Chapter 1: Memento Mori

Probably should establish now... I don't own Until Dawn or the Youtubers mentioned... That would be really creepy.... XD

~~~
Ten hours Until Dawn...
"Today is the one year anniversary of the dreadful tragedy that took place on Mount Solace."
The silver bus snaked along the old winding road that lead up the mountainside as the sun began to set on the horizon.
"Sheriff Ashley Marie who was in charge of the investigation..."
"Thanks for having me Jordan..."
Inside the bus was only one passenger who sat near the back, his light green eyes watching the horizon. He had a large pair of black and green headphones on as he listened to the radio on his phone, which he held tightly in his hands.
"... Listens to an update on Seto Levis and Brice Solace. The two boys who are still missing..."
"One year ago tonight, the teens left the safety of Brice's parents lodge and headed out into the snow storm...
The radio cut out for a minute as the bus traveled higher up the mountain and further away from reception, but it kept playing.
"...Foul play?"
"Not officially, no. There is one individual we're considering as a person of interest, but his whereabouts are currently unknown. He has an interesting history with the Solace family... He'd warned them against pursuing their construction project and claimed the land was sacred to his forefathers."
The bus began to drive down the path away from the slopes and through the trees, leaving the passenger, Ty Ellies, to sigh and turn away from the window and look down at his phone, still listening to the podcast.
"You know... There's still the old Sanatorium on the mountain... Could he be hiding there?"
"My officers did search the grounds but.. The boys themselves couldn't have made it that far... Not in that weather..."
"Something about that mountain seems to breathe tragic events..."
"More than you know Jordan..."
"Thank you for joining us Ashley... And our thoughts are with those knew the kids and we wish you well on this tragic night..."
Ty sighed as the podcast began to continue on other subjects that he honestly didn't care about, so he opened his phone and turned off the podcast, flicking to his messages as he tried to keep his mind occupied.
He found one message from Ian that was a video and he pressed play on it, turning the screen sideways to get a better view.
The video showed Ian standing in the middle of the foyer at the ski lodge, smiling at the camera.
"Hey Guys. Uh...  It's me... I got all the confirmations and it's beyond awesome to have us all coming back to the annual Minewood Winter Getaway!" Ian said happily.
After a small moment of silence, Ian finally said with a sigh "Ok... I guess I should address the Uh...  Thing on everyone's minds... I know it's gonna be weird coming back... I know some of us haven't spoken since last year... I know that the team broke up over it so it's gonna be awkward and sad coming back..." He said, looking down.
"But... It means a lot to me that we're all coming back... And I have a feeling that it's what Brice and Seto would have wanted us to be together through this time, thinking of them... I think we really need to spend time with each other and make amends... You know... Just make some good memories that we won't ever forget..."
Ian looked at the camera and gave a small smile "Okay, so let's party till the sun rises and make this a trip we'll never forget."
Ty gave a sad smile at the message and turned his phone off.
He then jolted slightly as the bus came to a sudden stop and the driver called out "Minewood Pines..."
Ty nodded and stood up, grabbing his luggage and hopping off the bus after saying thanks to the driver. As soon he stepped off the bus, the doors closed and the bus turned, driving back the way it had come.
Ty watched it go for a minute before taking a deep breath and looking up at the sign that hung above the old wooden entrance, written in fine black writing. Minewood Pines...
'No turning back now...'
Ty sighed as he held his luggage, which was just a simple neon green backpack, and set off through the gate and down the path.
The teen was dressed differently to what he usually did due to the cold weather. While he did wear the same pants and shoes, instead of a short sleeved t-shirt, he wore a long sleeved white v neck and a black and green jacket. While no more music played through his headphones, he kept them on out of habit.
He paused for a minute, looking around, feeling as if someone was watching him. "Hello?" He called out with a frown. "Someone there?"
When no one answered, he shrugged it off and kept walking. It was cold, no one would be stupid enough to be outside unless they had to be.
As he walked, he turned the corner and slowed at the sight of a large iron wrought gate held up by two large, cracked stone walls.
Ty frowned when he noticed a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the gate, walking over to it and taking it off the gate, reading it.
'The gate's broken. Climb over! Jason.'
