chapter 5
I held my breath as I carefully maneuvered my car into the gravel parking lot and studied the building where the boys were supposedly waiting for me inside. I turned off my car and leaned back in my seat, staring at the building, as if searching for a reason to hightail it out of there. It look unassuming and completely safe, though a bit creepy, due to the fact that it resembled an abandoned church, which I assumed, in a way, it was.
I chewed on my bottom lip and sat up slightly, slipping my phone from back pocket and opening up my messaging app. I clicked on the group chat that was for the boys and I. The group chat had been rather active the night before, and surprisingly even during school today, the boys apparently having a lot of thoughts about us hanging out today. My lips quirked up at the last texts that had been sent.
Gabriel: Who the fuck is paying for pizza this time?
Me: I can.
Nathan: How sweet of you, but no. Vic's got it.
Me: You're aware I'm rich too, right?
Luke: Cupcake, shhh, just let us be gentlemen, okay?
I took a deep breath before sending them off a text, letting them know that I had arrived and just wanted to make sure that I was in the right place and it would be great if someone could come out and confirm I was at the right place. After I sent the text I dropped my phone into my lap and zoned out, twirling my key chain ring around my finger mindlessly.
A tap at my window startled me enough to screech and drop my keys. My heart beat raced, but then gradually began to slow when I saw who was staring at me through the window. Victor raised his eyebrows at me, a kind smile on his face. My face flushed bright red and I unlocked the door, pushing it open.
"Hey," I muttered, smoothing down my hair and leaning down to retrieve my keys off the floor of my car.
"Hey yourself," he said, still smiling. I was grateful he didn't make a comment on how skittish I was and made a mental note to hug him for it later. "Has North seen your car yet? I think he might love it."
"Everyone loves my car," I deadpanned, climbing out of my car, wearing a small smile. I tucked my keys and phone into my pockets then gestured to Victor that we should head inside. "Lead the way."
We walked across the gravel and into the old church in complete silence. The inside of the building was chaos and I couldn't help but stand back and just gape. The boys were spread out, making an abundant amount of noise while they worked. Somewhere, someone was playing music but it was mostly drowned out by the boys' voices and laughter. I caught sight of Gabriel and Luke, who both had paint on their clothes and faces. Giggles bubbled up inside and I leaned against the wall, only to squeal.
"Wet! That's wet! Wet paint!"
Victor who had still been standing beside me burst into laughter as I began to turn in circles like a dog trying to catch it's tail. I was trying to see the damage the paint had done to my shirt, but it was apparent that I couldn't accomplish it. Giggles continued to pour out of me, even if I did just ruin my shirt.
"You've been here all of three minutes," Victor said, calming down from his laughter. "How did you manage that?"
Before I could answer, I was scooped up into a tight hug, the scent of the ocean washing over me. I let out yet another squeal and tried to squirm out of Silas' grip, the only thought on my mind being that I didn't want to get any paint on him. I looked over at Victor, silently pleading with him to help me, but he just shrugged, amusement flickering in his fire eyes.
I sighed and pressed my face into Silas' chest to hide my smile. "Silas," I said softly. "You're getting paint on yourself."
He released me to send me a confused look, and I gently gripped his hands and lifted his arms so he could see the paint that now coated them. He looked between me and his arms a few times, then promptly burst into laughter. A blush colored my cheeks, and I looked over at Victor, who must have noted my embarrassment.
"Hey everyone!" He called out, slinging an arm around my shoulders. I gritted my teeth to keep from wincing away, even if I had come to terms with the fact that the boys were very touchy feely. "Sang is here!"
Everyone turned to greet me, their smiles wide and beaming. I felt a smile of my own form, glad that I could bring smiles to their faces. I hadn't had many friends in my life, and I had to admit that it felt nice to finally have some. I had spent a lot of time with my siblings and their friends, but it didn't exactly count. There was also a lot of people I had to be friendly with to please my parents, and that wasn't exactly that great either.
"Hi!" I chirped, then giggled when I caught sight of Silas' arms covered in paint once again. "You should probably rinse that off or something."
Kota's eyebrows shot up as he observed the situation, looking between Silas and I. "May I ask what happened?"
I pointed to the wall that was wet with paint then turned to show him my back that was also now covered in wet paint. Laughter erupted from behind me, and a blush painted my cheeks. My eyes met Victor's and he gave me a sympathetic look, shrugging his shoulders. I turned to face the boys again, and started slightly, realizing that Mr. Blackbourne and Dr. Green were there as well. I pressed my lips together, thinking it better not to ask any questions.
They looked to be young anyways, so it could be quite plausible that they were all friends. I wasn't quite sure how I felt about it yet, though.
"My house is right down the road," Nathan said, shooting me a smile. "I'll go get you a shirt you can wear. Then I'll send Luke back to throw your's in the wash. Since we're coming to my house afterwards, you can collect it then. Sound good?"
