Ammon's Pov
I sat on the deserted banks of the Nile looking ahead into the shimmering water as I threw tiny pebbles and watched them skid across the surface leaving small ripples in its awake. Dressed in a worn out cotton top and equally worn out bottom with a ragged cloak I looked more like a peasant than a General. I took in the warm evening breeze and my thoughts started to drift.
I wondered if Neith had found the note I left behind. I knew she would be the one to find it as she would have been searching for me. I wanted to address a note to her as I did for Anka but it was just too painful to write. What would I say? That I was a coward who did nothing but obey the orders I was given. That her big brother who she looked up to was a spy. That he was responsible for father's death. I just couldn't bring myself to write such a letter. I know it was too much to hope for but I sincerely wished she would forgive me someday for my actions when she found out.
A faint sound of footsteps, making a light crunching sound beneath the sand made me turn around. A deep frown made its way to my brow.
"Weren't we supposed to meet after sundown?" I asked looking at the murderer who had stabbed my father right through his heart with no effort and felt no guilt for doing so. The man my father had trusted dearly, the man I once looked up to but now despised from the very bottom of my heart, Jabari.
"All of them have managed to make it a bit early given the situation. They asked me to fetch you." Jabari said, his voice low.
I looked at him, my eyes filled with hatred but that didn't seem to bother him one bit. I stood up and dusted my pants while he went his way. We would both make our way to the hideout but not together to avoid suspicion. I walked to towards the market while he took a route down the nearest ally.
I knew I was in trouble. I was supposed to have killed Aahotep by now. Hopefully they'll buy the excuse I give one last time.
As I was making my way through the market my eyes fell on a charm bracelet. All kinds of animal figures where combined into a leather strap. Anka had wanted one of these but fussed over how it was overpriced. I shook my head as I smiled fondly. She really was quite a handful at times.
I hope Anka was doing alright. I made Anka fall for me as a revenge plan to get back at Jabari. I knew he loved his daughter dearly and I wanted to use her as leverage. Little did I know that she would be the one to steal my heart or what was left of it anyway. Her warm smile could do that to any man. Even ones as broken as me. I said a small prayer to Aten hoping he will keep both Anka and Neith safe.
I went through a few alleys before I stopped at a small worn out house. I knocked on the door three times and gave it a soft kick. After a few seconds I could hear bolts unlocking and the door opened with a creak. A familiar face smiled at me.
"Ah Ammon glad you could make it," Bes said as he took my cloak.
Bes was the guy who did everything for the Nobels. From standing guard at these meeting to assassination, he did them all and he was the best at almost everything. Too bad people would never believe that this guy took down almost twenty men unarmed.
The reason why nobody would believe it was because he was, well over forty for starters. His small and weak frame made him look like he was in his early fifties. His look always made people think he was an old sick man. But if you saw the way he fought you would probably think you have gone mad rather than believe that a man like him possessed such skill.
I smiled at him," Its not like I had a choice."
I walked past him and took my seat on the cushioned mattress. The outside might look like it was haunted but that didn't stop the Nobles from dazzling up the place. It was always their comfort over anything else.
Almost all of them where here except Jabari and Ishaq. I wonder what was taking them so long. Just as if on cue door opened and I heard footsteps.
"Sorry we're late. Had a small puff on the way," Jabari said.
"And why are you late Ishaq," asked another Nobel named Chika
"I joined him," Ishaq said with a wink.
I rolled my eyes. These guys never know the value of people's time.
"Alright we shall begin," Dakari said.
Twenty five groups existed. All small sized. The members unaware of the other parties. If anyone ratted out anything to the Pharaoh or officials then instead of the entire organisation coming down only the members of that particular group would be exposed.Through a lot of sneaking around I found out the leaders of all the groups. Hopefully Aahotep could use it to wipe them out.
I had my doubt that the Aahotep's mother was also involved but I was never able to confirm it.
Today the top ten leaders had gathered to discuss their plans of bringing Egypt to its knees. Why you may ask. Its so that they can blame that Egypt's downfall was because of the new tradition and that they had to convert it back. They seeked the help of Hittites and made a deal. Hopefully I can stop whatever they will be scheming today.
"Ammon, what do you have to say to this?" Dakar asked looking at me. Oh no I totally zoned out.
"To what?" I asked hopping he would repeat whatever was said.
"To Aahotep's state. He was supposed to be dead. Why is he still alive?" Dakari asked looking a little annoyed.
"I did poison his drink. But I think he didn't drink enough of it." I lied.
"Well what are we supposed to tell Neferititi. She must already suspect that we are behind the murder attempt," Chika says looking worried.
