Chapter 13

Everyone watched Erik as he walked up to the counter and made his order.

"I'm surprised he hasn't tried to punch us in the face yet," Nixie muttered.

"He doesn't know about Cleo and the others yet," Lyla whispered. "Hopefully he'll just buy his juices and leave without starting a fight."

"He started the fight when he took my moon stone," Ondina replied, her eyebrows narrowing.

Rikki made the three juices for Erik and he picked them up, one in each hand, and then he was balancing the other between the cups in his hand.

He turned around and saw everyone looking at him. "Can't I guy get a couple of juices without being stared to death?"

"Erik," Zac stepped forward.

"Zac, old friend. It's been a while," Erik nodded.

"Oh, this is Erik?" Rikki asked, pointing to Erik.

"Erik, we know that it's you," Zac walked half the distance to Erik.

"You know what was me?" Erik asked.

"That you took our moon stones!" Mimmi walked and stood next to her brother.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Erik shrugged.

"Don't play dumb," Zac shook his head.

"No, seriously, I don't know what you're talking about," Erik put his juices down, realising that he might be in the café longer then he was hoping.

"You're making a new trident stone, to activate the Merman Chamber," Mimmi told him.

Erik pretended to think. "Well, I'm not welcome on Mako Island anymore, so how I'm going to get to the Chamber -"

"And since when have you ever played with the rules?" Ondina walked towards Erik and stood next to her best friend.

Erik's lips curled into a smile. "Ondina..."

"Give it up," Zac said to Erik. "Give us the moon stones back, and we will not make this battle as hard as it could be."

"The thing is, I can't do that," Erik shook his head, grinning even more.

"Erik, please," Sirena tried.

"I can't give you something what I don't have," Erik responded. "I don't have your moon stones. It isn't my fault if you're a bunch of clumsy mermaids."

Nixie pushed between Ondina and Mimmi, taking a few steps closer to Erik. "Say that again, I dare you!"

Erik leaved in closer. "What? That you're a clumsy mermaid?"

Nixie raised her hand towards Erik. "No one insults me and my friends and get away with it."

"Leave it, Nixie," Lyla shook her head. "He's not worth it."

Erik raided his eyebrows. "Not worth it, am I?"

Erik sharply ejected his arm towards Zac, and Zac went flying across the room, crashing into the table where they were just sat. The table fell backwards, and the juices poured over him, his blue merman tail appeared.

"Oh, nice one!!" Rikki said sarcastically. "Now guess whose going to have to clean all that up? Me!!"

Erik raised his hand towards Zac again, but Mimmi stood in front of her brother, her hand raised warningly towards Erik.

Erik laughed. "You've got your sister protecting you Zac?"

"If you try hurt my brother again..." Mimmi warned Erik.

Erik held up his hands as if to surrender. "I need to get going," he grabbed his three juices. "See you guys," he said. But he was looking directly at Ondina.

Erik and Ondina made eye contact. Ondina looked into his eyes, and for a few moments she saw the young man that she had met in David's Ocean Café, when she hadn't learnt he was a merman. She didn't see a villainous merman, who was on a mission to remove the magic from her and her friends.

Erik sighed, and walked to the café exit. But before he left he turned around. "I'm sure we'll see each other again, that includes you, Cleo."

Cleo's eyes widened in horror. "How do you now my name?"

Erik grinned. "I've been talking to one of your old friends."

"The only friends I have are Emma, Rikki and Bella," Cleo explained.

"Oh, did I say 'friend'? I meant enemy!" Erik laughed and left Rikki's.

"Do we follow him?" Emma asked.

Bella shook her head. "Like Lyla said, he's not worth it."

"We can't fight him," Evie said. "Not with our magic so weak."

Meanwhile, Erik walked out if the café and headed to Dr Denman's boat. He made sure none of the mermaids were following him. He jumped on board and put the drinks on the table.

"Linda?" He called.

"That's Dr Denman to you," the Dr said, taking off her lab coat and taking her hair out of the pony tail.

"Where's Charlotte?" Erik asked.

"She says she was going to meet us at the Chamber," Linda replied.

Erik nodded, picking up one of the juices and drinking it through the straw.

Dr Denman started up her boat and steered them to Mako Island as quickly as she could.

"Did you see the mermaids?" She asked.

Erik nodded. "And Zac, the merman."

"And Cleo, Emma and Rikki?" Linda asked.

Erik nodded. "Yep. There is also another girl with them: a girl called Bella."

"I don't know who she is," Linda shrugged.

