Chapter 10

Evie, Zac and the rest of the mermaids went back to the car. Mimmi looked through Rita's potions, but she couldn't work out any that would help them find any human girls that had been transformed into mermaids...

So they decided to go to Mako Island for the rest of the day. It was coming close to night fall, and everyone decided it would be best for them to sleep in the Moon Pool that night. They also planned to stay there the night afterwards too, but if they hadn't found any mermaids three days later, they would travel back home.

"It's hopeless," Lyla sighed.

"We'll never find any human mermaids," Ondina agreed, shrugging her shoulders.

"Be positive," Sirena said. "We will find them... We just need to make sure we're looking in the right place."

"And where's that?" Ondina asked moodily.

"Don't be mean," Nixie said, pointing a warning finger at Ondina. "Indeed, this is a difficult task, but we will get it done. If not, well, we'll have to try defeat Erik ourselves.

"With two moon rings and one merman?" Evie asked. "I'm sorry, but that does seem impossible. Especially if Erik has lots of moon stones forged into one trident stone." Evie looked at her moon ring. She didn't want to lose the stone.

"Three," Nixie corrected her. "You have a ring, I have a ring, and Sirena has a ring."

Evie just rolled her eyes.

"Guys, this is no time for arguments," Zac said. "Tomorrow, well give Rita a call, and we'll see if she has any ideas. If not - I'll have to go defeat Erik alone."

"Alone?" Mimmi asked. "Zac, you can't do that!!"

A huge argument then took place. Zac insisted he had to go to the Merman Chamber alone, but Mimmi then explained that it would be too dangerous for him. Evie them joined in the argument, saying that not all the mermaids would be able to go with Zac, and then Ondina asked Nixie is she could borrow her ring, which caused an argument to break between them two. Lyla then joined saying they may as well go straight to the Merman Chamber right then.

Sirena and Mimmi got everyone to calm down, and eventually everyone in the Moon Pool managed to fall asleep, Zac and Evie managed to pull themselves up onto the rock ledge, Sirena, Mimm, and Nixie were sat on the rocks, their heads resting against the wall, and Lyla and Ondina were floating in the water.

They woke up early in the morning, due to a massive scream, coming from Evie.

Everyone woke up: Nixie hitting the back of her head against the wall, Zac falling into the Moon Pool, and Ondina jumped so much Lyla sank several inches under the water.

"What was that!?" Lyla asked when she resurfaced.

Mimmi gave a small smile, pointing at Lyla. "At least it wasn't me who sank this time."

"Could you have screamed any louder?" Nixie asked, rubbing her head.

"Evie, what's wrong?" Sirena and Zac asked.

Everyone turned to look at Evie. She was sat on the ledge, her eyes wide with shock horror, as she stared at her right right hand, looking at her Moon Ring.

Mimmi sighed. "Don't say -"

Evie turned her hand around, her eyes flicking upwards to face everyone else. Everyone looked at her ring...

And the blue moon stone wasn't there...

"Where did it go!?" Sirena asked, sitting up. "Have you checked up on the ledge?"

"Yes, and it's not here!" Evie cried, looking on the ledge.

Zac took a breath and ducked under the water. He resurfaced a few moments later. "It isn't at the bottom of the Moon Pool."

"Now we only have two moon rings," Nixie pointed at Evie, remembering the conversation that they had the previous night.

"Are you sure you had it here last night?" Lyla asked.

Evie gave Lyla a small glare. "Yes, I remember looking at it before we went to sleep."

"But how could someone get in?" Ondina asked. "The only entrance is this one." She pointed to the underwater entrance. "And we would have heard if someone came in, wouldn't we?"

"There was once a land entrance," Sirena said quietly.

But everyone heard her.

"...What??" Ondina shook her head.

Nixie pointed at Sirena, her memories of that evening several years ago rushing back. "That's right. We covered it up. The Mermaid Council didn't even know!!"

"Where?" Lyla asked. Even she didn't know about this entrance.

Sirena held out her arms. Evie grabbed them and pulled Sirena into the ledge. Sirena uses her ring to make her tail disappear and be replaced with her legs, then she walked over to the wall, and waved her hand over one section once. The part of the wall rippled, and then disappeared.

Lyla jumped onto the rock next to Nixie. "What!?"

Sirena turned around to face then. She bit her lip anxiously and entwined her fingers. "Nixie and I saw it one night, we loved Mako so much, we didn't want to leave if Veridia found out about the land entrance to the moon pool. So we covered it up."

"How?" Mimmi asked.

"We used Aquata's moon ring, we hadn't earned ours at that time," Nixie replied.

"Where does it lead to?" Evie asked.

"There's some steps here," Sirena pointed to the floor of the entrance. "There's a dark cave through there, then there's a long narrow hole that leads up to some rocks and a waterfall. It's too steep to climb up."

"And no one else knows about that entrance?" Zac pointed to the entrance behind Sirena.

"No one," Sirena answered.

