Chapter 4

I stood in the shadows as i watched everyone go into school. I knew i needed to go in but, i really didn't want to. I mean, no one really wants to go to school but, i had a reason that was much different than theirs and of worthy cause.

Then i had an idea. I would go in for attendance and slip out before first period. Then I could avoid Marcus without having to hide in the bathroom until the last second. A strategy that hardly ever worked anyways.

I waited until the front of the school was almost empty before stepping out of the trees and walking towards the doors. I saw some frequent bullies standing on the steps and put my head down so the wouldn't notice me. Then i went inside and to the attendance room. I sat down at my desk and sighed.

I hope this works.

The teacher came in and began calling out names. When my name came i answered as always and then shrunk away as the entire room turned their eyes on me. This happens every day so its not really a surprise. Everyone looks at me because they don't think i belong here and sometimes I think that too. After attendance had been called the teacher gave his boring speach of news then we were released to go to classes.

I had only done this once before and it had worked perfectly. I walked slowly as everyone rushed to the classrooms so they wouldn't be late. Then once the halls were almost empty i slipped into the bathroom.

I heard some talkng and peeked around the corner to see some guys washing their hands. I took a deep breath before stepping into view amd going into one of the stalls to wait.

After about two minutes i heard them leave the bathroom. I stepped out of the stall i was in and looked around to make sure I was alone. I was so i grabbed the stool for the short people and put it under the window. I stepped up and peeked out. There was no one outside so, i lifted the latch and opened it up. I threw my back-pack outside on he ground. Then i jumped up to the window myself, kicking the stool away in the process so as not to make it look suspicious. I hopped out the window and landed softly on the grass. Then i stood on my tiptoes to close the window.

I turned around as i picked up my back-pack and bolted for the street. I made my way to the trees so i wouldn't be seen leaving the school.

I went through the woods and to the abandoned orphanage. When I saw it come into view i sighed in relief. I opened the door and stepped in. I put my bag on the floor and went to the hammock to sit down.

I relaxed immediately when my back settled in to the softness. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep. After laying there for about ten minutes i frowned and sat up, unable to sleep.

I can't go home. What should i do?

I looked around and nodded. It had been quite a while since i last cleaned this place. It had gotten really dirty and could use a good cleansing.

I stood up and grabbed the broom i had brought here off the wall.

I picked things up off the floor as i swept the area. Then once that was done i mopped and scrubbed the floors and windows. I cleaned the front desk and fixed the old computer sitting there. I had meant to do that for a while but, never had the time.

To clean the entire place took me about three hours. When i was finally done, i fell onto the hammock tiredly. I looked at my watch. It was only 11:30. I lay there for a while exhausted to the bone.

I woke up an hour later. As i sat up i heard a noise from the reception desk. I stared at it, afraid to see what it was. Then i heard a shuffling as if there was a person behind it. I stood up and made my way over slowly. I grabbed pocket knife i always carried for protection. I held it up and jumped around the corner. I relaxed immediately and laughed at what i saw.

It was only Sami.

I closed my knife and put it back in my pocket. He was playing with the toy i bought him a few weeks ago. It was a hard, plastic bone with treats in it. He was trying to get them out.

I walked over and pet his head as he continued to bite the bone and claw at it. Me, being a sympathetic person, felt bad that he was trying so hard to get something he couldn't have so, i stood up, opened the drawer with the bag of biscuits and handed him one. The second he saw it he let go of the bone and grabbed the treat, the bone now completely forgotten.

I giggled. "Slow down or you'll choked on it, silly."

He ignored me and nibbled on the bone happily. I gave him one last stroke before going over to the newly fixed computer.

Switching it on i inspected the software to see what still worked, what should be fixed or changed and what needed to be thrown out all together.

The printer still worked surprisingly and actually still had ink. The files on the orphanage were damaged but, nothing i couldn't fix. (I was good with computers.)

I checked the Internet and i was happy to see i still had Wi-Fi. I looked over the tabs that, for some reason, were still up and saved. They were mostly tabs from stores for new beds and things. The stuff you would expect from an orphanage reception desk computer.