Ty groaned and threw the note to the ground "Well that's just great..." He muttered to himself, looking around to notice the stone wall to the left of the gate was crumbling and full of footholds.
He sighed and walked over to the wall, placing his hands on the jutted out stones and proceeded to climb the wall.
He almost fell at one point when he decided to leap up the rest of the way and lost his footing, but he otherwise made it to the top safely.
He pulled his body up and over the wall, dropping into a pile of snow on the other side.
He stood up and brushed the snow off his jeans and kept walking, his gaze turning to look at the nature around him, a squirrel racing across the pathway, a pair of crows in a tree. It seemed peaceful.
Soon, the pathway opened up, the forrest pulling back to reveal a clearing on the mountainside, where he had a clear view of the forest covered mountain range. While the sun had disappeared, the range was very calming and beautiful.
The cable car station lay near the edge, the lines spamming across to the other side where he could just see the cable car slowly making its way down towards them.
He turned and frowned when he noticed one of those large maps that were hung up in tourist areas to help people find there way. Dark red graffiti was sprayed across the map revealing a message.
'The past is beyond our control!'
"Who would do graffiti all the way up hear?" He asked out loud as he stepped away from it, turning to head towards the cable car station, but not before looking at it one last time.
He went under the roof of the station and looked at the small wooden bench sitting just under it, noticing a light blue backpack sat on the bench.
He smiled as he recognised it to be Jason's backpack. "Well your bags here... So where are you?" He muttered, looking around "Jason? You here?"
When no one answered, a soft buzzing sound brought Ty's attention back to the bag. "Well what do we have here?" He said, noticing Jason's phone poking out of one of the pockets, lighting up a the sound of a new message.
Hesitating for a moment, he reached out and took the phone out, looking at the screen and reading the words 'Message from Ian'.
Before Ty could read anymore, he heard a voice say behind him "Snooping around? I thought you were better than that..."
At the sudden voice, Ty yelped and jumped back as he turned, sighing with relief when he realised it was only Jason. "Don't scare me like that!"
The spaceman was dressed in his usual attire, a large but flexible light blue and grey spacesuit with a light blue helmet and orange visor.
Jason pulled the visor up and smirked "So... Do you want to explain why you're on my phone?"
Ty smiled and tossed the phone to him "It was buzzing. I didn't even see the message if it makes you feel any better."
Jason rolled his eyes as he caught the phone and opened it up, reading the message. "Not anything interesting... Just Ian reminding me to lock up..."
"Reminding you?" Ty asked, raising an eyebrow but still smiling.
"Yeah. He wants me to lock the cable car after we come up. Apparently it's one of Mr Solace's conditions."
Ty opened his mouth to reply but Jason soon cut him off "I gotta show you something..."
"What?" Ty asked.
Jason smiled as he flicked his visor down "It's a surprise. It'll blow your mind." he said, grabbing his backpack and walking out and around the cable car station to reveal a small path "Follow me my little snooper."
Ty smirked and rolled his eyes, following his friend quickly to catch up to him.
Around the side of the station, a small notice hung on the metal wall.
While Jason ignored it, Ty walked up to it and read the words, calling out to Jason "Hey, look at this..."
'WANTED
July 1998'
"Well then..." Jason said after reading it. "You think we'll get a visit from America's Most Wanted?" He asked with a smile, not really taking the notice seriously.
"Well someone thinks so if they bothered to put signs up here about it..." Ty said, still looking at it.
"Hey no worries Ty... This place has been abandoned most of the year... Actually, I think it has been a full year... We were the last people here..." Jason said, thinking about the last part before continuing on his way.
"You're not very reassuring, you know that?" Ty said after him, turning away from the poster and following.
Soon it came out to reveal an old fenced off area around a large tree, old barrels lay around it with cans on top along with sandbags with targets on them hanging from the tree. On a bench beside the fence lay a large shotgun.
A shooting range.
"Ta Dah." Jason said, gesturing towards the range.
"What the hell is a shooting range doing at the base of a ski lodge?" Ty asked, picking up the gun and looking at it.
Jason too the gun off him and smiled, "Have you ever meet Brice's dad?" He asked with a laugh, readying the gun to aim at the range. "He loves this stuff."
"You're not actually gonna try and shoot with that thing are you?" Ty asked, raising an eyebrow at his friends.
