An hour had past and Martin hadn't returned to the hospital.
Zoe, Lucy, Cloda and Jemma were having lunch at one of the cafe's on the ground floor. Neither of them ate, Zoe had a coffee but was having trouble drinking it all.
"He's not picking up my calls." Said Zoe, putting down her phone after calling Martin 3 times.
"Driving?" Suggested Cloda.
"He'd have pulled over by now.. he said he'd be back either way in half an hour.." she sighed, "I'll give him another half hour."
She rubbed her puffy eyes and exhaled, a sinking feeling in her gut.
Zoe took another sip of her coffee before Jemma stood up suddenly,
"That's Ollie." She gasped, setting down her mug before running over to the other side of the huge hall where a trolley was being pushed towards a set of double doors. Cloda, Lucy and Zoe turned around, recognising the corpse on the trolley immediately as Ollie.
"Oh my god.." Zoe breathed, standing absolutely still while the other girls ran after Jemma.
Zoe picked up her phone and rang Martin again, leaving a voicemail.
"Martin... oh god Martin... what've you done..?" She whimpered, hanging up and walking over to the doors where the girls had followed Ollie and the porters.
Martin was charging down the motorways at 80mph, not caring about speed limits or red lights. He was terrified. But he was done. He was ready to die now, more than he had ever been before. He knew that there was no turning back now that he had fled the scene of a fatal accident. Now that he had killed a boy he had sworn to protect with his life.
Tears hadn't stopped flowing from Martin's eyes. He had become so lightheaded from yelling at himself, but that didn't stop him from driving as fast as was physically possible.
By mid day Martin had driven down to the south of England and had paid his ticket to go through the eurotunnel into France, having a brief glance at the piano in the middle of the hall; the place where he and Zoe had all at once fallen in love and nearly kissed. Now he'd never see her again.
Martin felt exhausted from crying so much, when he reached the tunnel he walked outside and began to kick his car, feeling so sick and devastated.
He checked his phone seeing ten missed calls from Zoe. Gasping, Martin listened to the short voicemail of "Martin.. oh god Martin.. what've you done...?"
He knew that the news about what had happened to Ollie was out, there was only a matter of time before the police found out it was Martin, and then he would spend the rest of his life in prison.
As soon as he was out of the tunnel, Martin continued to speed along the roads of France, covering his mouth from shrieking as he heard his phone ring over and over again, knowing how he had failed Zoë. That's what hurt the most; leaving her.
A voice mail began to play after Martin had been on the road for hours in France.
"Hey.. Hey Martin.." it was Zoe's voice, and he treasured the audacity. "I- I'm not going to pretend I don't know what you've done.. but- but I'm going to pretend that you don't.. about three hours ago Ollie committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving car. The driver panicked and drove away. They saw cctv footage, they know it wasn't the driver's fault, however, as he fled the scene of an accident they are searching for him. And.." she chocked, "-and they're gonna find him, Martin."
Martin felt the warm tears streaming down his cheeks and over his opened lips.
"Martin... god Martin... I love you. I love you more than anything... but where are you? Come home and we can sort this out together.. please."
Martin screamed in the agonising heart break, but he continued to drive in the opposite direction to home. The police would be able to track his records and would find that he was in France.
He was over. Him and Zoe were over. He'd never see the girl he'd grown to love so much ever again.
Nobody was able to control themselves as they watched the two still bodies that used to belong to Ryan and Ollie lie beside each other, white as snowdrops, still and sound.
The four girls stood transfixed at the sight that would have been a hilarious joke this time last week. Two out of the five were dead.
Ollie and Ryan; absolutely best friends, were lying still on a thin hospital bed, their expressions diminished and their eyes shut.
"I-I don't want to make any wrong assumptions but.." Cloda took a deep breath, looking to Zoë who simply couldn't concentrate.
"It was Martin... that's the only reasonable explanation for all of this.. he was driving the car." She uttered, her eyes focused on Ollie's body.
"They said it was suicide." Said Lucy softly, not wanting to add to Jemma's devastation, but it only built it.
"I knew him- I knew him and he was not at that stage!" She argued, tears drenching her eyes.
Zoe looked down, shaking her head, "I.. I think he was." She replied, "He.. he rang up on Friday evening and.. and Martin collected him by the pier.. he was covered in blood- his parents had attacked him.. um.. he stayed the night, at least, part of it. We got up at 6am and he was gone."
Zoe looked down at Ollie's body, unable to correlate between it and the boy she was taking about.
He remembered how distraught Martin was when he saw that Ollie had left during the night.
"If he goes I go.."
Zoe went into a state of panic before her phone rang, everyone shrieked, before she saw that it was Lottie.
"Fuck off, Lottie!" She cried, not answering the call before covering her mouth with her shaking hands and leaning against the wall, "fuck.." she breathed, "Martin's gonna kill himself.. god.. he might be dead already.."
Cloda placed one hand on her shoulder, "look- we know that Martin is innocent."
"He loved Ollie like a son, he wouldn't he w-" Zoe couldn't stop herself from crying now, she remembered the first time she cried on the school trip in France when Martin had told her about Martha and Ryan had been the one to comfort her.
"This is too many people in too little time..." she gasped, looking out the window, her head in her hands, "none of those three boys deserve t-to die and- and- fuck! This can't be real..."
All Zoe wanted was for Martin to burst through the door, say that he was late because of the traffic, then hold her.. just hold her and comfort her. But she knew, deep inside, that he'd never hold her again.
