Renuki muffled a yawn while Mr Jasitha went on and on about photosynthesis. Trying not to doze off during the lesson she began humming to herself and without realizing it she managed to zone out of it.
'Renuki Gunasekara!'
Renuki shook her head and stood up to face the teacher.
'Sorry sir.'
'That is not the answer to the question I asked.'
Renuki's cheeks were tainted a slight pink which was barely noticeable because of her brown skin but the entire class laughed anyway.
'Next time pay attention.'
Renuki nodded before sitting down.
Kevan tapped her on her shoulder. Not knowing who it was she turned around only to see the smirking Kevan.
'What?' she snapped.
'Light travels faster than sound.'
'What?' she asked confused.
'Light travels faster than sound that is why some people appear bright until they speak.' He winked at her before leaning back on his chair, putting his hands behind his head.
Renuki couldn't believe what he was insinuating at her.
'How dare you?' she sputtered.
'No one dared me. I just spoke the truth.' And he gave her one of his, very annoying according to her, smirks before suddenly scrambling about his desk and opening his textbook.
Unsure about his sudden change in his reaction she turned forward to see her biology teacher glaring at her. Grinning sheepishly, she mumbled another apology before burying herself in the textbook. Kevan had to bite his lip to prevent himself from laughing out loud. But once sir went back to teaching he put his head down and laughed as quietly as possible. God, he loved the expression on her face when he said that line.

'Ryan, I told you so many times that you shouldn't put your muddy rugby shoes on the carpet!' was the first thing Kevan heard as he entered home.
'Amma really?' Kevan asked as he removed his shoes.
'Come on Kevan how many times should I tell him this. I can't keep washing this carpet, am not a slave.' Mrs.Seneviratne said as she picked up Ryan's shoes by its laces and kept it outside.
Kevan shook his head and went to the kitchen to see if there was anything to eat. He was about to open the fridge but before he could his mother stopped him.
'You are the other one! How many times have I told you to wash your filthy hands before eating!' Kevan's mother pulled Kevan's ear as he screamed.
'Ow! Ow! Ow! I am sorry amma!' Kevan pleaded.
Amalie let go of her son's ear and harrumphed.
'You better follow my rules next time.' she said sternly before going to set up lunch.
'Gosh.' Kevan grumbled under his breath before going up to his room.
Once freshened up before going down for lunch he decided to do something very silly.
Research on Renuki Gunasekara.
All he knew about her was that she was quite well known in school because she was the daughter of one of the richest men in Sri Lanka and that she used to be an ace in physics when they were younger. He would never forget the days where he would come home frustrated that a pretty girl could beat him at a subject like physics. But all that was in the past now, for some strange reason, probably her new obsession with clothes and makeup, she got lower grades than him in physics now.
He decided that the best way to do research on her was to go through her social media. Unfortunately for him all her accounts were privatised. Meaning he had to send her requests. He wondered if she would accept him if she knew that he was the one who spilt ferric on her. He highly doubts it but he sent a request anyway. Hoping that she would accept it he made his way downstairs for lunch.
'So, what's new at school?' the boys' mother asked them.
Ryan and Kevan stopped wolfing the food down their throats, looked at each other then at their mother before shrugging and going back to eat.
'Boys!'
The two brothers jumped at their mother's remark before looking at her startled.
'I know you both are growing boys but at least say something to me.'
'I have nothing interesting to say because my friend is angry with me.' Ryan grumbled.
'And why are they angry with you?' the mother asked the eleven-year-old.
'You probably stole something of theirs or bit them or something.' Kevan said as he tore the chicken off the bone.
'I did not okay! Dilaisha was angry with me because I didn't give her my new maped colour pencils. Thaththa bought it only for me so I said I can't give it to her ad so she became angry with me.' His voice becoming mellower as he narrated his story.
Kevan laughed at that.
'But Ryan aren't you supposed to share?' Amalie asked.
'I can't share! Thaththa bought it only for me!'
'Oh God.' she muttered under her breath.
Kevan couldn't stop laughing. His mother thwacked him upside the head.
'Kevan! Don't be mean!'
Kevan made a face at Ryan before muttering an apology. Ryan made a face in reply.
'Okay Ryan from now onwards you should know that sharing is caring okay.'