I nodded, sending him a thankful smile. He ruffled my hair as he walked past, and I scrunched up my nose, trying to decide if I liked his friendly touch or not. I watched Nathan walk out, then turned back to the boys, bouncing on my toes slightly from excitement. Gabriel came to my side and rested a hand on my head, as if to calm me, but it didn't work.
"Tell me what I can to do help," I said, directing the statement to everyone in the room. I didn't exactly care who the order came from; I was happy and ready to help.
North smirked as he handed me a paint brush and nudged a can of paint my way with his foot. "Since you're covered in paint, you might as well help Gabriel, Luke, and I."
The next two hours were spent painting, with laughter and music mixed in. As much as I wanted to talk to the boys and find out more about them, the atmosphere was too light to weigh down with heavy questions, so I preferred asking random and maybe even stupid questions. Silas also liked to make jokes that had me laughing harder than I probably should have considering the jokes weren't really all that good. Gabriel and Luke occasionally pulled me away from working to dance with me, only to get yelled at by North or reprimanded by Kota moments later. At one point, I worked alongside Dr. Green, and he cheerfully told me that unless we were on school grounds, he expected me to call him Sean.
When the pizza arrived, we washed up then seated ourselves on the plastic covering on the ground. At first I was shocked by the fact that they had ordered six large pizzas, but then as we began to eat, I understood why. The boys could really pack away some food, while I could only manage two pieces before I was full. The boys chattered as they ate, and I sat and listened, taking joy out of hearing stories about each of them.
At some point, I sprawled out on my back, tired from the work I had done, and partially exhausted from socializing so much. It used to baffle me that the mere action of talking could drain so much energy out of me, but one trip to the doctor's and it was quite clear to understand. After a few minutes, a foot nudged my own, and I dragged my eyes over to meet Luke's.
"Tired, huh?" He inquired, and I nodded slowly.
My head was shifted and I let out soft incomprehensible protests, but then sighed in content when my head was rested in someone's lap. I didn't know whose it was, but it made a good pillow and that was all that really mattered. I must have drifted for awhile, because when I opened my eyes again, the boys were cleaning up their mess from today and talking softly. I blinked a few times, then sat up and rubbed at my eyes.
"Morning, sleeping beauty," Nathan teased me as he walked past me. A blush colored my cheeks and I pulled myself to my feet, attempting to wake myself up enough to help. "Are you ready to head to my house? The boys have this under control."
My brows furrowed together. "Are you sure? I mean, I'm sure they wouldn't mind the help..."
Nathan barked out a laugh and draped an arm around my shoulders. "They'll be just fine, Peanut. Now let's get going to my house. Kota will come in looking for us if we take any longer. I told him I would come get you while he waited outside."
I racked my brain for any protest I could possibly make, but when none surfaced, I nodded. A smile graced his face, and together, him and I walked outside to greet Kota. Kota was standing off to the side of the building, a frown on his face as he studied something on his phone. The door banged shut, and he looked up, his face transforming into a smile when he saw us. I gave a playful wave and his eyes sparkled as he gave me a playful wave back.
He looked over my shoulder at Nathan and asked, "Are we ready to walk to your house then?"
Nathan must have given some form of consent because Kota turned and lead the way. We walked down a fairly quiet street, sticking to the side of the road just in case any cars came by. I watched my feet, avoiding cracks in the asphalt with a small smile on my lips. The boys walked beside me, keeping me on the inside, nearest to the grass, most likely to keep me the farthest away from the cars. Their caring and thoughtful personalities had my heart warming.
When I heard the boy's footsteps stopped, I halted and looked up, studying the house that we had stopped before. It was a single story home, red brick, and looked nice enough from the outside, and I found myself wondering if it looked that nice on the inside as well. Nathan unlocked the door for us, then stood aside so we could walk in. Immediately, my eyes began to scan the area, and it was pleased to see that the inside was just as nice as the outside.
"I like it," I told Nathan, causing him to beam at me and a blush to form on my cheeks.
"I'm going to go put your shirt in the dryer," he told me. "Make yourself at home, the boys should be here soon."
I nodded, and watched as he disappeared down a hallway. I looked at Kota, prepared to ask him what we were going to do, but he had his phone glued to his ear and was making his way into the kitchen, sending me an apologetic look. I gnawed on my bottom lip, feeling a familiar black hole begin to grow in my chest now that I was left alone. I took a deep breath, reminding myself that they had invited me to be with them and that I had nothing to worry about.
Keeping those kinds of positive thoughts in mind, I sank down onto one of the leather couches and pulled my feet up by me. With a lack of anything else better to do, I pulled out my phone and checked my texts. There was none, unsurprisingly. The only people who ever really texted me was my family, and they were all busy from what I knew. My disappearance would go unnoticed by them, which was relieving, I didn't need any questions on where I had been.
I let out a small huff and opened up an app that I rarely ever used, but Marie insisted I had. I didn't use it often, but occasionally if I had nothing better to do, I would go on Snapchat and check up on what my preppy acquaintances were up to. I scrolled through, looking at endless photos and videos of them getting drunk or going shopping. The eye roll that ensued was inevitable.
