(Chapter Twenty-Four)
I have never had such a quiet dinner before. At my house, my brother and dad would be making stupid joke, my mom laughing even though she knows my father isn't as funny as he use to be, and I would going off about how stupid everyone at my school is. Here, at Hermes family, everyone was sitting around the table quiet and awkwardly eating their mother and wife pork dumplings, rice, and fish dinner. I'm pretty sure it's not like this always though, it's because they feel weird with their guest sitting next to Hermes.
I was trying to figure out how to these chopsticks in my hand though to act as if there was nothing weird but I was failing at using them as I couldn't feel Hermes brother and sister watch me, his parents would look at me every now and then. His father—gosh, Hermes is a spiting image of him. Short curly blond hair, strong face, nice golden tan, and tall. Hermes father wears glasses on his face, which doesn't take away any of him being handsome. I wish Hermes would wear his glasses, it'll be like old times maybe.
“Do you want a fork?”, Hermes asked, whispering in my ear.
“No!”, I said, maybe a little to loud and hard. I was just determine to use them and succeed, but I think as more time pass, I was just looking like an idiot. “Sorry.”, I apologized to everyone who had their eyes on me.
After trying one more time to pick the dumpling up and it just dropping, I put one of the stick down, and stabbed the other stick into the dumpling and put it in my mouth.
“Wait, Jaycee, it's hot—“, Hermes went to warn me but I just sat there and chewed on the dumpling. I could feel the steam in my mouth, but it wasn't really hot to me. I have eaten much hotter things then a little dumpling.
I grinned as I swallowed it, “Relax, I think I would know if I had to blow on my food or not.”
It went back to being quiet as I ate my dumpling with one stick and I stupidly picked up some rice with my hands when I realized how unlady like that was. In my family, eating food with our hands was pretty normal even though I can see my mom OCD and not approve, but deals with it. I don't know how Hermes family is, they probably think I'm some. . .animal.
Oh. . .
I decided not to take another bite of rice as I smiled awkwardly and turned my head right, sighing heavily. I'm an idiot.
I have never felt so uncomfortable like I did right now. I just want to be home with my crazy family right now. Hermes can come along to, I have no problem with that.
“So, uuhh, Jaycee,” Hermes dad, Troy, began awkwardly as he cleared his throat. “You're family has lived in Nash for a long time, huh?”
“Yeah, ever since my great-great grandfather Jamie moved here after the first war.”, I said.
“Oh, you're family been in the war?”, he asked. “His group must have been lucky to have it.”
I smiled a little and shrugged, “I guess so.”
“Are you really a wolf?”, Hermes little brother, Joshua, asked. He was an adorable blond nine year old who kind of reminded me of Hermes at his age. “Ma has told us about you, she says your family is cursed.”
“Joshua!”, Hermes, his father, and mom said loudly in a warning tone.
“Idiot.”, Hermes sister, Isabelle, mumbled under her breath as she ate some rice.
“What?”, he asked, shrugging his shoulders innocently. “I have only met one wolf before and she looked pretty human to me.”
“She is human and so is Jaycee.”, Hermes said to his brother. “They're both just half wolf to.”
“Ma never told me how you're family got stuck like that. Must have been serious to tick off a witch.”, he said.
“Okay!”, Hermes dad said loudly as he laughed awkwardly. “Josh, no more questions.”
“Why?”, he asked. “I think it's cool she's a werewolf. How many people can say they sat across from an actual werewolf?”
I couldn't help but feel touched a little. He was beginning to be my favorite!
“I'm surprised Hermes is dating you, I thought werewolves and witches hated each other.”, he questioned. “No one tells me anything in this family.”, he said as he rolled his eyes.
“Hermes and I have a special relationship.”, I said to him and Hermes kicked me under the the table. I glared at him with a confused look, but I turned back to his adorable little brother. Hermes shouldn't feel ashamed of being my mate where in my family, we always proudly show off our mate and show how much we love them. If Hermes family is going to be my family, they should deal with hearing how much I admire Hermes even though he's a jerk sometimes.
“How is it special? Hermes is annoying guy who liked to bring different girls home before he dated Lucinda which I never found how why they broke up.”, he said. “Truthfully, I feel bad you Jaycee.”
“Josh.”, Hermes hissed under his breath. “Shut up.”
“'Shut up'”, Josh mocked his brother.
“I'm not hungry anymore.”, Hermes mom said as she got up quickly from the chair and took her plate into the kitchen.
Hermes dad sighed heavily as he got up and went into the kitchen with his wife. Hermes and his siblings might have not been able to hear them or acted like they didn't, but I could. The kitchen wasn't very far and I could hear them clearly.
