David was right. Deb was not impressed at his failure to follow through on the plan.
He tried his best to explain what had happened, but she was having none of it.
"David, we've been working together for what? Six years now?"
"Yes, almost seven now." Responded David, wondering where she was heading with this.
"I love you honey," she sighed as she shook her head, "but you're an idiot."
David stared at her. "What?"
"You heard me. You are an idiot."
"Gee, thanks Deb." David couldn't help but respond testily.
"I stand by it." Debbie said firmly, but not unkindly. "Give Eleanor enough credit to see through Thomas' douchebag ways. Just because she rejected him doesn't automatically mean she'll turn you down." She took a breath, "Did it not occur to you that maybe the reason she did so was because she likes you?" He shook his head, and she briefly threw her hands up in the air, evidently exasperated, "For Pete's sake, David. Stop defining your worth based on your perception of those around you! If you truly like Eleanor, then try."
"Are you done?"
Debbie crossed her arms, "I don't know, am I? That depends on whether you're going to listen to what I've just said."
They stood in silent opposition, staring each other down. Both at an impasse.
Surprisingly, it was defiant Deb who folded first.
Her voice softened as she said, "Look, honey. I know you're nervous, but just trust me on this. Please." She paused, "Ask Eleanor out. If she doesn't accept, then I'll-" she stomped her foot, "I'll eat my hat!"
"You don't wear hats, Debbie." David's lip twitched.
"Well then I'll buy one and then eat it!"
"You're that confident?" He queried with a smile.
"That I am." Deb nodded firmly.