"What are you looking at?"
I cried out, and pressed a hand over my chest, shooting a glare at the Taylor brothers who were both looking over my shoulder at my phone. I did not handle people sneaking up on me very well. Luke managed a sheepish look, while North continued to stare at me, waiting for an answer to his question. I let out an exasperated sigh, and motioned for North to come sit beside me.
He took a seat beside me and looked over my shoulder once again, studying my phone screen, that was left on one of my old friend's Snapchat story's. I could almost laugh at the confused expression on North's face, but somehow, I managed to keep a blank face.
"This," I said. "Is Snapchat. Have you used it before?"
He shook his head, and gave me a small glare that told me I should have known better than to ask. He didn't exactly come off as the type to use it, but I thought it better to ask than to just assume.
"Well," I leaned back, trying to decide what the best way to describe it would be. "You can send pictures and videos to your friends and message them as well. There also such things as Snapchat story's where you can add photos or videos to share with people, so everyone you have on Snapchat can see it and not just one individual. Make sense?"
His eyes narrowed slightly. "Why don't they just text each other?"
I couldn't contain my laughter this time. I couldn't blame him, really, Snapchat was an odd app but a lot of people found it enjoyable. I thought it was easier to just text people, like North did, but as long as people loved the app, it was going to remain around.
"Forget about it." I tucked my phone back into my pocket, a small smile playing on my face. "Maybe another time I'll teach you."
"Wait!" Luke exclaimed, his melted chocolate eyes growing wide with excitement. "If I had Snapchat I could get pictures of you all the time?"
North looked at me, as if waiting for me to confirm Luke's inquiry. I pressed a hand to my mouth, giggles bubbling out of my mouth. I couldn't believe that the two had taken such an interest in Snapchat, but it was rather amusing, and I was more than happy to soothe their curiosities.
"I suppose," I replied, leaning back against the couch, prepared to pull my phone out again in case they wanted to learn more. "But you already see me everyday at school. I don't know why you would want to see more of my face. And if you asked, I would send you pictures over text. Though, I suppose Snapchat has the cute filters..."
"Filters?" North and Luke chorused together, Luke looking even more excited than before while North looked as if he was trying to figure out the equation to cure cancer.
I decided it was merely best to show them. I yanked my phone out and opened Snapchat back up. Before North could protest, I focused the camera on him, chose the filter, and snapped the picture. I promptly burst into a fit of giggles at the sight on my screen, and turned the phone to show the boys.
"North!" Luke exclaimed, practically bouncing in his seat at this point. "You're a puppy!"
It was hard to breathe with all the laughter, but somehow I managed to get out, "Luke, would you like to be a puppy too?"
An exuberant nod was all the answer I needed, and thus started the rest of the evening that consisted of pleasing not only Luke, but nearly all of the guys by taking photos of them with miscellaneous filters. At some point, the phone was taken from my hands, and the boys began to take photos of all of us.
When I scrolled through them all that night while in bed, a small smile stretched across my face at the sight of all of them. There was one of me dancing with Luke, Gabriel, and Nathan. The next photo was of me nearly falling over, gripping onto Nathan with wide eyes. The one after that was of me trying on Kota's glasses, and practically going crossed eyed. I marveled at the fact that they had even captured me fixing Mr. Blackbourne's tie for him.
The photos I had taken of the boys were just as wonderful, in my opinion. I think I had a photo of each with the dog filter, but the ones that were unplanned were the absolute best. Gabriel sitting on Luke while Luke had his head back, laughing. The boys playing video games, looks of sheer concentration on their face. Silas stretching as he stood. Sean trying to eat pie while North lectured him.
Each photo caused my smile to grow bigger, and even though it was late and there was a good amount of photos, I took the time to send all of them to the group chat. My eyelids were heavy, and I needed sleep badly, but I kept my eyes opened and trained on my glowing screen, waiting for each of them to reply.
Nathan: These are great, thank you for them, Peanut. I hope you had fun today.
Kota: I don't recommend putting my glasses on ever again (even if you do look cute in them). Thank you for the pictures, Sang.
Luke: You're going to have to teach me more about Snapchat the next time we get together ;p
North: I still think Snapchat is dumb, but I had fun today, Sang Baby. You should probably get some sleep now.
Silas: I didn't even notice half of these photos being taken, but North is right. Sweet dreams, Aggele Mou.
Gabriel: I had so much fucking fun today, I hope you did too. Now we have a bunch of pictures to remember it by. Now go to bed and sleep before North has a fucking aneurysm. Goodnight, Trouble.
Victor: Thank you for the pictures and the good time today, Princess. I hope you sleep well, and I'll see you tomorrow.
As I drifted off, my phone resting against my chest, I couldn't help the smile on my face or the happiness that had began to fill the black hole in my chest.
a/n: So here is Chapter 5, everyone. I hope you guys enjoyed the little bit about Snapchat, because I certainly enjoyed writing it. Thank you for reading, and I love you all.
