CHAPTER 2: The Origin
" Are you ready Joe?", dad asked as we got prepared for the Experiment.
" Sure dad", I replied," Just hope this will work out well".
" It will Joe, I know it will. Don't doubt my intelligence. I'm half as smart as you are Joe".
" True. But do you think what we're doing is right?".
" What do you mean by that Joe?".
" Don't get me wrong dad. I really want to see this Project M go successful. Just don't want Max's prediction on this Project come true".
" Forget that. He's long gone. And today is the day I'll silence my enemies who looked down on me and laughed at my face".
I sighed," Whatever you say dad".
" That's my son", my dad, James Benson, said with a smile," Just wish your mother was here to see this".
The thought about my mum sent a bit of frustration in my spirit. I was a year old when my mom abandoned my father. They had serious arguments, mainly resulting from Dad neglecting his Parental duty as a father, always coming home late, and shifting all the workloads on her. This became unbearable for her, and so one day Dad came back home, only to see a letter and his motherless baby. She vanished into the tin air, as through she never existed at all. My dad now had to struggle to raise me up to the son he wanted me to be. Perhaps this finally taught him a lesson: Put you family first.
I buried my thoughts aside and got prepared for Project M. The 'M' stands for Mutation. As me and my dad were going, James, swimming in his thoughts, was debating whether what he was doing was the right thing. After all, what might go right may actually go wrong. Max' statement haunted his mind, and this made him angry and all the more determined to carry out his plan. It must work, he thought, it has to.
We finally arrived at the highly advanced Laboratory, which was filled with different kinds of equipment and chemicals. In the middle sat a Machine mark Mut-7, a name my father had proudly given, which was now surrounded by many scientists who marvelled at its designs.
" James, I want to see you now", a voice spoke from upstairs as we entered the lab.
" General? I'll be right there in a sec", was dad's reply.
General Lucas waited for my father as the latter discussed with his fellow scientists and then climbed the stairs to meet him.
I sighted my lovely Ana upstairs, who steered at the machine with a disapproving look on her face. I too took the stairs and walked up to her. I somehow felt uneasy as she still borne that look. I saw that she was also frowning.
" Hey darling", I greeted her.
" Hey dear", she said with that same frown on her face.
" Why the frown Ana?".
" I think this isn't going to work".
" What! Why Ana?".
" I'm not talking about our relationship Joe. I'm talking about this Project M of a thing".
" Why do you think such thing?".
" I just don't know Joe. Just have the feeling that something bad is going to result from all this".
" Nothing bad is going to happen Ana. I'll be right here to protect you".
" I may not be the Science type, but I know that this Project of a thing might not prove to be helpful".
" I've told you, nothing bad is going to happen. Trust me Sweetheart".
" I wish I could, but remembering what my dad told me makes me feel that this whole thing isn't worth it".
" What did he told you?".
" He said that even if the project was successful, if used in the wrong hands, the results will be disastrous. And also, I wonder why Lucas approved what his predecessor disapproved".
Those words struck me. I too had wondered why Lucas allowed dad's project to continue, even though he himself was there when Max rejected the project. I looked at them as they chatted, with my dad looking very excited and Lucas looking pleased.
" I suspect him Joe. I don't know why but I suspect him".
I was about to reply when dad's voice echoed throughout the lab," No more chatting folks. The project is about to begin!".
" Bye Joe", she said and planted a kiss on my check. I too said bye and left automatically as if the kiss programmed my brain to obey her.
A rat was placed inside the machine, while the serum was vapourized and released into the rat's chamber. While this was happening, the machine started malfunctioning and producing sparks which frightened some of the scientists. Lucas ordered that the machine should be shut down. Dad tried to shut it down, but it disobeyed the order, as the systems where now jammed and electric sparks freely escaped from the wires.
We had to evacuate the people immediately. Everyone ran for his dear life, and I dragged my father away, as the latter was shocked and disappointed at his misfortune. Before we reached the door, I looked back and saw that Lucas was trapped inside. Lucas looked back at the machine and saw that it was about to fire a gaseous blast. I yelled out in terror, and was shocked to my bones when Ana appeared from nowhere, pushed Lucas aside, and got hit by a greenish blast right in the face.
