Release Them

Breath fog cast into the frigid air of the present winter night, flakes of frost that looked like ash drifting to a descent from the dark sky. The faint illusions of light danced within the wind gusts that made blue and dull grey banners flap against their will. The only noises to be heard were the whispers of the oncoming breezes and the heavy breath of a figure walking down the pathway between houses of diverse sizes and appearances.

His hands rested in his jacket pockets, safe from the cold, despite the slight shivers he had every once in awhile. His hair was pulled back into a small and messy ponytail- messy considering it was last minute and he recently woke up. His warm brown eyes followed his steps towards a decent sized house for one person to live in. However, like before, there was a chained wire fence surrounding the habitable place, locked to the outsiders like himself. But the fence wasn't his main concern at the moment. It was what was behind the fence.

Not too far behind the fence, to his left, stood an old horse stable with no roof to shelter the two horses from the gliding ice crystals. It wasn't a guess there were two horses inside, seeing as how he was startled when they started neighing and stomping their hooves on the ground while he ran by earlier and how they were again doing the same now.

He took his hands out of his pockets and rested them on the fence, which felt like ice against his bare fingers. He sighed, his warm breath meeting with the cold air, turning it to a visible fog that quickly faded away. A second glance at the stable was all he needed for his thoughts to wander on if he should go along with this and if he did, how it would turn out in the end. It would probably get him in trouble and raise more suspicions towards him but... he couldn't ignore this.

Before he could make any final decisions, his attention was drawn away by a sudden light accompanied by the sound of footsteps coming his way. His eyesight already drawn to that direction, he pivoted his body, squinting to see the figure coming towards him. From his perspective, he spotted a sheathed sword at this person's side and dark shoes. In case this wasn't the figure's every night walk, he went to reach for the hilt of his sword, only to find nothing. He mentally slapped himself for forgetting his own defense mechanism.

Yet when the figure lowered the flashlight, he relaxed a bit, realizing it was just one of his friends. But that caused him to question the man. "Ty, did you follow me here?"

'Ty' sighed, staying silent for a moment. "No."

"Ty." He took a step forward, his friend refusing to make eye contact. "Why are you here?"

He hesitated, starting with, "I'm here to..." He stopped, shaking his head and closing his eyes. "Release them."

He instantly froze, staring at Ty in surprise. Howbeit, it swiftly shifted into irritation, him scoffing. "You have- Ty, I thought I was going crazy!"

"Look, Jerome, Mitch and I walked past here today and that's when I first noticed it."

"Was that before or after you said my head was floating in the clouds?" He crossed his arms, giving him a hard glare.

"Adam-"

"Why would you lie to me about this?" Adam exclaimed as the wind blew a sharp gust, cutting him off.

Ty stomped up to him in annoyance. Was it not obvious to Adam? "Maybe because I don't want to end up in a prison cell or considered insane! I don't have time to deal with this!"

Adam turned around with a sigh, shaking his head in disbelief before glancing back at Ty. "You think I'm off any better?"

Ty didn't respond to that. He instead closed his eyes, allowing the whistle of the wind to make itself apparent. Then he opened them to meet Adam's.

He was going to regret this later.

Heavily exhaling, he walked over to fence, specifically to the locked gate, unsheathing his sword. He first took a glimpse at the stable. Those horses wanted to be set free, it was clear. Then he looked to the gloomy house. He hoped the owner wouldn't notice or be too mad... Lastly, he directed his gaze to Adam, unsureness in his eyes as well as in his own. He couldn't just ignore this. He had to release them.

"Let's just hope we're doing this for a good cause."

Suddenly, he started hacking at the lock, hitting it over and over again with the sword until the lock finally gave in, falling to the cold ground. In a breath, Adam pushed open the gate. They both hesitated, meeting each other's eyes. However, it wasn't even a minute before they sauntered through the gate and to the stable. Without hesitation, they easily opened the half doors, the horses' cry for freedom instantly coming to a halt. In fact, it's like they froze on the spot, just staring at Adam and Ty. No movement whatsoever. But after a few more seconds, they ran out of the stable, into the world around them.

"That was peculiar," Adam spoke, gazing out at the path the horses took.

"No kidding."

Adam glanced at Ty. "Now what do we do?"
