Chapter 1: The Mutation Outbreak

The Atmosphere was pleasing to look at. The clear blue sky brought smiles on children's faces as they happily walked with their parents. It was a Saturday, which meant no school. The streets were flooded with people and cars, and at the centre of the city was the Morgan Hospital, one of the best Washington had ever seen.
The nicely decorated Hospital was known for saving lives. It had a parking lot that was almost filled, and everyone was seen doing his work. The patients were catered and cared for by the staff. They lacked nothing and were healed from certain injuries or cured from certain diseases. If there was a Hospital that one should seek medical attention, Morgan Hospital would be the best choice.
A goodlooking receptionist sat at the back of the deck, smiling as she was happily chatting with her boyfriend through Facebook Messenger. She looked cute at twenty-five years of age, and some of the male staff members wished that they had her as their lover, but she already had someone else interested in her.
Her boyfriend asked her out on a date, and smiling, she replied yes. She had dated him for almost a year now, and she always dreamed of wedding halls, the voice of choirs, the pastor uniting them as one, the I do's, and the kiss. It brought a smile on her face.
A loud sound erupted from outside. Startled, she looked out and grasped, immediately calling the paramedics. Those who were waiting for their loved ones were shocked at what they were seeing. Everyone had their eyes fixed outside as they gazed at the scene.
A big SUV had pulled into the parking lot. I rushed out of the car and opened the other door, half carrying, half dragging a woman who was bleeding terribly. Her clothes were stained with her blood, and blood was also escaping from her mouth. The paramedics arrived quickly, and without ease she was admitted into the hospital. I was denied from following them and had to stay in the lobby, to hope that she wasn't going to die. This, I never knew, was going to shake my life forever.
After answering the multiple questions from the receptionist and on-lookers, I sat in the lobby, worried seriously over her. Her name is Ana Johns, and my name is Joe Benson
I worked as a scientist and engineer in the government, experimenting on several chemicals and weapons made by our enemies. It was somehow interesting when some of the weapons they made resulted to their downfall as I had managed to figure out how best to overcome them. Many of my fellow scientists marveled at my intelligence and brilliance. There was no need to check my certificates; my character proved it all.
However, there was a time when we went out on a mission in Alaska, in order to deal with some terrorists who had stole many weapons and held many hostages. We set up camp in an unknown location, and General Max, who always wanted the best for his country, called for me. Max was my best friend and was older than me by thirty years. He was very fond of me and seemed to have something very important to discuss with me when I open the curtain of his tent.
" Sit down Joe", said Max as he sat beside a table filled with maps, a pistol, a plastic bottle of dry gin and a compass pointing north. There was a stool opposite his on which I sat. He was toying with his necklace hung round his neck which had a Jesus Christ crucified on the cross. It was made of silver, along with the necklace.
     " I'm I in trouble again?", I asked.
He laughed," You didn't let me even talk Joe".
" Okay then. Speak", I said as I leaned against the table.
" Listen here son", he began," I've been watching you lately. It seems that you're having a crush on my daughter".
" I don't know what you're talking about", I said uneasily, betraying my emotions.
" No need to be afraid son. I'm actually happy for you and Ana".
I was shocked," How did you--".
" I aren't the general for nothing Joe", said Max. He took the gin, emptied its content and threw it perfectly into a waste bin behind me which was by a corner of the tent.
" I can see that now".
Max laughed again," Glad you do. No more being secretive okay? Besides, anything that makes Ana happy makes me happy. And I'm glad she even chose you instead of that young brute named Luke".
     " Whose Luke?".
" Don't know him? He's a newbie, self-centred and a jerk. I wonder how he even managed to get employed. If I was there, even his mother wouldn't be able to convince me to let him in".
" Wow. That's a lot of hate for him".
" Forget him", he said and looked at me eye to eye with a serious look on his face," Now as much as I love this relationship between you two, I would personally want you to always love, protect and cherish every moment with her. That's an order Joe, an order that must be followed to your last breath. Take good care of her always Joe, and never forget the friendship we shared".
     " I will general. I promise"
I gave him a warm hug and he also rapped his hands round me in a father-to-be manner.
As we exited the camp, full of smiles and joy, seeing the soldiers and everyone else busy in one thing or the other, that's when the worst happened.
At that moment our camp got ambushed, and we fought our way through. It was there that I had to use a gun, and although it was against my will, I killed those rotten bastards left and right. I looked round and saw the General, bleeding seriously. I rushed up to him and protected him from the intruders. He whispered my name and was trying to mention a word, maybe probably the person who tried to kill him. Sadly he died, and all I heard from him was:
     "Lu... Lu... Lu...".
He was later replaced by Lucas, who was Max' second in command. Lucas allowed my father to continue his life long dream, the enhancement of humans into superhumans, a project Max had canceled, bearing in mind of the consequences that might occur. My father always said that the serum would work, and when he and some others carried out the experiment, something went wrong, and Ana saved Lucas from the blast. She didn't appear to have any sign of illness or injury, so I thought she was okay. However, Lucas fired my dad, and our pleas fell on deaf ears.
Ana started coughing out blood when we were almost near Morgan Hospital, and I had to quickly pull over as soon as possible. And now as I waited for good news to come, I was about to phone Lucas when screams echoed through the hall. All eyes where fixed on the door, where the noise was coming from. A nurse rushed out, her clothes torn, and she was screaming, telling everyone to run. Blood was on her face, and a hand burst out of the door and pulled her back in. Everyone took to their heels, while I rushed and steered at the blood stained door. Then a figure emerged and attacked me, yawning for my blood.