I turned it off and looked around. The place was now quite clean and i was happy with my hard work. I got up and headed for the stairs. I wanted to make the beds. It was the only thing had not done while i was cleaning. I knew no one was going to sleep in them but, it made the place homey and i wanted it to be my home since the place that was supposed to be my home was actually the home of demons that call themselves my parents.

When i finished i went back downstairs. I was about to open the door when i heard voices outside. I froze, my hand on the nobb.

"This the place?"

"Yeah. Its said that its haunted."

"Really?"

"Yeah. By a maid or somthing."

"Why by a maid?"

"'Cause whenever someone goes in there its always clean and things have been moved to other places."

I couldn't help but, stifle a laugh. They were talking about me. Apparently I'm a ghost now.

"Thats creepy. Are we going in?"

My heart picked up and I whipped around, headed for the stairs. I rushed up them and into one of the rooms. I closed and locked the door. I looked around for a hiding spot.

Then my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach as i realized I had left my bag and things, out in the open, downstairs. I put my ear to the door and listened. I could hear them trying to get the door open.

I took a deep breath and headed back downstairs quickly to grab my things. I knew it would take them a few minutes to actually get it open because it had a lock that didn't work very well but, would keep out the animals. As i was passing a room i saw a duffle bag on the bed. I remembered what was in it and suddenly had the most evil idea.

*******

"You sure there's a ghost in here? I haven't seen a thing."

"Of course there is! Don't you see how clean it is? I can even smell the soap!"

"Yeah but, i don't see why we're here. If there really is a ghost its not going to come out."

I watched them as they passed the room i was in. I had on an old dusty maid outfit and i had put a cloth over my head, with a light inside that showed the outline of my face. I had grabbed my things and then hidden in this room to wait for them.

Now that they were here, i stepped out and ran across the hall to the room on the other side. They heard me and whipped around.

"Wh-what was that?!"

"Pro-probably just some animal. Nothing to worry about!"

I held in a giggle. They entered one of the rooms and looked around. I stood right outside the door. When i saw them go to see if the lamp would turn on i said in a loud, girly, voice, "Don't touch that! I just cleaned!"

They both gasped and turned towards the door. "Who's there?!"

I was silent.

They both took a step back. "Hello?!" I remained quiet and hidden.

"H-hey, lets get out of here!"

"Ch-chicken?"

"No! I just think its a d-dumb idea to stay!"

I was holding the broom in my left hand and the mop in the other. I hadn't yet turned the light under my hood on and was going to lure them into a darker room before i came out to actually scare them.

I had closed the curtains in one of the rooms and made sure it was as dark as night.

I backed into a room as they stepped out. They turned my direction. I pushed something over and it fell in their path. They froze.

"L-lets go this way."

"O-ok."

They turned around just the way i wanted. The way they were going led to a dead end. The dark room was on the left and the only room unlocked.

I ran across the hall again. They got scared and went right where i wanted them. I went in at the same time without them seeing me. They slammed the door and locked it. Once again i, painfully, held in a laugh.

They went to the back of the pitch black room and stood there petrified. I took a step forward, scraping my feet on the ground to make noise.

"Its in here with us?!"

I suddenly turned the light on and the outline of my face lit up. "Why are you here?! This is my orphanage!" I screeched.

They both screamed and i tried to contain my laughter. "Ah! It is in here! And its blocking the door!"

I took another step forward and they both backed up. "Get out! Get out! Leave my orphanage alone!"

I moved just enough for them to run past then i chased the down the hall and stairs and out the door, all the while yelling, "Get out of here! Get out or feel my anger!" They screamed the whole time.

When they were gone i fell to the floor in a fit of giggles. "Oh, my god! I have never seen guys scream like that! Hehe!"

When my laughter calmed down i picked up my things and headed for home. It was the first time i went home not worrying about what my parents might do if i was late.

I never knew i could be so evil!
