One Hell of a Storm
The next few days were interesting to say the least. Despite the talk with Law, you were unnecessarily self conscious of the newly discovered brand. He never brought it up again but felt a bit more open around you in his own way. He was still grumpy and snappy at times, having no problem bickering with you every once in a while. At the same time, he started hovering around you on occasion, always careful not to touch as it still bothered you at times. But he'd stay close when talking or sharing space. As it turns out, you appreciated his attempts at normalcy and it made you relax about your mark, even if he was a bit more conscious about you than before.
While he pushed you in the right direction to be more relaxed about it, you really started to forget about it when the Polar Tang set sail. You were reminded about the underwater view and startled all the crew you ran past to get to the nearest porthole. Eventually Law found you, gazing out one in the recreational room with a look of pure happiness as fish swam by. You were perched with your knees in the cushion of a couch while leaning into the back of it with your head resting on your hands.
He joined you, spending time peering over your shoulder and telling you what each fish was or explaining random facts he knew about them or the plants the ship passed. You enjoyed every second of it, loving the usually rare chance to see underwater from the safety of the ship while listening to your captain talk smoothly, occasionally electing excited responses from you. Law has found you in the same spot multiple times when you'd finished your work for the day early or just had time between errands around the ship.
Your fascination with the view had fueled his own, leading him to find books he had lying around his cabin describing the different underwater ecosystems to lend to you. They quickly filled up your little shelf in your own room and you started developing the bad habit of staying up late to read them.
You'd tried suggesting taking the time to spar between work with one of the guys but Law shot it down fast as you thought he might. As expected, he said while you could move around freely, you still had to refrain from anything that would strain your legs too much for another couple weeks. It made the books all the more handy to help fill your free time until he let you start sparring.
He had given you a new book to read through as you'd finished the last and you were happily starting it on the deck of the ship. It was surfaced now as it continued on course at a lazy pace. The air was warm with a light breeze and the sun was out. It was a perfect day to lounge about the deck and soak in the good weather, which is exactly what everyone was doing for the day. You were reclined back in a chair wearing shorts and a tank top, book in hand, and listening to the idle chatter of some of the crew.
Law and Bepo were off to one side, discussing plans for the next island and making sure the ship stayed on course. Shachi and Penguin were wrestling for some unknown reason. And Bart was gazing out to sea with what was the closest look he could get to content. It was hard to tell with him, he looked angry a lot.
Despite Law liking to run a tight ship, there were quite a few nice lazy days like this. The crew worked hard when needed to so that they could relax more often. They were very carefree.
"(Y/n)-ya, if you keep reading at that pace we'll be out of books for you soon." Law stood over you, smirking.
"I only need them to last until I can start sparring." You gave him a smile, leaning your head back to get a good look at him.
"I'm not sure they'll last that long."
"Yeah...." You scrunched up your nose, realizing you'd finished three books in the last four days. "I'd like to put in a complaint with the captain about the lack of reading material then."
"Captain says find other shit to do." Law chuckled.
"Wow, didn't even think about it."
"Tell you what, work a little harder and I may give you a small allowance for the next stop we make."
You scoffed. "I already work pretty hard! I think I've earned a couple more things to read around here."
"You've only done enough to pay me back for rescuing you out of that cell."
"You never mentioned me owing you for that!" You sat up and flipped around, almost falling down with the chair. The only thing keeping it up was Law leaning a foot against it.
"No, but you did owe me either way. I could've left you there you know."
"Well fine." You puffed your cheeks out and pouted. "When do we reach the next island?"
"A couple days. Not enough time for you to earn that allowance~" He snickered as your pout turned to a glare. That was until you saw a single raindrop hit the tip of his nose.
Both of you shared a confused glance before looking up at the still clear sky. Another drop fell and another.
"C-captain!" Bepo yelled from across the deck, panicked.
But the realization of what was happening hit too late as the rain fell down in sudden waves and the sea took a turn for the worse, now bucking the ship around.
"Get inside! We need to submerge!" Law yelled to the crew as dark clouds finally rolled in to accompany the torrential downpour.
You let out a yelp as the ship bucked especially hard, knocking the chair out from under you and sending you careening along the now slick deck. You came to a stop at the railing and pulled yourself up. The rain was coming down so hard it was impossible to see the door from where you stood. Voices were drowned out and you felt panic hit hard as rogue waves crashed into the Polar Tang.
You gasped for air and slammed against the rails as the ship took another hard hit. Getting inside was going to be difficult to say the least. The ship rocked in your favor, leaning towards where the door should be and you pushed off the rails, letting yourself slide across the deck. It was a great idea, until it wasn't. The door came in to view through the blanket of rainfall, along with the soaked forms of your captain and Bepo and the giant wave of water coming up behind the ship.
