Hopping on my motorbike, I drove to the pub I liked to patronize the most. Since it wasn't yet evening, only ten people were around. I slipped onto the stool at the counter.
“Whisky.” I said to Beatrice, the woman behind the counter.
“Right away.” She butted her eyelashes at me seductively.
I looked away. Beatrice and I had fucked a month ago, and she'd since been trying to get me back into her bed. I wasn't particularly in the mood to fuck right now.
She delivered the shot of whisky soon. I swallowed it in one gulp and ordered for a second.
I couldn't stop thinking about Montse. I shouldn't have spoken to her the way I had done. She was just being her normal self and it wasn't her fault that I was in a terrible mood.
Beatrice regaled me with jokes and flirthy conversations while I stayed until it was night and people began to troop in. The club soon became busy with music and yelling men and strippers on the stages.
I wasn't interested in being part of them, nor was I particular fascinated with the strippers but I had to admit they knew their job well.
My plans of leaving soon was just about to be thrown away.
Because I wasn't immersed in what the strippers were doing, I was probably the only one who noticed as a man in suit came out from the hallway that led to the private rooms where customers could rent for a time to fuck each other or the strippers.
He was followed by two burly men who looked to be his bodyguards. What made suspicion hit me was the woman held between the bodyguards. She was struggling to keep up with them and was practically being dragged. She also seemed to be begging them.
Something was definitely wrong. My intuition was proved right when a guy stumbled from the hallway. He had blood all over his face and looked like he'd been beaten badly. He couldn't even stand properly on his feet.
Taking the last gulp of my tequila, I got up to my feet and slowly wove my way through the men until I got to the guy.
He flinched backwards when his eyes fell on me. He looked very beaten and so afraid. “Are you here to finish me off?”
“Where are they taking her?" I asked calmly.
The guy hesitated before speaking. “I don't know. That man is so obsessed with my Maria." He spoke frantically. “He doesn't get that she's left him, and when he found out she's been seeing me, he went on ballistic. He said she's now soiled herself and he has no use for her anymore. He's going to kill her. I just know it. Please help her if you can.”
Immediately, I turned and began storming out of the nightclub. There was no time to waste. I could hear the man struggling to keep up with me.
I turned to him. “Did you bring a car?”
He nodded and pointed with his chin. “It's over there."
It was an ash Toyota Corolla that looked like it had seen better days. When I stretched out my hand, he dropped the keys in them without having to be told.
As soon as I stepped, I went straight to to car. Unlocking the door, I entered the car. Turning the ignition, I waited patiently for the guy to get into the car.
“That's his car!” The man pointed at a Masserati moving down the road.
A car was approaching on the lane behind us but I cut in front of it. I could hear the driver hurling insults at me as I zoomed down the road.
Just so the bad guys wouldn't be suspicious, I made sure to follow at a safe distance.
“What are you doing?” The guy in my car yelled. “We'll never catch up with them if you don't step on the pedal!”
Gritting my teeth, I sent him a quick glare. I continued following their car at a distance until they took a sharp curve down another street. I quickly stepped on the accelerator and soon rounded the curve. Luckily, they were still in sight.
I realized that they were taking the highway on the remote road that led to even remote places. I knew somewhere along the hallway, there was a deserted piece of land with a warehouse. My instincts told me they were going there.
I slowed down even more than before. The guy in my car looked at me with alarm. “Why are you slowing down? They are going to disappear from our sight!”
“Shut up and let me do this.” I growled at him.
He stayed silent but the panic never left his face. I waited for five minutes when their car was long gone from our sight before stepping up the speed.
I took the curve that led to the deserted piece of land. True to my intuition, I could see their car from a distance parked beside the warehouse.
I stepped on the brakes of my car. “Do not get out.” I told the guy sternly before leaving my car to make the rest of the trip on foot.
One of the bodyguards was keeping watch in front of the warehouse. He noticed me as I got nearer to the warehouse. His ugly face set into a fierce scowl that made him look uglier.
“I don't know who the fuck you think you are,” he growled. “but if you know what's good for you, you will turn and walk out of this place.”
