Chapter 2

Lightkit treaded quietly through the empty camp, hoping as hard as she possibly could that no one would see her. The moon glowed brightly above, about half full. It was almost as amazing as that sunset in Lightkit's dream.

Out of the shadows, her pelt blending perfectly into them, stepped Crowmia, her head held high. Lightkit was suddenly aware of how much her fur glowed in the half-light, almost blinding her as she looked at her paws.

Crowmia padded forward, as quietly as possible. She spread her huge wings, and leaped into the air, beating them in large, powerful strokes. Lightkit followed, a lot less gracefully, and soon found herself a nice air current to glide on. Crowmia stretched out her wings, and powered northwest. Lightkit pumped her shoulders, struggling to keep up with the black and grey she-cat.

Soon, they were flying over a beautiful lake, patches of land much like those in the forest shining in the moonlight. Crowmia suddenly banked a little more to the west, following the scent of something far off. Something salty. They flew and flew, and then, on the edge of the horizon, Lightkit could see the faint outline of the coast.

Crowmia tucked her wings into a steep dive, abruptly snapping them open again just before she hit the wet sand on the beach. Lightkit copied her, and almost got a mouthful of sand. She unsheathed her claws, trying to get a grip on the slippery surface. She wasn't that great at flying yet.

"You should try to practice a bit more." Crowmia's condescending mew broke through the quiet shush of the waves. Lightkit nodded, then turned her head to face the calm ocean beside her. She saw a tiny blue dot skim across the lapping waves, then disappear again, diving into the cold water.

"Who's that?" Lightkit asked.

"Just an eagle." Crowmia answered, though a strange twinkle in her eyes made Lightkit doubt that.

She sat down and curled her tail over her paws, tired from the long flight. The sky was starting to become a nice shade of dove grey, reflecting the dark waters stretched out in front of the two cats.

Crowmia lifted her muzzle into the air, taking deep breaths of the salty air. She closed her eyes, and muttered something Lightkit couldn't make out. And then, all of a sudden, everything disappeared.

Lightkit awoke in the nursery, her brother, Brokenkit curled around her. She realised that she was shivering as Hollycloud lifted her head from under the mess of her kits and asked Lightkit "Are you cold?"

"No." she responded.

Hollycloud rested her head back on her paws, and Petalkit took that as an invitation, and rolled over onto her. Lightkit curled back into a little ball, and tried to sleep.

After a little while, she started to hear the warriors preparing for the day's patrols, so she decided to go out and see if any of the apprentices wanted to play.

Dovepaw was seated outside the apprentices' den, digging into a plump mouse. She looked up as Lightkit came up to her.

"Hi Lightkit! Wanna go play Borders with Brokenkit and Applepaw?" The grey apprentice meowed.

"Yes, please!" Lightkit responded.

The speckled grey she-cat called to Applepaw, who had been talking with his mentor, and then Brokenkit, who sleepily protested as Dovepaw pulled him out of the nursery.

"Who wants to be the evil ShadowClan invaders!?" Dovepaw yowled excitedly.

Brokenkit twitched his fluffy, white tail and fluffed the fur on his back. "Me!" he almost hissed, trying to sound as menacing as a three-moon-old kit could sound. He puffed out his chest and started to strut around, his tail held high in the air.

"Oh, look," he mewed, completely in-character "This is some great-looking ThunderClan land. I bet there's SO much prey here. I'm just gonna come here and take it all for myself now." He rubbed his jaw along the tree stump next to the apprentices' den, leaving some of his scent, as well as some of his long, thick fur, on it.

"Oh no, you don't!" Applepaw and Dovepaw yowled in unison. They both pounced, leaving Brokenkit floored and helpless. He stretched his eyes wide, and pulled back his ears, faking fear. Lightkit sat and watched as he tried to signal to her to attack the apprentices from behind.

"Lightkit, we won't be able to win if you just sit there, gawking at us. ThunderClan and ShadowClan are supposed to fight each other, not sit there and stare while the other Clan steals their territory!" Brokenkit Hissed, still pinned. Just then, Hollycloud walked up to them, followed by Slipstream and Flamewisp.

"Dovepaw, Applepaw, you have training today." mewed Slipstream, sternly. His gaze flicked over Lightkit, mock disgust showing in his blue-green eyes. "And you! " he half spat, half purred, his muzzle directly in Lightkit's face "You had better start learning how to protect Clan borders."

Lightkit could feel tears welling up behind her eyes. She knew that the silvery tom was being sarcastic, but it still hurt.

She rushed back to the nursery, and curled into the smallest ball she could possibly make, sobbing to herself.