When they got a Mako Island Erik was the first to jump off the boat. He carried his half empty cup of juice, and he carried the one he bought for Charlotte. Linda carried her own.

They went to the Merman Chamber. Erik handed Linda one of the cups and pulled all the moon stones he had collected out of his pocket. There were many of them, Ondina's, Mimmi's, Lyla's and Evie's included.

Erik grinned. "The mermaids didn't even know I had this with me the whole time!!"

"How did you get them all?" Linda asked.

"I have the power to turn invisible," Erik said. "I had to work out where the mermaids would go, and I'd get there a few minutes before and wait for them."

Erik held them up to the entrance, and it opened up for them.

"I thought we could only get in on a full moon?" Linda questioned Erik.

"These stones hold the moons power," Erik explained.

They entered and walked down the corridor to the Chamber.

Sure enough, Charlotte was there. She was standing at the pedestal, looking at the symbols, her hands on her hips as she thought.

Linda walked up her and held out the juice.

Charlotte smiled. "Thanks," she took the drink, grabbed the straw and took a mouthful of juice.

Erik put his cup on the pedestal, and held out the moon stones in his hand. Charlotte and Linda watched as he covered them with his other hand. He closed his eyes, and his forehead wrinkled with concentration.

There was a dark blue electrical light escaping the gaps on his hand, and Linda's eyes widened, and Charlotte took a small step back.

The blinding light slowly faded, and Erik opened his eyes. He removed his hand, and all the moon stones and forged together into one big stone.

"How did.. " Linda began.

Erik grinned and held up his new trident stone. "Ta-da!" He grinned.

Charlotte grinned. "Incredible. Now we can defeat the mermaids?"

Erik looked at the stone. "It's not big enough."

Charlotte's smile faded. "What?"

"The stone," Erik sighed. "It isn't big enough, it won't have enough power."

"Are you kidding me right now?!" Charlotte asked harshly.

"Also, there are those ten mermaids who know what we're up too. We need to try get rid of them so they don't come and interfere."

"The full moon is tomorrow. Do you really want to waste another month trying to sort them mermaids out?" Charlotte asked.

"Charlotte is right," Linda said. "If we want to defeat these mermaids, we can't afford to waste anymore time."

"And all the time I spent collecting these stones will be wasted if they barge in halfway and ruin everything!"

"Well, what are you going to do, fish-boy?" Charlotte asked.

"I have a plan," Erik said, smiling evilly. "We need to eliminate the mermaids, one by one. Maybe we can even get you two something special-" he held up his hand and made it ripple, like his hand was swimming.

"You want us to turn into mermaids?" Linda asked.

"Yeah, I'll need all the help I can get," Erik said.

Linda shook her head. "Half on my job includes diving. If I turned into a fish whilst working, I'll be the one under the microscope!"

"Charlotte?" Erik turned to face her. "Just think: becoming a mermaid!"

Charlotte shook her head. "I can't."

Erik sighed unhappily.

Linda finished off her juice. "Do you mind if I go get some samples?"

"Of?" Erik asked.

"Plants and corals under the sea around Mako? Maybe even a sample of water from the Moon Pool?"

Erik shrugged. "Knock yourself out."

Linda left, and Erik walked up to Charlotte.

"Why don't you want to become a mermaid?" Erik asked her. "Not every girl gets this opportunity. You'd be crazy, turning it away."

"Aren't we trying to take away the mermaids magic?" Charlotte reminded him.

"I wouldn't take yours away," Erik promised her. "Why don't you want to be a mermaid?"

"It's not that I don't want to. It's because I can't ," Charlotte sighed.

"Are you scared of water?" Erik asked. "Are your afraid the water will sting your eyes?"

Charlotte gave a small laugh. "Not at all. It's because... I was once a mermaid, magical powers included. But Cleo and Emma and Rikki rid me of my tail and powers."

"We can go get you another one, and I'm here, so I'll make sure they don't take your tail this time," Erik said.

"No... All the planets in our solar system were in line with our moon. The power of the full moon that night would remove a mermaids powers forever."

"And you were in the Moon Pool?" Erik nodded.

Charlotte nodded. "Even if we tried, I wouldn't be able to get my tail back."

"And that's why you want to take away their magic?" Erik said with realisation.

Charlotte nodded, hey eyebrows narrowing. "I was more of a mermaid then all them three put together, I need to do to them what they did to me."

Erik nodded, and put his arm around Charlotte's shoulders. "And me and Linda will help you. We will get rid of these mermaids' powers, and we do it together, and we will succeed..."