To answer his question, Jason smirked and fired at one of the sandbags, hitting in in the bullseye. He smiled, turned and fired at one of the tin cans sitting on the snow, hitting it away. He then proceeded to hit a second sandbag and a glass bottle.
"Wow... " Ty said with a smirk.
Jason nodded and did a small, rather silly little dance with the gun "That's right. I'm a badass!"
Ty rolled his eyes "You did good... But I'm willing to bet that was just beginners luck..."
"Nope... I disagree..." Jason said, taking aim again.
He noticed a squirrel had made it way onto the range and had proceeded to eat some nuts lying on one of the barrels but chose to ignore it, shooting the sandbag again and landing a direct hit, doing the same with two other sandbags and another tin can.
"Ok, ok... Maybe you can shoot..." Ty said with a smile.
Jason smirked "To right I can!"
Ty turned and noticed that the cable car was almost at the station. " Come on Jason. You can play sharp shooter some other time."
Jason nodded and set the gun down, following him back towards the front of the station. "It's gonna be weird coming back here, isn't it?" He muttered.
"Yeah, it feels like it all came flooding back the minute I got here..." Ty replied.
He tried the door but frowned when it was locked "What?"
Jason calmly pulled out a key and fit it into the lock, opening the door "I told you. Ian said to keep it locked. He says that apparently, Brice's dad found people sleeping inside one time so he said to keep it locked at all times."
"Creepy..." Ty muttered, walking inside.
Jason nodded and locked the door after them. "I know..."
As they walked into the station, they noticed that the car was still pretty far out. Probably about halfway across. Ty sighed "Damn, I thought the car was closer..."
Jason shrugged "Guess we should look around..." He said, turning and walking into the small, empty control room just next to them.
He stopped and looked at the large black and white poster on the wall of the control room. It showed a picture if what looked like a hotel, with words written in fine black letters on the bottom 'Minewood Pines Hotel and Sanatorium.'
"Hey, did you know there's a hotel and sanatorium on the mountain?" Jason asked, calling out to Ty.
Ty looked at him and said "I knew about the sanatorium, but not the hotel... What even is a sanatorium?" He asked.
"Uh... I think it's a hospital for... metal case people..."
"So an insane asylum?" Ty asked.
"That's one way of putting it..." Jason said, walking away from the poster.
"Great... Because that's not creepy at all..." Ty muttered sarcastically, turning back to watch the cable car as it seemed to crawl across the line.
Jason continued to walk around the control room and soon walked into the corner at the sight of a small tv, cycling though live feeds of what he guess we're video cameras from the lodge and around the area.
First he saw what looked like a bathroom, then down then along a pathway, then a basement, then at the entrance where he frowned, seeing a blur rush across the screen looking like a person. But before Jason could get a closer view, the feed changed again.
"Weird..." Jason said turning away from the cameras and going back towards Ty.
"Finally!" Ty said with a sigh as the cable car came into the station, opening up, quickly walking in and sitting on one of the seats.
Jason smiled and walked in after him, sitting next to him as the doors began to close.
The twos boys jolted forward slightly as the cable car lunged back, starting the journey back towards the ski lodge.
"I hope this was the right thing to do... Coming back and all on the anniversary..." Ty said, looking out the window.
Jason shrugged "It should be, I mean it'll be good to see everyone again..."
Ty smiled "I guess, I mean Ian seemed really eager to do this..."
Jason chuckled "That's an understatement, I hear he had to beg Brice's parents to let us do this..."
Ty smirked "I would have payed to have watched that go down."
Jason smiled and nodded "Me too."
The rest of the trip was continued in relative silence, the cable car steadily easing up the mountain towards a trip they will never forget.
----------
At the other end of the cable car, just by the station, Tyler sat on a wooden bench, scrolling through his phone and adjusting his glasses every so often.
Tyler was wearing his usual attire. He wore a white t-shirt, and a flannel red and grey checkered shirt on top, blue jeans and grey runners. The on,y few difference was that the sleeves of his flannel shirt were rolled down and he wore a grey parka as well.
He smiled as he saw the cable car finally reach the station. So he stood up and began to walk over to the door thinking 'More people... Time to meet and greet...'