With nothing to grab on to, you were at the mercy of the storm. Law locked eyes with you as the wave fell onto the deck. You swore you heard him scream your name but the wave hit you right at the same time and threw you back into the rails. You opened your mouth to cry out as you saw stars and pain laced your body, but water rushed down your throat instead, effectively muffling you. The force of the wave was enough to drag you overboard as it fled back to the ocean.
It was funny. Once below water, everything was calm. The thunderous sound of the rain was drowned out, there were no rough waves pulling you around, it was almost nice. But you had to get back on board before they submerged. With a few strong kicks, you broke through the surface, gasping for air just in time for another wave to push you back down underwater. Anxiety swelled up again as you tried to shake off the sudden dizziness caused by the last hit and the lack of oxygen. At this rate, making it back on board was the least of your worries, you just wanted to not die today. There were still things to argue about with Law damnit.
You tried again, this time reaching the surface and being able to get a few good gulps of air in as you frantically looked for the ship. It was still close by and above water thankfully. You threw yourself into swimming to it, grateful that the storm wasn't being too aggressive with you right now.
You felt a surge of relief as you clung to the metal side of the ship. At some point of falling into the sea, either you or the Polar Tang had gotten turned around but it worked in your favor. You were hanging off the back of the ship with the rails right in reach. It took a few attempts but you managed to grasp the base of a rung and pull yourself back on deck. Your limbs shook as you steadied yourself and fought the pain radiating from your back. The hit against the rails earlier was beginning to take it's toll.
"(Y/n)-ya!" You looked up and saw a nauseated looking Law calling you from one of the higher decks.
"Good news, I'm not dead!" You yelled back.
Hopefully he heard you over the storm, not that the comment was important, but still. He leapt down, landing at your feet without sliding around on the slick deck. An involuntary gasp left you as he picked you up.
"Hold on, we need to get back in quickly, there's no telling how long this will last."
You clutched to his front, burying your face into his chest as he climbed back up to the upper decks effortlessly. Once the roar of the sea subsided and the sound of the door closing behind you indicated you were back inside, you released him and looked around. The entire crew had their eyes on you, watching with bated breath.
"I'm not dead guys, just waterlogged."
They burst to life, some giddy with laughter and others, like Bepo and Penguin, were in tears, spouting about how relieved they were.
"Get this ship underwater before the storm destroys it." Law barked. "I'm taking (Y/n)-ya to the infirmary, call me if any other problems arise."
Everyone scattered to follow orders and Law brushed past them, still holding you firmly against his chest.
"I-I can walk now Captain." You started shivering from the cold, teeth chattering, the whole nine yards.
"No you can't." He shot back gruffly.
"I can too, put me down." You wiggled around as well as your freezing body would let you.
"Fine." Law stopped in his tracks and dropped you right on your ass. "Try then."
"What the hell your problem?" You attempt to get back on your feet but each time you collapsed back down, your legs unable to keep you up. You finally gave up, glaring at Law from your spot on the ground.
He didn't answer, but picked you back up with a smirk on his face and continued to the infirmary. He opened the door with a foot and placed you on the table inside.
"My problem," He locked the door. "Is you nearly died and even after that you still want to argue like a spoiled child."
He let out a groan. The sea water was still having an effect on him, he must have been on the deck looking for you in the water the entire time. You covered your eyes as he suddenly tossed his hat to the side and took off his shirt.
"C-captain what are you doing?!" You knew you were blushing like a school girl and even in your cold, beat up state, you were too modest to let him see.
"Getting some of this salt water off." There were two solid thumps as his shoes came off. "Relax, I'm keeping my pants on."
You peeked through your fingers to see him smirking at you. He still looked a little unwell from the water but it wasn't stopping him from functioning.
"You're going to want to take those clothes off before you freeze. I'll take you to the bath to warm up after."
"Um, no?" You were shaking like a leaf but you'd rather freeze than get naked in front of him. "I won't let Bepo see me naked, what makes you think I'd let you?"
Law walked up to you, water dripping from his unruly black locks. "Because I'm your doctor right now, not some pervert."
"That look on your face says otherwise."
His smirk instantly dropped and was replaced with a frown. "This is what I'm talking about. You're shit about taking orders."
"Here's a fun fact for you, most women don't like being ordered to strip!"
He gave up on arguing with you, picking you up once again and marching to the bathroom. "You owe me for saving you again, I'm not letting you freeze to death before you pay me back."