“I hate acting as if everything alright.”, Hermes mom said as low sobs came out her mouth.
“I know, Maria, but we have to. It's strange for me to, but we have to at least deal with it. Carmina told us over the phone what they said is true. We can't do anything about it know, they're together and they'll always find a way to be together. We have to accept it.”, he said.
“She has no class like a witch does, Troy.”, she hissed. “Spirits Above, if they have children, they'll be half wolves Troy. We'll be mocked and dishonored.”
I brought my hand up and pushed my hair behind my ears as I lowed her my head, frowning. This was more serious then I thought and I couldn't help but feel. . .bad? I felt like disgust about myself for being a wolf which I never felt. I always felt proud and honored to be a wolf, but now? I just wished I was normal. Hermes mother would hate me as much as she did right.
“What do you want me to do?”, Troy asked. “Kick Hermes out? Disown him? He's our son, Maria, no matter what. I know you wanted him to be with a higher generationer witch, but—but Jaycee is a higher witch.”
“She's a wolf.”, she hissed coldly. “We have hated each other for how long? Her ancestor is Juan Russo, remember? He killed our kind in Salem.”
“I know, Maria. I could tell you so many things you'll want to hear, but it's things you need to hear. Jaycee is a werewolf that can do magic just like us—better then us. We share the same spirits. No matter what, Jaycee isn't very different from us.”, he said.
It was quiet for a moment and I felt at least a little better with what Troy said. I know he doesn't very much like, but he liked me more then Hermes mom did. He understand what's going on and at least dealing with it.
“Are you alright?”, Hermes asked me and my head snapped up to look at him, realizing that I was at a dinner table and I was making my depressed self obvious.
“Yeah.”, I said.
“I just can't deal with all this right now. I wish she'll just go.”, Maria said.
I bit my bottom lip and got up, putting my jacket on.
“Jaycee?”, Hermes questioned as I walked away from the table and over to the door. He then ran in front of me and slammed the door the shut when I opened it, “Wh-where are you going?”
“Home.”, I said. “Where I belong at the moment.”, I whispered to him.
He looked really confused, “Huh?”
I put my hand on his chest and pushed him away from the door. I opened it again and walked out quickly, slamming the door shut. It opened again when I made it to the bottom of the steps and I ignored Hermes as he caught up next to me.
“You heared them, didn't you?”, he asked. “Whatever they said, I'm sorry.”
“Your mother didn't want me there at the moment. I was doing her a favor before she broke out crying.”, I said as I looked straight ahead, not at him before I ended up crying. I was hard, I wasn't going to cry in front of him.
“I wanted you there, it was going good.”, Hermes said as he followed me home.
I scuffed, “It was the most awkward dinner I have ever had, Hermes.”
“Okay, so I know my mom can be critical but she only wants the best for me.”, he said.
“If we have kids, you're family will be mocked and dishonored.”, I said as I finally looked up at him. “It's what you're mother said. I can understand why James and Eliana kept their relationship a secret from everyone. Each side is judgmental.”
“So what are you saying, huh?”, he asked. “You want to break up? Not be together?”
I scuffed again, “Of course not—I'm just going home at the moment.”, I said as I looked straight forwards again.
Hermes walked next to me then and didn't say anything which I was happy for. He then took my hand in his and tighten his hand for a second. I couldn't help but look at him in the corner of my eyes and saw him him looking straight forwards to.
I smiled and pulled myself closer next to him.
When we made it to my house, Hermes was a little hesitant to go inside but he followed behind me where I could hear my family in the dinning room laughing.
“Jaycee, is that you?”, my mom called.
“Yeah.”, I said. I held Hermes hand as we walked over to the dinning room and they got a little quiet when we came in, “Someone followed me home. Can we keep him?”, I jokingly asked.
“Oh.”, my mom said, smiling brightly then. “We thought you went running, but how more perfect.”
“Hey, Hermes.”, my dad awkwardly said as he forced a fake smile on his face. I felt better, because at least my dad was trying to be nice now.
“Hello, sir.”, Hermes said awkwardly back.
“Are you both hungry?”, my mom asked as she got up. “I have extras, Hermes, with this family you always have to make more then usual for everyone because they like seconds.”
“O-oh no, I ate at my—“, he started but cut him off.
“I'm starving.”, I said and chuckled. I looked at Hermes, “I suck at chopsticks.”
I went to the bathroom before I ate and I noticed Hermes felt awkward like I did at his family. When I came back down though, my family was laughing, and I saw a smile on Hermes face that I could see that was a real by the way his eyes shined.
hint, hint, you know where Jamie (My Muted Mate) got his name lol