He brushed his suit aside, revealing the gun stuck behind his belt. If he thought that was going to scare me away, he'd better think again.
I went even closer until there was only a two metre distance between us. “I don't know who the fuck you think you are, but if you know what's good for you, you would go inside and tell your boss to not dare lay a finger on the girl. Else he's dead.”
He scrunched his nose in derison and pulled his gun out. “Let's see who will go to hell first.”
He didn't know that I had my hand on the knife stuck behind my belt on the front. As soon as he raised his gun to shoot, I pulled the knife out of it's sheath and lunged at him.
The knife plunged into his hand, forcing him to drop his pistol as he yelled in pain. I pulled my gun which I had stuck behind me under my belt.
“Yes, we're just about to see who's going to hell first.”
“Fuck you! Fuck you...”
I delivered a clear shot of bullet to his head, knowing it was going to send him straight to hell. His body fell down with a thud and blood spilled from his forehead. I went and pulled my knife out of his lifeless hand.
I knew that soon, the other guard was going to come out to see what the hell was going on. I quickly ran forward and flattened my back against the wall just beside the opening of the warehouse.
“Duval, what the fuck is going on?” The other guard demanded. He paused when he saw Duval on the floor, and he seemed to be about to ran to him when he froze again.
I knew right then that he'd seen me from the corner of his eyes.
Too late.
Before he could even turn, I plowed my knife through his neck. He gasped as he went down, and I kicked the gun out of his hand. I pulled my knife out of his neck, and he began to bleed profusely.
Now it was time to deal with the boss himself. I slowly made my way inside the warehouse. What I saw made my blood boil.
There was a large transparent glass container which appeared to be gradually filling up with water. The woman was inside that glass, hands and feet tied.
The water had reached her chin and I knew it wouldn't take long for it to climb her completely and suffocate. She looked terrified. The boss was sitting on a swivel chair in front of the container, enjoying watching her suffer. The bastard.
I would've shot the glass container to release the water but I had other plans.
“Tiger, what the fuck is going on outside there?” He asked without turning to look. He was obviously talking to his second bodyguard.
“Hello there, Mr. Who-ever-you-are.”
At my voice, he spun around on his chair to face me. A frown marred his brow. “Who the fuck are you?"
“Il fantasma. You may or may not have heard about me. I'm here to teach you a lesson.”
“Whoever the fuck you are, you better get out before my bodyguards....”
“Your guards are dead.” I stalked over to him grabbed him by the collar, punching him on the mouth.
“What the heck do you want?” He screamed. There was fear in his voice, and it pleased me.
“When a woman says it's no, you fucking accept it's no.” I said through gritted teeth. “You don't fucking decide to kill her because she has moved with another guy.”
Why were crimes of passion increasing so much?
I headbutted him, leaving him to fall on the ground. He reached into his suit and brought out a gun. I kicked it from his hand before he could fire. Then I beat him. As badly as he had beaten the woman's guy.
By now the water had climbed up the woman's head, and she was drowning. I saw chair standing beside the container. Hopping on it, I helped the woman out of the water.
I laid her gently on the ground as she coughed water. I untied her hand and her feet then. Getting up, I walked over to the man who was lying on the floor and groaning from the beatings I'd given him.
He stared at me in anger and bitterness but he didn't seem to have the energy to resist as I tied up his hands and legs. Holding him by the neck and his waist, I hoisted him up and walked over to the chair beside the tank.
Climbing it, I tossed him into the water. He began to wiggle violently in the water as he drowned. I could only smirk in satisfaction.
How better to kill a murderer than using his own method?
“Maria. Maria, darling.” The frantic voice came from the guy I'd ordered not to leave the car as he rushed to his woman's side. “I thought he'd killed you.”
They kissed and hugged so affectionately I nearly rolled my eyes. “You guys go wait for me in the car. I'll be out in a minute.”
The guy looked at the man in the water with a triumphant look before quickly taking Maria out of there.
I sat on the swivel chair and watched as he continued to struggle in the water, until he finally died.
One less murderer in this town.
