Northbound

Northbound

On a long stretch

Of empty highway,

Cutting through Oklahoma

Flatland,

The fields waving

In the wind.

"Just drive straight,"

You said.

"Can't miss it."

Nighttime chill

Knocking on the window.

I am waiting to see you again.

~

Northbound

On a long stretch

Of nighttime nothingness;

A few cars pass me by,

White lights to remind

Me that I am not alone.

How many more miles

Till I can hold you in my arms,

Till I can kiss your lips,

Till I can kneel before you,

Like a pirate awed at his treasure?

How many more miles

Till I can steal you away

In my ship

And sail through

The Kansas fields

To a little island that

We can call our own.

~

Northbound.

"Just drive straight,"

You said.

"Can't miss it."

A few more miles

Down the road.

I'll be there before

Midnight.

Can't wait

Until I can see you again.
