Debating on threads

First off, trolls: We're all ready to kill those people, are we not?

I know I am. The ones who pretend they're on one side of a controversial issue, and make a statement that makes that side look stupid.

Yeah. Those people.

I'm so done with them. Listen- If you want to make a point, make it! Do not go off and make the other person look stupid-that's not the goal. It shouldn't be, anyway. The goal should be to effectively prove your point, correct? Don't let your pride overrule you when you're debating on some thread. Try and be open minded.

Can this be difficult? Oh heck, yes. You've got no idea how much I struggle with this. Because it really is difficult to look at it from their point of view as well as yours. I've gotten a lot better about that, thankfully. But, for example, if someone goes out and says something like:

"Religous people are idiots. They need to get back to reality: it's all a bunch of myths."

And you completely disagree. Now, you can go and do this:

"You idiot!  (insert angry argument here)! How stupid are you? Maybe you should actually become informed on the subject! I know more than you!" And blah, blah, blah...

Which, admittedly, is something I've done before. Well, not the name calling. That's only happened a couple times, and I was so mad my face was red. No, try and say something like this:

"Why do you think they're myths?"

Ask for their reasoning behind their statement. Then?

Unleash the dogs, honey!

Keep in mind that when I say unleash the dogs, it doesn't include cussing and name calling. You look crazy unintelligent when you do something like that. You won't be taken seriously. You'll be dismissed as 'another one of those idiot ranting lunatics'. Don't do that.

Make sure you're very informed on the subject you're talking about, as well. If you can't argue your point- do not, I repeat, DO NOT comment. You just end up looking like a fool.

Also, if at first you completely understand the subject, and then the conversation evolves and you suddenly don't, DO NOT continue the conversation. In that position, the best idea is just admit that you don't know. Seriously, that's all you have to do. You leave, and if they've got an ounce of brain in them, they'll understand completely that you can't discuss something you aren't knowledgable about. I usually say something like this when that happens:

"You have a very good point, and I can respect it, even if I don't agree with it. I'd love to continue this conversation, but I honestly don't know enough about the subject. Maybe some other time we can finish it."

-When you say this, you sound so much smarter it isn't even funny. I've done this before on YouTube, and the guy was incredibly nice about it and even went so far as to thank me for my honesty and sharing my opinion.

Next on the list: Ending a debate.

This is a tough one. Because, if we're honest, we'd all debate to the end of the universe if it meant we'd win a debate on here. I hate to tell you-it doesn't happen.

What usually happens, in my case, anyway, is that we hold a very long and detailed conversation of opposing points, and then one of us decides it's enough and says-

"I can't continue this-it's been going on a long time. I'm going to have to go."

Will there be the people that immediately say:

"HAHAHA! I knew you'd give up, you have no clue what you're talking about! Lol, you're so stupid it's not even funny. Such a *bleep* idiot!" ?

Absolutely. You can't avoid them. They'll probably even post a link to the  thread in their status or something, just to gloat.

DO NOT be one of those people! Just don't.

Alright. I may post another part to this; there is a lot to cover on the subject. We'll see.

If you're reading this, I'd really appreciate if you voted! It won't kill you to click the button, I swear! :)