Ryan nodded his head like a good boy but Kevan knew that this boy was not going to share his colours with anyone.
'So, what's up with you?' the mother asked her older son.
He considered not telling her anything but then he thought what was the harm in telling her anyway.
'Uh.... There is this girl in school...' Kevan couldn't complete his sentence because Ryan began to laugh.
'Shut up Ryan.'
'Kevan.' His mother warned him. He had forgotten that they are not allowed to say shut up to each other.
'Okay amma. Ryan would you please keep your mouth closed.'
Ryan may have stopped laughing but there was a small smirk on his face. Kevan felt like punching him but that would only get him a week of no phone and so he controlled his urge and continued to tell his mother about Renuki and his new way of annoying her. At the end of the conversation his mother spoke.
'You're not going to let a mere girl distract you from your studies, right?'
Kevan sighed. He should have seen it coming.
'Obviously not amma.'
'Okay as long as it doesn't distract you then its fine.'
Kevan nodded.
'But I think its best if you don't tell your thaththa about this girl.'
'Obviously I won't.'
After finishing his lunch, he went to the living room and laid back on his couch. Opening the hidden apps, he checked all his social media and to his surprise Renuki had accepted his requests. Maybe she didn't know that it was him but then why would she accept him anyways. Or maybe she knew that it was him but just accepted him. Whatever the reason he now had access to her accounts.
And as he scrolled through her feed he realized that it was one of the most boring things he had ever done in his life. Most of her pictures were just selfies and clothes. Nothing adventurous, maybe she feared bugs, and nothing daring, she was scared of ruining her makeup probably. It was a complete waste of money according to him. She could have travelled the world and back, gone to explore the most exotic places and witness marvellous events but no she apparently had fun buying all kinds of clothes. He couldn't delve deeper than he had because at that moment Ryan, who had been sneakily seeing the phone from behind Kevan's head, yelled at his mother.
'Amma! Kevan has a girlfriend.'
Mrs.Seneviratne came running into the room.
'Kevan you told me - '
'Yes, Amma what I told you is true.' Kevan tried to tell his mother while slowly going to the home screen on his phone.
'Ryan was just lying Amma.'
'No, I wasn't. Show Amma your phone.'
Kevan smirked and showed his mother the chemistry reactions app that he was on. She put her hands on her hips and scolded Ryan for telling lies.
'But Amma - '
'Quit your whining and go do your homework.'
Kevan stuck his tongue out at him before resuming his earlier position on the sofa and this time he went through the chemistry equations.

'Dude can I have the physics homework that miss gave?' Danush asked Kevan, panting as he did so.
He bent down trying to catch his breath while Kevan looked at him, amused.
'As usual you don't do your homework. What happened to your resolutions of the new academic year.'
'Ah let them go fly kites. Now give me the physics work.'
Kevan shook his head as he gave his friend his book.
'You will never learn will you.'
'Nah.' Danush grinned before hurriedly copying down the answers.
A few minutes later Renuki walked in with the teacher behind her.
Renuki took a seat that was in-between Avantika and Kevan. Avantika gave her a cold smile before facing forward and Kevan tipped his imaginary hat at her, smirking. Renuki banged her head slightly on the desk wondering why this was the only empty seat in class. Kevan looked at her in amusement. Renuki sensing someone's eyes on her turned sideways to see Kevan. He waved at her. She glared at him. Kevan gave smiled sweetly before turning his attention to the teacher. But he could listen to the lesson half-heartedly as he was too busy trying to think of something to say to Renuki today.
'Kevan.' Miss Bhagya called out his name.
Kevan stood up.
'Yes miss.'
'What is simple harmonic motion?'
'when a is equal to negative omega squared into x.'
'I asked for the definition Kevan.'
'It is the definition miss.'
Miss Bhagya sighed and asked for the proper definition.
'Why didn't you say so miss,' Kevan gave the teacher a childish smile before answering her question.
'Very good.'
Danush applauded him and the rest of the class, except Renuki Kevan noted, followed suite. Kevan bowed and sat down.
'Okay class. Be quiet.' And once the noise had subsided she continued, 'Now do questions five to eleven. I will call you one by one to answer it on the board in fifteen minutes.'
After a few groans, the class got to work but Kevan still thought about science puns and Renuki wondered on how to fix her friendship with Avantika.
