Chapter Three
I slip around the corner when the two men leave the room and when I get inside, I see that the mystery man was right. There is a small red stain, about the size of a baseball, on my comforter.
"What's this?" I ask. Val turns around with wild eyes and stutters a little bit at first. She turns her eyes back away from me and starts to busy herself with folding her own sheets.
"Uh, I'm really sorry. Its some of my pomegranate juice. I didn't mean to spill it." She frets. "I'll wash it for you if you want." She offers and I sigh.
"No, it's okay. I got it." I smile a little bit and she returns it with a faint grin. I can tell by the look in her eye that she's lying. But I don't know what she would want to keep from me. Why the hell is it such a big deal that her and some guys were drinking juice in our room?
Unless it wasn't juice. I'm no nark, I wouldn't care if she was drinking alcohol. That's her own decision and who would I be to judge?
Out of nowhere, the door bursts open and a mass of people rush in. How did they get the door unlocked? It's then that I see that the doorknob is lying crushed on the floor.
"Va-" The man in front starts to say but his eyes land on me and he goes silent. Valentina looks stunned. I survey those who are now standing in the middle of my dormitory and they all look quite strange. They don't necessarily look from this time period. The blonde one in the back has an old style ruffled dress shirt with a high collar, and the woman of the group looks like you just pulled her out of a 90's music video with high waisted jeans and a crop top.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Val screeches. "Why are you in my dorm?" Her eyes dart back and forth between me and the cluster of people vigorously, and her breathing starts to quicken.
"Is she-" Val shakes her head quickly, cutting them off. "Well I thought I should stop by and... Say hello."
"Who are these guys?" I ask skeptically.
"Friends." Val says through her gritted teeth. "Jagger, Renika, Mayer, and.......Dean?" she looks even angrier. "You brought Dean?"
"He was just as worried as we are." the blonde one counters.
"That doesnt mean you can just bring my brother here!" Valentina fumes.
"Wait, he's your-" her eyes dart back at me and she looks like she might explode in a minute if this doesnt stop.
"I have two brothers. And a sister." She doesnt bring her gaze to mine when she says this. She scoffs it like shes just trying to get me out of the way. I start to stutter out some jumbled words and Valentina interupts me again-this time more fearful. "Madison, leave. Don't come back for a few hours. Please, just go."
This room is as much mine as it is hers, she can't keep going and kicking me out to hang with her freaky friends who all look half dead. That's one thing I did notice, they're all very pale. Even Val who is supposedly Italian is practically white in the face. The only part of them that seems truly alive is the eyes- all a radiant glowing silver. Contacts, maybe?
"No." I stand my ground. "This is my room. I'm not leaving."
"I'm not trying to be rude. I'm trying to help you!" She pleads desperately.
"Help her?" The tall dark featured man in front says in a low gravelling voice. "Help her what, run? From us?" He bares a wicked grin. "What could we possibly do?" Valentina looks like shes about to start sweating and her face appears like shes going to scream.
"Don't do it, Val. You'll put us all in danger." The girl glowers at her.
Val's breath hitches and she lets it out. She screams. It's the loudest thing I've ever heard. Suddenly, the window shatterand the sunlight streams into the room. All five of them shriek and cower into the corner for refuge. Why are they freaking out like this? What's so bad about a bright sun? Maybe it has something to do with why Val told me never to open the blinds.
But why?
