Chapter Two

Elijah Hurst's POV

It doesn't make sense. Everytime I thought I figured it out, another question will pop up leading me back to zero.

It has been 3 days since I wake up from my injured state after the car accident. And in that span of time I'm trying to play Sherlock to link stuffs and find out the reason it happened. Believe me, I attempted to block my thoughts about the present problems but I just can't help it. Especially when most of the time you only have yourself to converse with in these four corners of the room.

The thing that really triggers my curiosity is my difficulty about my best friend and my boyfriend. I can't understand what, when and how the hell they have gained courage to deceived me. Because you see, we are friends since our pampered days. The three of us basically grow up together. I am definitely sure our bond is stronger than any friendship out there. But guess what, I am wrong again. When will my thoughts be correct?

I shake my head. Those thoughts suddenly making my head ache. Feeling my eyes water again, I furiously wipe it away.

I just like to feel a little less dead but it isn't working.

Three knocks from the door bring me up at the situation at hand. Veronica the doctor smiles at me amusingly when she entered.

"Let me guess, you're thinking unpleasant things again." She eyes me knowingly. Her eyes squinting, revealing wrinkles around her eyes.

I have been knocked unconscious for a week and Veronica is the one who is taking care of me. She is a very nice woman keeping me company since I woke up.

"I told you to take it easy. You know dear, it doesn't do any good to improve your condition." She shakes her head disapprovingly. Settling herself in my bed, she caresses my hair with her wrinkling hands.

"I don't know what problem are you facing right now. But I think you should focus on healing yourself first. You cannot put the pieces together if you yourself is teared apart." Veronica's gentle smile remains as she said those words.

For the hundredth time, I suddenly feel like crying again. Her words striking straight to my heart. I'm such a weak girl. All the time I have the strong desire to tell Veronica everything. But I just can't gain enough courage to put those hurtful events into words.

I just don't want to be seen weaker than I am right now.

"Why are you so good to me?" My voice cracked as I blink so many times to stop the stupid tears threatening to fall.

Veronica let out a youthful laugh. "Well lets just say, I hate seeing a beautiful girl like you crying." She winks playfully as my face redden.

I'm not really good at handling compliments. I like to think they are just either kidding me or just helping me feel better.

Veronica makes herself busy checking my IV drips. My body is still sore from the accident. Beside from my fracture left leg there's no serious injuries inflicted upon me. Veronica said that my leg is afflicted with incomplete fracture, which means the bone is cracked but it isn't separated into two parts. And to properly heal my leg, the broken bone should restrict its movements. That's why my leg is casted when I woke up and it should remain casted for at least One and a half month. I also have few bruises and wounds around my body but they have started to heal.

"Elijah are you sure you don't want to contact any of your relatives? I'm sure they are getting worried." Veronica look at me briefly before busying herself again.

I bit my lip nervously before murmuring my response. "I'm not ready to face them." Everyday Veronica attempts to convince me into calling them but for now, nothing can change my mind.

"Alright. I understand. Just call me when you changed your mind." She said kindly before making her way to the door.

I stiffen when I realized something. Shoot! How did it slipped my mind!

"Uhm Veronica!" I wince at my high pitched voice. I'm surprise Veronica didn't jump from it. "I don't have money to pay for my hospital bill." I voiced out nervously. Maybe that's why she keeps reminding about my relatives because she knows I don't have money to pay for my own bills.

She then smiles at me again. I must say she looks younger when she smiles. I can't help but thought, I used to be like her. Smiling and laughing in little things or sometimes for no reason. I'm starting to miss my old self.

"Oh dear, you don't have to worry about it. Oh my gosh! Did I forgot to tell you?" My eyebrows creased curiously. What is she trying to say?

When Veronica saw that i'm confused. She lightly tap her forehead with her palm. "I'm getting older." She whispered but my ears manage to caught it.

"Dear what i'm trying to say is, you don't have to pay any bills. The boss take care of it. Besides you are not in the hospital!" Veronica mentioned it like it is the most obvious thing in the world.

I just stare at her dumbfounded. What boss?! What I'm not in the hospital?!

I try processing all the information she just said but my brain seems like it had been affected by the accident. I must ask Veronica to check it up again. My brain surely isn't doing its job satisfactorily.

My mouth opens but no words came out. I'm sure I look like a fish out of the water. I suddenly forgot how to speak.

"I'm so sorry dear." Veronica gently rubs my shoulder. "You know this oldy isn't getting any younger." She said sheepishly.

"What?!" I finally recovered. "What do you mean I'm not in the hospital?!" I ask her panicking. My hands flying out dramatically.

"Dear, relax." She tries calming me down.

"Relax?! After what you just said, you told me to relax?" I cried out. This woman is insane if she thinks what she said is relaxing.

"Oh my god! It is like in the books I'd read. You guys purposely bumped me with that stupid car! And then you kidnapped me! You let me heal my wounds pretending to be kind and all but soon afterwards you gonna auction me. You will let monsters like you make me their slave. How dare you! People like you doesn't see how important human rights is! This is against the law! I'll sue you all!" I was out of breath when I manage to finished my rant. I just want this woman to realize that what they're doing is illegal.

Suddenly I am left more puzzled when the doctor bursts out laughing. Her lively laughter echos through the walls of the small room we are in. After a while, I notice Veronica's face redden as she attempts to keep her laughter at bay.

I pout. "Let me guess, my conclusions are wrong?"

"Oh dear!" Veronica rubs off the tears in the corner of her eyes as she looks at me funnily. "You sure read a lot of books." She laughs a little bit more.

My cheeks heating up as I smile at her sheepishly. This is embarrassing.

Veronica pat my cheek affectionately. "Okay, before your imagination go wild again let me explain things first. But I'm afraid I don't have all the answer for your questions."

I nod eagerly at her. I badly want to know what I get myself into. "Well, first of all you're in the boss's house. When the accident occurred, he immediately took you here. You need an urgent medical care that time but the hospital is far. His house is nearer, complete with medical tools and equipments and doctors that can easily aid at you that's why he didn't hesitate to bring you here." Veronica recited it gently like a teacher explaining a lesson to its students.

"Uhm, why does your boss have doctors and hospital equipments in his house?" I hesitantly asked Veronica.

Well it isn't normal to have a make shift hospital in a house. I can't grasp the logic on it.

"Well maybe because his workers are prone to accidents?" She shrugs her shoulders at me.

There's something about how Veronica said it. I know she only gives a fraction from the whole story. I want to know more.

"Your boss must be loaded. What is he up to? Is he some kind of businessman?" My curiosity spiking up more.

"He is indeed a businessman." She replied shortly.

"What kind of business?" My brows creases. I hope Veronica isn't telling lies at me.

"I… I don't know. I don't really stick out my nose to anyone's business. I'm contented here, minding my own." She winks at me.

I am really tempted to ask more from it but then I realize Veronica actually have a point. It isn't necessary for me to know everything about her boss.

"Can I at least have your boss's name?" I look at Veronica hopefully. I badly want to thank him for helping me out.

I knew the accident is all my fault. I wasn't paying attention that time but still he didn't left me bleeding in the road. Instead he puts me in somewhere safe. Heck! I'm probably dead right now if he doesn't have a good heart. I immediately cringe at the thought of me laying lifeless at the asphalt road. He saved me. I owe my life to her boss.

"Of course dear." Veronica's brown eyes glint when I mentioned about her boss's name.

"Keegan Averitt is the name." Goosebumps immediately appear to my skin for finally hearing the mysterious name.

Keegan Averitt is my savior's name…
