Round 7, Part 5

Feathersong nodded when she saw the votes, as though she had expected this outcome. Cats got more desperate the longer this went on. They barely even considered the facts anymore.

She padded up to Badgerpath, and buried her face in his fur. Then, she pulled away, and looked up at him with fiery eyes.

"Badgerpath, you must protect Willowpaw. If our daughter dies, and I know you were here and didn't save her, I don't think that I could forgive you," she told him. He nodded solemnly.

She then padded over to Willowpaw, who was still unconscious in the apprentice den after the attack. She touched her nose to the top of her daughter's head, then padded out of the den.

Feathersong joined Bluepaw, who had already said his goodbyes, and the two cats headed for the StreamClan border.

Berryleaf looked at the remaining cats uncomfortably. It was just him, Robinclaw, Sedgeheart, Badgerpath, Batwhisker, Shadeflight, Ivywing, Blossompaw, and Willowpaw now. Willowpaw was injured, and wouldn't be any help patrolling. Even if they exiled the murderers . . . they might not be able to stop another clan from taking over their territory.

It was starting to get dark again. They had spent a long time burying the cats and mourning, and the days were starting to get shorter. The cats funneled into various dens to sleep, staying with their family members.

Badgerpath slept in the apprentices' den with Willowpaw. He intended to protect her, like he had promised Feathersong he would do. This meant letting no one else sleep in the den, and sleeping between her and the entrance.

Robinclaw, Sedgeheart, and Blossompaw all slept together in the warriors' den. Robinclaw slept by the entrance, to protect her sister and niece in case of an attack. She was an extremely good fighter, and believed that she could take on the murderer.

Meanwhile, Shadeflight and Batwhisker slept in the nursery. Ivywing slept alone in the leader's den, and Berryleaf slept alone in the cramped medicine cat den. He felt uncomfortable surrounded by all of the strong-smelling herbs, but he figured that it was safer than sleeping with any of the other cats. He didn't want to roll over in his sleep and suddenly be killed for annoying the murderers.

As all of the cats slept, the first murderer slunk out of their den and crept into the center of the camp. Their partner met them, to discuss their plans for the night.

"I have to finish off Willowpaw. If she wakes up and remembers me, then I won't be able to get out of a vote," they growled. Their partner shuffled their paws, uncomfortable at the thought of killing the injured apprentice.

"Fine, I guess I'll kill Robinclaw. Well, Robinstar, actually," they replied. The first murderer nodded with approval, a sadistic look on their face.

"I envy you. Getting to kill the same cat, multiple times, in multiple different ways? I would love that," they told their partner. Then, they headed towards the apprentice den, to finish off Willowpaw.

The second murderer headed towards the warriors' den. They knew that their partner would have enjoyed torturing Robinstar. That was why they had chosen to kill her. They could give the leader a quick, clean death, that took away all of her remaining lives. They figured that it was their duty to cause the cats the least pain as possible.

The second murderer started to think, as they crept into the den. Why had they joined their partner anyway? A sense of obligation, perhaps? A sense of importance? Whatever it was, they regretted it, but they couldn't back out now.

As they stood over Robinstar's body, they unsheathed their claws and lifted their paw into the air. Then, in one fast swipe, they sliced all the way through the tabby she-cat's stomach.

They got out of there as fast as they could, and met their partner in the middle of the camp. The two cats confirmed their successes, then returned to sleep.

Badgerpath was the first to wake up in the morning. The first thing he felt was his daughter's blood soaking his fur. He let out a cry of anguish, and tried to nuzzle Willowpaw awake.

The white apprentice was dead. He shakily got to his feet, then walked out of the den and into the nearby nursery. The black and white tom shoved Batwhisker and Shadeflight, trying to wake them up.

"Batwhisker, Shadeflight, please, help. Willowpaw was murdered. I can't carry her out alone," he told them. The sibling looked at each other, then went to help him.

Meanwhile, Sedgeheart had woken up to find her sister, dead in the nest she had insisted on taking. If only Robinstar had slept further from the entrance . . . but it was too late. The serious tabby was gone.

Eventually, all of the cats had gathered in the center of camp, surrounding the bodies of Willowpaw and Robinstar. They glanced at each other warily, before Badgerpath spoke up.

"I'll say it. I think it was Batwhisker. He's stealthy, and could easily sneak by me to kill Willowpaw," the distraught father declared. Batwhisker gaped at him, horrified at the thought.

"And I think that Berryleaf might be the other one. He has been playing innocent this whole time, but what if he isn't? We can never know for sure," Ivywing added. Berryleaf began to protest, and was soon joined by Batwhisker and Shadeflight.

"That's it. No more arguing! We're voting on Batwhisker and Berryleaf," Sedgeheart spat. The cats shut up, and went to vote.