He walked out towards the door to the station, taking his time. Which is why he yelped and jumped back when he saw two bodies slam themselves from the other side.
"Tyler! Over here!" Jason called out from the other side of the glass.
"The doors lock from the outside, can you let us out?" Ty asked, pressing his hands on the glass top of the door.
Tyler rolled his eyes and pulled out a key, unlocking the door and opening it. "That's why I'm here..." He said.
Jason and Ty smiled as they stepped outside. "Free at last!" Jason said with a laugh "Ten more minutes and I would've broken down the door."
Tyler smirked "Yeah, because breaking down a door definitely sends a good message." He said sarcastically.
Ty didn't bother to reply. He was too busy looking out over the view "Wow... This view is incredible... It looks like we're on top of the world..."
"So why are you out here Tyler? I'd think that you'd be up at the lodge by now..." Jason said, looking at him.
Tyler shrugged "I'm helping Ian out... He can't stay here waiting for people to show up just to unlock the door. So I'm helping him out."
"You were just the first person here besides Ian. Weren't you?" Ty said, smirking at him.
Tyler sighed and nodded "Yeah..."
"So whose up there already?" Jason asked him.
"Uh... Everyone aside from Adam as far as I can tell." Tyler said with a shrug.
So are you gonna come up with us or stay here?" Ty asked.
Tyler shook his head "If Adam hasn't shown up yet then he needs to be let in. Just let me know if he's already there. I don't want to be out here any longer than I have to be." He said, shivering slightly.
After a moment, Ty sighed and nodded "If you say so... Come on Jason." He said starting to walk up the track towards the ski lodge.
Jason smiled at Tyler and said "See you up there..." Before turning and following Ty.
Tyler waved goodbye to the two before returning back to the bench and scrolling through his phone once more. He hoped Adam would show up soon. He really didn't want to freeze to death tonight.
-------
Mitch groaned as he opened the gate and gazed up at the lodge, which was still quite far up the path and across a roofed bridge.
"I don't remember the path being this long..." He muttered.
Jerome walked up next to him and shrugged, slinging his bag over his shoulder "You'd think the lodge would be built next to the station."
Mitch smirked and nodded. "Yeah, but there probably better value further up of something... Who knows..."
Jerome smiled and began to walk ahead, towards the bridge "Well come on slow poke." To which Mitch responded by racing up to walk next to him with a laugh.
Jerome was wearing his normal business suit as his fur was making sure he never felt the cold while Mitch wore his normal clothes along with a large black jacket to keep the cold out.
The two eventually came to the bridge and began to walk through it without hesitation.
"Feels weird coming back here, doesn't it?" Mitch said, looking at the Bacca, whom nodded.
"It's gonna be interesting... That's for sure..." He muttered.
As they came out the other side of the bridge, a figure jumped out from the behind the tree and yelled out.
The sudden jump made both Mitch and Jerome shout and jumped back in fright just as the yell turned into laughter.
Mitch frowned and rolled his eyes when they identified the figure, realising it was only Adam. "Not funny Adam..."
Adam just stood where he was, laughing his head off. He was dressed in his usual outfit, only with a simple dark grey jacket unzipped over his shirt, showing his amulet. "Oh come on... That was hilarious..."
"You gave me a heart attack dude!" Jerome said, laughing as well, quickly forgiving him.
"You're a jerk Adam... You know that?" Mitch said shaking his head at him.
Adam put his hands up in mock defence "Hey, I was just trying to lighten the mood. You looked like you needed it."
"Whatever..." Mitch muttered, rolling his eyes.
"When did you get here?" Jerome asked, smiling.
"Shortly after Ian... I think..." Adam said, with a shrug.
"Wait... Isn't Tyler waiting for him along with Ty and Jason?" Mitch asked, looking at Jerome.
Jerome seemed to think for a minute before nodding "Yeah actually. He is!"
Adam's eyes widened at this and he swore "Fuck! Well I better not keep him waiting. I'll see you guys up there!" He said, running between the two and back down towards the cable car station.
After a moment of watching Adam disappear down the track, Mitch shook his head and muttered "Yep... Definitely weird to be back..."
Jerome just smirked and nodded "Couldn't agree more..." He said, as the two turned and continued on their path.