"Why would she suspect us?" I asked acting confused. So I was right. Aahotep's mother was really involved in this too. I wonder how Aahotep would take the news.
"Chika you imbecile. Can't you ever keep your mouth shut," Dakari screamed at Chika.
"Wasn't it time he knew," Chika brushed off Dakari's glare like it was nothing.
"Not a word of this to anyone Ammon," Dakari warned.
I nodded.
"Now, it seems like its too late to kill Aahotep. If Nefertiti finds out that we were behind this than we will all be killed. That old witch seems to be reconsidering things. We need to act fast or who knows what she might do. Moving on, Haji tells us the status on Hittites. Have they executed the Kings and Queens yet?" Dakari asks looking at Haji with hope.
Reconsider? What did she what to reconsider about? Why was she involved with the rebels in the first place? So many questions seemed to flood at once. I can ponder on that later. Right now I had to focus on this meeting.
"Unfortunately no, King Omar had been locked up in a cell and the Kings have sent out letters to their kingdoms to send aid for Egypt," Haji says weakly.
"What? How could this happen? Ahh can nothing go according to plan," Dakari said as he banged his fist on the ground.
"But Dakari, it won't matter. They won't reach in time to help Egypt," Haji says softly looking scared.
"Ahh I don't care anymore. Bes make sure you kill the Kings of the neighbouring lands. Make it look like the Hittites did it. We don't need anymore heat than we already have," Dakari said.
"Sure I'll finish the job in two nights," Bes said bowing slightly.
"Good. At least I have one person who can get a job done properly," Dakari said eyeing me.
The meeting continued for another twenty minutes before they decided to conclude it.
"That's all for today. You all can go back. Next meeting in three days from now," Dakari said getting up. Everyone stood up to leave.
Well it was now or never I thought.
"I have something I want to share with everyone," I announced.
"What is it?" Dakari asked annoyed.
"I will be taking my leave from this organisation," I say and before anyone could object I remove a dagger from my shoe and slice Dakari's throat.
I moved just as fast towards Haji. By the time Bes could realise what was happening I managed to slice all ten Nobels throats. I couldn't blame the guy. I did kill them all in five seconds.
"What have you done Ammon?" Bes asked, shock written all over his face.
"Something I should have done a long time ago," I say bringing the dagger closer to me. Since weapons weren't allowed I knew he would be unarmed. It was the only way I could defeat him.
"You won't get away with this," Bes spat as he charged towards me.
I stepped sideways just in time to avoid his flying kick. For the next minute I continued to dodge his attacks. It was the only thing I could do since he was as fast as the rushing winds. I had to find an opening soon.
I was about to strike his side when he seemed to slow down a bit but was stopped midway. Damn this guy was fast. The dagger was pulled from my grasp. Using my other hand I managed to punch him right in his nose. He released me immediately and I stepped back.
Blood dripped from his nose onto the floor. Bes looked pissed. His eyes threatened to kill me instantly. I knew I was no match for him without a weapon. I eyed the small dagger which was now in his grasp. I knew what I had to do though I didn't like the thought of it. I hope my plan works. I needed it to.
"I will make sure you die a slow and painful death," Bes said. His words laced with venom.
"We'll see about that," I answered back.
He charged again and this time I didn't step aside. The dagger made its way right into my left rib. Hitting the bone. I gasped at the pain. Bes was taken aback for a second by my move and it was all I needed. I removed the dagger and with one swift move stabbed him right in the heart. He gasped as I dug the dagger deeper with what little strength I had. He fell to the ground but his eyes never left mine. Even in death they possessed the same venomous look like that of the viper. Even in death it could still kill with you with its bite.
I knelt down as I clutched my wound. Pain flooded to every part of my body. I knew the damage was too deep. I wouldn't survive this. I knew it.
I had finally done it. After all these years I was finally free from their clutches. Now it was all left to Aahotep to finish off the rest. I hope I had bought them enough time.
I collapsed onto the floor. I probably had a few more minutes before I would close my eyes forever. I turned my head and saw Jabari's motionless body. Blood seemed to still flow from his slit throat. His eyes still open. I felt happy even though it was wrong to feel so. I had finally got my revenge. I could now die in peace knowing that I had avenged my father's killer.
I closed my eyes and felt myself drift into a peaceful state. I could see my mother laughing at something my father seemed to have told her. They both looked at me smiling widely.
"Ammon, my dear boy. You're finally here. Mamma has missed you soo much. Come give me a hug," I heard her say. I was a small boy again. I smiled and ran into her open arms feeling her warmth, her scent. I was finally home.
