--------------------------------------
Samantha was a shy girl who tended to keep to herself. She was quiet and introverted, often preferring to listen rather than speak up. Despite her shyness, Samantha was very kind and caring and deeply valued her relationships with others. She might take a little longer to warm up to people, but she was a loyal and supportive friend. However, she had always felt like she didn't quite fit in with her friend group. They were always joking around and teasing each other, but sometimes it felt like they were laughing at her instead of with her.
One day, Samantha decided to speak up about how she was feeling. She told her friends she didn't like it when they made fun of her. Samatha said it made her feel left out, but her friends just laughed it off and told her she was being too sensitive.
Feeling discouraged, Samantha started thinking that maybe she needed to change herself to fit in better. As time passed, she began to adopt a new style of clothing that closely resembled what her peers were wearing. In addition to that, she made attempts to mimic their behavior and mannerisms to fit in better with the group.
But even though she was playing the part, she still didn't feel like she belonged. And it was not just her friends who were judging her: Whenever she walked down the hall, she sensed the weight of other students' gazes, causing a prickling sensation.
One day, like usual, Samantha sat quietly in the bustling cafeteria, feeling isolated and disconnected from the world around her. As she gazed down at her food, lost in her thoughts, a warm voice broke through the silence: "Hi there, mind if I join you?"
Samantha looked up to see a girl with kind eyes and a friendly smile beside her. It was Judy, who was new to the school and didn't seem to have a lot of friends yet, either.
"Are you talking to me?" Samantha asked in astonishment.
"Yes. I see you sitting here by yourself and just wanted to come say hi," Judy said with a smile.
Samantha was surprised but grateful for the company. They started a conversation, and Samantha opened up to Judy and shared her innermost feelings.
"I feel like I'm constantly pretending to be someone I'm not," Samantha said, her voice shaking. "I'm so afraid of being rejected that I don't even know who I am anymore."
Judy listened attentively, nodding in understanding. "I can see how hard that must be for you, but you know what? You don't have to pretend with me. I accept you for who you are because I see it differently," Judy said. "It's important to remember that you should never feel like you have to change who you are just to fit in with a certain group of people. True friendship is based on acceptance and mutual respect, not on playing a role or pretending to be someone you're not. Don't compromise your values or beliefs only to make others like you. Instead, focus on building genuine connections with people who appreciate you for who you are."
Samantha was surprised by Judy's response. She had expected her to tell her to keep trying to fit in with her other friends. But instead, Judy was offering her something much more valuable: acceptance and understanding. After listening to Judy's words, Samantha realized that she was right. Being judged, rejected, and laughed at was not a game. Samantha felt like Judy could see her for who she was, which was refreshing.
"So just stick to being yourself and don't be afraid," Judy continued. "You don't have to hide yourself from me. Take my hand and show me the best version of who I am seeing."
Samantha felt a weight lifted off her shoulders. With Judy's encouragement, Samantha became more true to herself.
Over the next few weeks, Samantha started opening up more to Judy. She was always a faithful confidant to her friend, who entrusted her with her deepest feelings and apprehensions. Samantha would pour her heart out, and Judy would lend a compassionate ear, offering unwavering support and comfort whenever needed.
As Samantha began to feel more comfortable being herself around Judy, she realized she didn't need to change who she was to be accepted by others. She could be true to herself and still find people who loved and appreciated her. They liked her for who she was, not who she was trying to be.
It wasn't an easy journey, but with Judy's help, Samantha found the courage she had always needed. She gradually let go of her inhibitions and embraced her true self. In the process, she discovered that a true friend could accept and love her for exactly who she was, flaws and all.
Even though Samantha's old friends continued teasing her sometimes, she didn't let it get to her anymore. She had found a true friend in Judy, and that was all that mattered. Sometimes, whenever one of them felt insecure, they went to where they first met and sang their motivation song, "Hide Yourself" by Sebastien Skubala, to encourage each other.
"I see it different
You don't have to change yourself to fit in
Play the part to make them like you
I see it different
Being judged, rejected, laughed at is not a game
I see ya
So just stick to being yourself and don't be afraid
You don't have to hide yourself from me
Come take my hand show you what I see
Yeah you don't have to lie when you're with me
Don't change your mind and you could be free, so free, yeah."
Samantha had so much fun, and with Judy by her side, she had changed drastically in a good way. She had become an inspiration for the unwelcomed in her school. Samantha boosted their confidence and helped them show themselves. There were many stories, but the one Samantha remembered the most was the case of Molly, whom she met in the next school year.
Molly had always felt like she was in a rut. She had the same hairstyle, clothes, and routine for years and was tired of feeling like she wasn't truly living. One day, after scrolling through social media and seeing all the glamorous lives that her friends seemed to be living, Molly decided to make some changes. She went to the salon and chopped off her hair, opting for a pixie cut instead. Then, she went on a shopping spree and bought all new clothes distinct from her usual style.
At first, Molly felt like a brand new person. She loved how her hair looked, adoring how her new outfits made her feel. Molly received compliments everywhere and even started participating in social events more often. But as time passed, she then felt like something was missing. She realized that while changing her appearance was fun for a while, it did not change the fact that she was still the same person on the inside.
Molly started to wonder why she had been so desperate for a change in the first place. Was it because she wanted to fit in with her friends? Or was it because of feeling unhappy with her old self? She realized that changing her hair and clothes didn't fix the deeper issues that she was facing. It only made her feel more lost and confused, and that was when she met Samantha and Judy.
As Molly sat down with them, they started sharing their personal stories with her. Each one described their journey towards self-acceptance, offering Molly insights and encouragement along the way. Samantha also pointed out the similarity between her situation and Molly's. To help her calm her mind, they even shared with her their favorite motivational song, which was a powerful and uplifting anthem that never failed to soothe their souls:
"Change your hair, change your clothes
Change every little part of the pieces that make you you
To be someone that you can't be
And what is it all for?"
In the end, Molly learned that real change came from within. While it was okay to experiment with different styles and looks, it was crucial to remember that the pieces making you who you are could not be changed by simply altering your appearance. Thanks to Samantha and Judy, Molly came to appreciate her true self. She learned that accepting and loving yourself was the most essential change a person could make, and they had become best friends since then. The trio never failed to embrace themselves and was always willing to help others do the same because they believed none had to hide themselves.
