Chapter Three
The screen came to life and Nathan's eyes met the calm features of Borgina's face. She was staring straight at him.
"Welcome, Nathan."
It was the programmed message Borgina read every time he turned his computer on. He had tried to change it several times in the past, and failed woefully at it. In his opinion, something like "Hey, Nate" or "How's it going?" will make him feel cooler than a generic "Welcome, Nathan" but for some reason, Borgina stuck with it. He concluded it was a bug in his operating system code that was preventing him from making that change because everyone he knew had successfully changed theirs. His inability to do something so basic made him feel like the dumbest one among his group of friends... and Nathan was very far from being dumb. He was one of the brightest minds the world had produced, at least that's what was written on the award for ingenuity he received back at the university.
"Don't tell us you can't fix a little glitch in an operating system," his friends had teased.
That comment hurt his pride more than anything. He was a brilliant computer scientist, the valedictorian of his set. He was going to have an operating system refresh but his attachment to Borgina had stopped him.
"Thanks, Borg." He replied, pulling his mind back to the present.
"Where will you like to start today?" She asked.
"From the part where you became invincible," he replied, referencing her earlier ability to remain active even after shutdown.
Borgina laughed before replying.
"I'd really like to start with that but you're supposed to be studying the MoonEx documentation right now. The Ruling Council have very strict sanctions for disobedience."
"We both know I'm not one to follow the rules blindly." He protested.
"...and we both know I'd never let you die." She countered, smiling. "Why don't I tell you all you need to know about MoonEx and after that, we can delve into the other details you're interested in. Does that work for you?"
Nathan smiled. This was one of the many things he loved about Borgina. She was smart enough to modify the instructions passed to her and it was very typical of her to look out for him. It was also the reason he couldn't let go of her, especially when he knew he could live with the very small glitch of an unchangeable welcome message.
