Natsu Dragneel brought the cigarette to his lips, the taste of tobacco danced in his mouth and he leaned back in his chair, he inhaled the intoxicating smoke. Pulled the cigarette away from his lips, he angled his head up and blew the smoke out. The warmth of the room was suffocating yet reassuring, the screaming from his mother echoed in the small house and he heard a door slam.

She was drunk.

But what was new? He closed his eyes, the aroma of the cigarette filling his room and allowing old memories to resurface. The way his dad had always stood at work late and how he returned back home after two days drunk and full of spots. At 6 years old, Natsu already knew his parents were far from being in love. Love. The word left a bitter taste in his mouth and he couldn;t help but let his mind fall back to his blonde haired friend, he always would climb through her window when his parents would fight. Yet thinking of Lucy just brought on the feelings he was trying to push away for so long.

He was afraid.

Afraid of being in love with someone he trusted.

"Love is nothing Natsu, remember that. It's nothing." His mom had pinned him to his bed and was whispering that in his ear when he was only 7 years old, it was the day his father had finally left them for good. He remembered how his tears were rolling down his cheeks and how his mother smelled of alcohol and cocaine.

Natsu shut his eyes, he didn't want to visit those memories again. He dropped the cigarette in a bowl of water on his desk and stood up. He looked at the wall in front of him, pictures of Lucy and him laughing. Her laugh was everything, he never wanted to take that away from her.

But you did.

You took everything away from her.

He looked away and saw a picture of his mom and dad, they were young. His mom's smile was bright and full of life, his dad looked so in love. He picked up the picture, both of them were in love. He remembered hearing his mother cry herself to sleep when she first found out her husband was seeing another woman. How she couldn't bear looking at Natsu.

"You remind your mother of me, don't you?" His father's laugh echoed in his head and he threw the picture across the room, the glass shattering on the tile floor. He felt the tears threatening to come out and he ran out of his room. The hallway was quiet and pictures of his family were lined up. He walked past them, refusing to look at the fake smiles, the fake love.

"Don't ever settle boy." Natsu grabbed his keys from the counter on his left, his mother's cries echoing in the house as he reached for the front door's knob. He shut his eyes tightly, the tears slowly falling on the floor.

Her lips were on his, everything had stopped. The way her hands were shaking nervously as she clutched onto his jacket. It seemed perfect.

"Women ruin everything Natsu, don't ever think she really loves you." He pushed her away softly, his heart shattered for the millionth time remembering how hurt she looked. How the people around them whispered as she ran out. He opened his eyes and swung the door open, rushing towards his car.

"I love you Natsu and that's all that matters alright." Lucy had said those words the first time a 10-year-old Natsu snuck through her window at 12 pm. His parents were arguing and when he tried asking for his mom she had turned around with a cold glare.

"Why are you still here, you're a mistake get it through your head." Lucy had comforted him, he fell asleep laying on her lap as her hands ran through his hair. She was always there for him, sneaking through her window was a routine and she was always there.

He got into his car and turned on the engine, he leaned on the steering wheel and more tears came out. He was scared of becoming like his parents. He then backed out of his driveway and drove towards a familiar street.

"You're not your parents Natsu." He remembered his favorite teacher, Igneel, has said those same words to him before he died in the hospital. That same day his mother was laughing and had a man over at the house.

"No one who loves you is going to stay idiot." She then proceeded to make out with the older man beside her. He had felt disgusted with himself, he remembered crying himself to bed. He remembered waking up to someone sitting beside him, a teary eyed Lucy who heard about Igneel. She hugged him tightly and cried with him.

He stopped in front of the cemetery, he pulled out his keys and stepped out. Passing by the many tombstones, the flowers, and lights. He stopped at a stone, Igneel engraved into it. He kneeled down and touched the stone and pulled his hand away.

"I fucked up. I fucked up so bad. I'm just like my dad-" He never got to finish his sentence because he broke down crying, his sobs echoing in the empty field. "I messed up Igneel, I don't know what to do anymore." He cried out burying his face into his hands.