---------
Quentin stood on a small ledge where pair of tourist binoculars sat on the fence post. He was looking through it, trying to spot anything interesting in the snowy forest.
The Mudkip was dressed in his usual clothes due to the fact he was a water type and therefore didn't feel the cold as easily.
He began to zoom in on an area as he noticed a large figure around the dark trees. He began to zoom in on it, thinking it was a bear, when a large pair of dark brown eyes suddenly popped out in front on the lenses, staring him down.
"GAH!" Quentin cried out, stumbling away from the binoculars and panting heavily as laughter filled his ears.
He turned and sighed when he saw Jerome standing behind the binoculars and holding onto the fence, laughing.
"Goddammit Jerome!" Quentin yelled at him, but not before cracking a smile of his own "You scared the crap out of me!"
Mitch came up next the Mudkip and smirked "Good to see you too Fish."
Quentin rolled his eyes "For the hundredth time, it's amphibian, not fish..."
Jerome laughed and took Quentin's place by looking through the binoculars "And for the hundredth time, we don't care... So what were you looking at?"
Quentin stood up and went over to the Bacca "Well I was looking to see if I saw a bear or not but I'm pretty sure you scared it away."
"You mean you scared it away with your girly screaming." Mitch said leaning on the fence, not noticing or caring about the large drop behind him.
Quentin rolled his eyes again "Whatever... I'm pretty sure Ian's waiting for us so let's go." He muttered, grabbing his bag and heading down the stairs.
"Well lezz go!" Mitch said with a smile as he and the Bacca followed the fish down to the lodge.
-------
Tyler shivered as he flicked through his phone, turning it off occasionally to see if the cable car was coming with anybody, but no one showed up.
"I seriously hope he didn't cancel on this..." He muttered to himself, taking his phone out for the twelfth time. Frankly the only thing that was surprising him at this point was that his phone still had a lot of charge on it.
Before he could look anything up on it however, a snow smacked against the wooden wall beside him, sending snow out and covering his face in it.
Tyler helped and looked at the splattered snow ball and then turned to look at the direction of where it had been thrown. At the sight of the thrower, his shocked expression turned into a smirk. "Oh you did not just do that."
Adam smirked as he tossed a second snowball between his hands "We have you surrounded Janet! Come out with your hands up." He yelled in a cowboy accent.
Tyler smirked and pocketed his phone, standing up and slowly putting his hands up as he walked out of the station, calling out in his Janet voice "Alright sweet pea. I'm coming."
As he neared the entrance, he scanned the surroundings of the clearing outside the station, taking note of several park benches and a few broken stumps around the area.
When he reached outside, he immediately took off in a run towards the nearest park bench, Adam shouting out behind him "Oh no you don't!" hurling his snowball at the boy and hitting him in the back.
Despite being hit, Tyler scrambled behind the bench with a laugh, kneeling down and forming a snowball of his own. He knelt up carefully and scanned the area to see where Adam was, eventually catching him behind one of the stumps.
Adam cautiously stood up with a new snowball and searched for Tyler "You can't hide forever..."
Tyler smirked and quickly stood up, hurling the snowball at him and catching him directly in the face. Adam stumbled back with a yelp and brushed snow off his face. While he did so, Tyler took the opportunity to make another snowball and take off running behind a stump.
Adam shook his head and smirked "Oh you're gonna pay for that..." He muttered, readying another snowball.
"Good luck with that." Tyler called out, waiting for Adam to show himself.
Finally, he smiled as he noticed Adam dash across the clearing for new cover, giving him the opportunity to pelt him in the side with his snowball.
Tyler ducked under the snowball and laughed. Before Adam had time to recover, he threw a third, hitting his face once again.
"Ok, ok! Truce?" Adam called out, putting his hands up in surrender as he dusted snow off his face for the second time.
Tyler laughed and dropped the snowball onto the ground "Very well... If you insist..." He said holding out his hand with a smirk.
Adam smirked and shook hands with him "So can we go up to the lodge now?"
Tyler rolled his eyes and nodded "Fine, and you owe me for making me wait for you for so long."
"Hey, it's not my fault you thought I wasn't here!"
Tyler smirked "Whatever... I'm freezing so let's go."
Adam smiled and nodded as the two friends began the long trek up to the lodge .