"Hey, ou-" You yelped when he dropped you in the tub. It turned into you cursing him and struggling as he held you down by your shoulder. At least until he turned on the warm water and it washed over your cold, sore body.
Once you'd relaxed he let go of you and left for a second, returning with a towel in hand and another draped on top of his head. You shot him looks through half lidded eyes as the cold left your body slowly and was replaced with more prominent aches and exhaustion. He simply ignored you, sitting on the edge of the tub as he dried off his hair.
Now that you didn't feel like a solid block of ice, you noticed his tattoos went further than his knuckles and forearms. More of them climbed up to his shoulders and there were a couple on his chest and back. He was much more well toned than his shirts led you to believe too.
"You're going to have to change clothes at some point." He grumbled, removing the towel from his head.
You quickly averted your gaze. "All my stuff is in my room, I don't have a spare change here."
"I do. Did you hit anything when you went overboard?" He quickly changed the subject to keep you from arguing more.
"Just my back." You were starting to feel too tired to argue anyway.
"Lean forward." He pulled at your shoulder lightly and you complied, hugging your knees to your chest and closing your eyes.
His touch was gentle as he felt around your spine. Instead of pulling away like you usually do, you let him do his work without a complaint. Besides when he pressed into an especially tender spot, you were still, even finding it relaxing.
"There's going to be a nasty bruise there in the morning but that's it. You got off easy." His hand slid away and you opened your eyes to find his golden ones staring at you. "Did that not bother you?"
"No, that's a first isn't it?" You leaned back, debating turning the water off.
"Some things get easier with time." He said.
The silence that followed was a bit uncomfortable for you. Law stayed at the edge of the tub and you were hyper aware of his lack of clothing with only his pants hanging loosely from his waist. He seemed lost in thought, gnawing at his bottom lip while staring out into space. When you had enough of it you turned off the water and got up slowly. Everything was sore but your back was really killing you.
Your movement pulled Law from his thoughts long enough for him to hand you the extra towel he brought in and hover a hand over your side in case you fell.
"I think I got it this time." You wrapped the towel around yourself and carefully stepped out of the tub.
"Alright, I'll get you something to change into then." He made sure you were steady before leaving. There was the sound of one of the cabinets in the other room opening and closing and then he was back. "I know they won't fit right but you don't need to be running around the ship like that."
"A little water in the hallway isn't a big deal." You huffed.
"I don't know if you noticed, but today was a bad day to wear white." He gave you his signature smirk.
Sure as shit, you'd forgotten you'd worn a white tank top today. It was completely see through, showing off your bra and if anyone got behind you, probably the mark on your back.
"I knew you were a pervert."
"Wha- no!" Law growled, shoving the clothes at you.
You laughed and took them. "Okay, I'll change, just wait outside or something."
"I can't leave until you're done. I'm not dealing with you falling and hurting yourself more." He crossed his arms and returned to his cool demeanor. You weren't going to win this battle.
"Turn around then." He still faced you. "Please?" You asked, your voice a little softer.
He rolled his eyes but did as you asked, much to your relief. "Don't leave anything wet on, I'm not giving you anything for a cold."
It's like he knew you weren't planning on taking off your underclothes.
"Fine." You huffed and dropped the towel to the side to peel off your shirt.
You threw it in the tub, the shorts following not long after. You hesitated before removing your panties quickly and tugging the spare pants on. They were a pair of Law's typical blue jeans with black spots covering them. The issue with them was they were entirely too long. You got them up and over your hips okay, they hugged a bit more than you were used to but that was tolerable.
Next thing you knew though, you were tripping over the pant legs. You let out a surprised squeak as you fell forward, catching yourself on Law's shoulder.
His hand grabbed yours as he looked over his shoulder. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, just don't look!" You righted yourself and pushed his face back around before you could think about it. "I tripped on the pants is all." You finished changing, adding your bra to the pile of wet clothes and throwing on the black short sleeved button up shirt he gave you. It clung to your chest a little tightly but you were covered. "Done."
Law faced you and immediately turned three different shades of red. "You're good then, take it easy the rest of the day."
"That's it? You were insisting on sticking around for me to change and now I get the okay to do whatever without supervision?"
"Yes, you'll be fine." He cleared his throat and kept glancing at you, still beet red.
"I think you just wanted to see me in your clothes. Wait till the crew hears how much of a pervert their captain is." You felt a grin tug at your lips as his eyes grew wide.
"Don't say anything to them." He hissed.
"So it's true!" You giggled, stumbling past to beat him to the door.
"I am not and I change my mind, you're on supervised bed rest for the remainder of the day, come back here!"