"But that doesn't explain how they got in," Lyla said.

"Does Erik know about this moon pool?" Mimmi asked Ondina.

Ondina shrugged. "I don't think so."

Everyone checked around the moon pool once more for Evie's missing stone, and Sirena closed the the land entrance.

They swam back to the land, looking for Evie's stone along the way. But they couldn't find it.

Evie began to cry, so Zac had to take her to his Mum's car and stay with her until she stopped.

So the mermaids were on the their own.

"I suggest we look at the Marina," Mimmi said.

"Evie's stone isn't going to be there," Nixie said.

"No, I meant for the mermaids," Mimmi responded, rolling her eyes.

Nixie grinned. "I knew what you meant really."

"Wouldn't the mermaids be avoiding water?" Ondina said. "Why would they be at the Marine Park?"

"I work at a Marina," Mimmi reminded her.

"So where do we go to look?" Lyla said. "I think we should go to the Marine Park."

"Yeah, so if someone gets splashed and jumped into the water we know they're mermaids!!" Nixie pointed at Lyla.

"Nixie!" Lyla half yelled.

Nixie held up her hands as of to surrender. "Don't look at me, I'm just here for comedy relief."

"I'd like to do back to Rikki's ," Sirena said. "We left right after I got splashed, and I think I should go apologise."

"Are you out of your mind?" Ondina asked. "We went there once, and you got splashed, who knows what could happen if we go back?"

"We've been splashed many times at the Ocean Café, yet we continue to go there," Sirena raised her eyebrows.

For once, Ondina was speechless. Nixie and Lyla looked at each other and grinned.

Ondina huffed. "Let's go to the Marina," she decided, turning around and stalking off.

"Does she have any idea where she's going?" Nixie asked.

Mimmi shrugged. "I'm presuming she doesn't. I best go after her."

"I'll go with you," Lyla said.

"And we'll go to the café?" Sirena asked Nixie, who nodded.

The mermaids quickly said goodbye and headed in the different directions.

Nixie and Sirena walked over to the café and entered. Rikki was there behind the counter, talking to Bella, who had a notebook in her hand, and was busy jotting down everything Rikki said.

"And make sure Nate knows," Rikki pointed a warning finger at Bella. "Knowing him he'll come dressed up like an astronaut, or something!!"

Bella laughed. "I'll make sure he knows about the theme for this show tonight."

Sirena and Nixie saw Emma walking up to Rikki and Bella, Emma was carrying a round wooden tray filled with empty glasses.

"Rikki, can you please make sure these get washed up?" Emma asked.

"Sophie should be doing it, but for some reason, she's not here," Rikki rolled her eyes. "When we first hired that girl, she was working extra shifts and always contributing to ideas-"

Rikki looked up, and made eye contact with Sirena and Nixie. Nixie gave Sirena a small shove, and Sirena bravely walked up to the counter.

"Hi," Sirena said, resting her hands on the counter. "I just wanted to apologise for yesterday afternoon, when we left in such a hurry."

"That's no problem." Rikki reached her hand out towards a cup on the counter, but then she noticed it was wet around the rim. She swiftly moved her hand to grab the cloth next to it, and she began to dry the cup.

"I'm sorry for splashing you," Bella said to Sirena.

"It's okay," Sirena smiled. "Accidents always happen."

"But- how come you ran off?" Bella asked.

"My shirt," Sirena said. "I needed to dry it off."

"Is that the only reason?" Rikki asked, putting the cup down.

Sirena looked at Nixie. "What could be any other reason?" Nixie asked.

"Just wondering," Rikki said, though Sirena and Nixie could tell she was getting suspicious.

"Well, this has been fun," Nixie said, slightly sarcastic, grabbing Sirena's arm. "We best be going now."

"No wait," Bella called as Nixie began pulling Sirena to the exit. Bella followed them. "Is everything okay with you two?"

"Yeah, why?" Nixie asked.

"There's something strange going on...something....magical," Bella said.

Sirena and Nixie exchanged a worried glance. "Magic?" Nixie scoffed. "Do you know how ridiculous that is? There is no such thing as-"

But at that moment, a giddy ten year old ran towards them, not looking where he was going. He knocked into a table and his plastic cup went flying.

The water in the cup found its way out of the cup, and spilt on both Sirena and Bella.

They both jumped, looking down at their clothes. They both then gave each other worried looks, as if they knew what was going to happen to the other person.

"Run!" Nixie pushed Sirena. Sirena and Bella both ran across the café and into Rikki's office, just as Zane was leaving.

"What the-?" He began, but he didn't get time to finish, as Bella slammed the door in his face.

Sirena and Bella both fell to the floor. Their legs disappeared, and their tails appeared.

Sirena pushed herself up on her hands and looked. Bella was laid on her back, but she was looking at Sirena.

"You're a-" they began at the same time.

Just then Rikki and Nixie barged into the room, both freezing at the sight.

Everyone sighed. Some explaining had to be done...
