After about an hour, Martin packed up his guitar and suitcase as well as Zoe's and brought them down to the van.
The others came down too, Ryan had his head down low and was wearing a dark hoodie, disguising himself from the world.
Martin opened up the passenger door for Zoe. She slowly sat down and Martin put the seat back so that she could lie down slightly before he took his place in the driver's seat.
Nobody spoke; the girls knew that there was more to the picture, and the rest of them just felt incredible guilt.
Martin took out the map of France and Italy, working out the general route before turning on the GPS and programming in the destination. He looked over at the road. The sky was grey and the clouds were bursting as the rain splashed along the bonnet of the van.
Martin noticed his phone ringing, it was Bronagh Watson, so he cancelled the call, turning off his phone. He had no time for anyone. Especially not her.
Zoe gazed outside the window, watching the rain stream down her faint reflection.
Martin sighed, turning on the engine and looking in the rear-view mirror, seeing Ryan sitting on his own at the back, he had his head leant against the cold window and his eyes closed, but Martin knew that he wasn't asleep. Moving on, Martin saw Ollie and Jemma sitting beside each other, Jemma was listening to music on her earphones and Ollie had his head leaning against her shoulder as his eyes began to close. Martin gave a slight smile as Jemma wrapped her other arm around his shoulder as he slept.
Cloda and Lucy were still awake, looking out the drenched window and the ugly scenery.
Zoe had fallen asleep, Martin continued driving through the dark day and until he reached the border into Italy.
He wound down the windows at the toll, giving the money and all the passports before she checked them,
"Welcome to Italy." The woman said. Martin's eyes met hers, she looked like Emily, just like Emily. Her auburn hair was braided to one side and her face was slim and contoured, her eyes were wide and her eyelashes were defined and long.
"T-thank you." He mumbled, his eyes focused on hers.
"W-where are you travelling from?" She asked him, her accent was different, but he liked it.
"Swansea." He replied, "it's a school trip, believe it or not."
"Wow. How's it going?" She asked, smiling at him, making Martin feel overwhelmed with emotions.
"O-okay." He replied, smiling back at her before he saw Zoe begin to wake up on the seat beside him.
"Well, best of luck, Mr McCafferson." She said, reading out his passport before giving it back.
"Thank you." He replied, taking it back and touching her hand ever so slightly before putting them back in the glove compartment.
She opened the gate and he drove through, never seeing her again.
Martin drove through with a feeling of guilt, he thought he had figured it out. He thought that he was gonna be with Zoe. But he felt like Emily was always watching him, and that he was always trapped.
Martin saw his old wedding ring lying in the dust of one of the compartments on the door beside his sunglasses and his water bottle. Left to be forgotten. The once glowing gold garnish of the ring was merely a slight sheen in the dusty dark pocket. Those days were over.
Martin drove along the coast road, high up on a cliff, he saw the shore far below him. The scenery could have been beautiful if the rain would have stopped and the fog would have lifted and the crosses weren't scattered at the roadside.
Martin began to speed up, the barriers were breakable. The lights were low. The concrete was crumbling beneath the tires.
He breathed slowly; in and out. Grinding his teeth together and catching himself in the rear-view mirror, seeing his big sad eyes.
What has happened to me..
he imagined seeing Martha in the rear view mirror, smiling at him, her bulging blue eyes blooming out; he wanted her back. He wanted her back.
The image slowly faded to that horrible scarring one of Martha dead on the floor.
She wasn't even my child.. she wasn't mine to lose.
But the vision of her pale white skin and the blood.. her purple lips. Her sunken wide eyes with pupils so small. The dirty blonde hair tatted over her face, the remainder of tears in her eyes.
The cliffside seemed closer and closer as Martin kept driving faster, reaching faster than 70 miles per hour.
Ryan was the only one awake at the back, but he felt helpless and scared as Martin drove far too fast.
He looked around in panic, knowing he had no right to speak to Martin. He tried to see if anyone else was awake, reaching into the seat in front and poking Ollie's shoulder slightly, but he was in a deep sleep.
Martin continued to drive faster and faster, far above the speed limit.
I could end this. I could end this right now.
He peered over the edge at the looming drop. They would all most certainly die as a result, this could be over, he could be put out of his misery and go to sleep and in his mind be back there with Martha, his arm around her as she lay there, looking up at the stars. He didn't need anymore lovers, anyone to sleep with or to kiss, he just needed his daughter, he just needed her back.
Zoe's eyes opened from the speed she took a couple seconds to see what was happening before she looked over at Martin, his face was so still as he concentrated, yet he was a million miles away.
She cautiously placed her hand on his shoulder, making him jump in the shock, jolting the steering wheel to towards the edge of the cliff.
Zoe immediately grabbed the wheel and pulled it back making the wheels spin back onto the road.
"Jesus Martin!" She called, her eyes wide.
Martin pulled over and got out of the car. The rain soaked him almost immediately, he began to shiver, he didn't know if it was because he was cold or because he felt as if his insides wanted to burst out.
This was where most people would pose and take photographs of the beautiful scenery, but Martin felt himself edging towards the edge of the cliff.
He put his hands into his pockets, and in one he felt something hard. He pulled out a small broken frame with the small picture of Martha. It had been sitting on his desk until she died. Ryan had been the one to return it to him.
He stared into the photograph and took it out of the smashed frame, the image was only tiny, so he had to squint to look at it as the ink smudged in the rain. He turned the photo around to see the back of it, before he noticed that there was writing on it.
He managed to make out the faint scribbles of I lov yow daddy.
Martin took a look down below the cliff.
Zoe was looking outside the window at Martin in panic, when Martin took another step foreword towards the edge she immediately bolted outside, running over to him,
"Martin! Martin stop!" She screamed, grabbing hold of his shivering arms and pulling him back towards her.
"You promised you'd never leave me! You promised me that!"
Martin was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling, rising and falling, it was like he had lost the ability to speak.
Zoe looked around, "w-where are we?" She asked as the thunder began to roar.
"S-somewhere south of Pisa." He mumbled.
"And.. where are you?"
Martin looked down, the rain sliding down his cheeks and lips, dripping from his chin. "I don't know, Zoë."
"We're just a couple hours away from Rome, I'm driving." Said Zoe,
"No.. no you're not well enough-"
"Neither are you! You nearly killed us all!" She Yelled before Ryan came up behind them.
"I'm driving." He said.
Both of them looked at him,
"No." Said Martin.
"There are four amazing people in that van that deserve to be safe! I can drive! I'm insured! And I don't want to kill everyone! You two need a rest."
"You don't want to kill anyone?! Well you just did!" Yelled Martin before Zoe slapped him as hard as she could across the face.
"Are you determined to make everything worse?! I forgave him and I'm the one who lost the fucking baby!" Yelled Zoë,
"The baby was mine too!"
"No it wasn't!" She screamed, tears streaming down her eyes and mixing with the crashing rain.
Martin's face went cold still as she continued to yell, "A three day old baby wouldn't show up on a pregnancy test! It was Alex's baby. I was twelve weeks."
Martin glared at her in shock, his eyes were too painful to keep open as he took a shaking step backwards to the edge of the cliff.
