the doctor gave Tom a few stitches on a cut just above his right eyebrow.

All his other injury's were bruises and another cut that wasn't too deep. Tom was soon free to go.

When Lindsey arrived, it was the same thing as Tom. He had mostly bruises and he had to get stitches on his cut lip.

After Lindsey finished up, he went in search for any answers about Stevie.

He wasn't getting any answers from the nurses since he was the ex husband. He was relieved when he saw Christine in the hallway. John was following close behind him.

She was coming back from getting a cup of coffee. Christine stopped walking when she saw Lindsey walking towards her.

"Chris, is Stevie okay?" Lindsey asked worriedly.
"Yes, she's okay." Christine said, a little guarded. "Her doctor wants to keep an eye on her, so Stevie will have to stay overnight."
"How about the baby?" Lindsey asked.
"The baby is just fine as well." Christine said.

"Christine...can I see Stevie? Please." Lindsey said with urgency.

Christine nodded and said. "I'll go in and ask her if she wants to see you. If she does then you can go in."
"Thank you, Chris." Lindsey said.

Christine walked into Stevie's room and said. "Stevie, Lindsey wants to see you. Should I let him in or tell him bugger off?"

Stevie had been trying to relax and was listening intently to the gentle but strong sound of her baby's heartbeat. A fetal monitor was in place around her belly.

Stevie sat up a bit and replied. "Send him in. I need to get this over with."
"Alright, love." Christine said with an encouraging smile. "I'll send him in and I'll be waiting in the waiting room down the hall with John. Good luck."
"Thank you." Stevie said.

Stevie took a deep breath and braces herself. She needed to tell Lindsey the truth. It was now or never.

Lindsey walked into the room and walked right up to Stevie. He heard the baby's heartbeat and stared at Stevie's abdomen.

He then looked up at Stevie and said. "Stevie, I'm so sorry I made you fall. I didn't mean to."
"It's okay. I know you didn't." Stevie replied as she looked down.

"So...it's true. You're pregnant." Lindsey said once again looking at her bump.
Stevie looked up then she nodded and said. "I am."
"Wow...I didn't know you and Tom were together." Lindsey said not wanting to seem jealous. "Congratulations to the both of you."
"Linds...Tom and I are not together." Stevie sighed then continued. "I mean, at least not now. Anyway, Lindsey. There's something you should know."

"What is it?" Lindsey asked in anticipation.
Stevie put her hands on her belly and said. "You're the father, Lindsey. This baby is yours."
