Chapter 21

Teenage girl commits suicide on the dawn of a new year!

A 15 year old girl, pupil of Manchester Preparatory High School, whose parents have asked for her name to remain anonymous, died from severe trauma after falling from Manchester Town Clock Tower.

The girl, whose parents claimed she suffered from various severe mental health problems, intentionally jumped two days ago after mourning for several months over the death of a close friend.

Four fellow students were also reported to have witnessed the event, but have been cleared of all charges and have resumed their normal life as they return to school today, on Monday.

A shaking hand carefully folded the stiff newspaper and placed it on the seat next to her.

The girl slowly stood up, stumbling slightly as the bus shuddered to a stop.

She grabbed her bag and slung it over her shoulder then took careful steps out of the folding door and began walking, almost mechanically, towards a pair of looming gates.

A loud voice slashed through the girls silent thoughts, causing her to look up in surprise.

"Mahnoor! Are you okay? How's life?"

Mahnoor smiled absentmindedly, "I'm fine... just sad to be back in school, y'know?"

Oliwia nodded, "Same, But did you see the news today?"

"Oh, yeah... I feel so terrible..."

"I don't! At least we're not going back to jail! My mum would be angry if she had to get me out of there for the fourth time... or maybe it's my fifth time?"

"But don't you feel bad about what we did? We're guilty! We pushed her out of the window and yet... the police don't seem to care!" Mahnoor exclaimed in surprise and frustration.

Oliwia stopped and frowned, "Wait... what? Are we talking about the same thing?" She rolled her eyes then pulled out her phone and showed Mahnoor the screen.

"Read this. I can't believe you haven't read it already!"

Mahnoor took the phone anxiously and began reading.

Killer finally caught... and it's not a 15 year old girl?

Adam Milton, a 28 year old Geography teacher at Manchester Preparatory High school, confessed to the murder of 14 year old Fiona Filipowski, a student of his, on the 1st January.

The previous suspects, four 14-15 year old girls who also attended Manchester Preparatory, will remain under police supervision until Adam Milton is released from questioning later today.

Adam Milton, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol as he made his confession, was described by a former student as....

Mahnoor handed the phone back to Oliwia and closed her eyes.
"I can't read anymore."

Oliwia sighed and continued walking side by side with Mahnoor.
"I thought you'd be happy. We've found the murderer, case closed right? I always knew there was something wrong with him..."

"The case isn't closed!" A voice behind them suddenly shouted out and the two girls span around to see Abir standing behind them.

She quickly caught up to them and continued speaking.

"He can't be the murderer. It's not possible. You read the article; He was drunk when he made his confession."

"It doesn't matter, if he's arrested, then we're not suspects anymore! Look, let's just get to our first lesson and forget about this whole thing." Oliwia muttered as she steered the girls towards the approaching building.

A few minutes later they arrived at their classroom and casually walked to their seats near the back of the class.

The first lesson of the day was ICT, which meant that they wouldn't have to do any work for about 15 minutes, as that was usually how long it took for their teacher, Miss Yenwod, to arrive.

Usually the girls would spend those 15 minutes tormenting Fiona or Maddie by sending them creepy annoying emails but as they were both dead the girls had nothing to do, other than sit there and think.

The problem of sitting in silence for 15 minutes is that you get a lot of time to think. To think that maybe all those people were right, that maybe you are a liar, that maybe you are a murderer, maybe even a psychopath. Self-defence or not, Maddie is dead - And so is Fiona.

"I AM HERE!" Everyone in the class turned to look at the late arrival "Sorry I am late! I..Ehm.. got lost?"

The three girls turned to look at Alice, but instead of happily greeting her, they just gave her a nod of acknowledgement. Quickly Alice rushed to her seat.

Right at that moment Miss Yenwod entered the classroom "What are you all doing sitting there?! Cmon girls get to work! Oh and I hope you all had a good holidays practising coding every day"

"Well actually miss, My boyfriend Steven and I spent the holidays..."

"I don't care Barbara! Do your work!" She shouted and then she assigned the work to the rest of the class "Everyone make a code on python for something, I have to go now but I'll be back in 5 minutes"

Everyone knew that their teacher would be gone for the whole of the lesson, meaning they had a whole period to do whatever they wanted.

"What does she mean by something?!She needs to tell us more!" Abir sounded annoyed as she opened up the program on her computer

"Are you really going to do work?" Alice asked her friend as Mahnoor kept staring into the classroom on the other side.

"Yes? She's coming back soon and I'm not wasting my lunch, I need to go basketball" Abir started typing some random code as the other two stared at Mahnoor.

"Mahmood! Why are you staring at Mr Dickmans classroom? Can you see some drug dealing over there that you're so into?" Oliwia asks and pushes her friend gently to get a response

"It was just a-"

"Drugs!I want some!" Alice interrupted Mahnoor

"It was just a? A what?" Abir joined in wanting to know more

"Nothing." She quickly says and turns on Python pretending that she is doing some work.

Suddenly, on all four computers an email notification notification, distracting the girls from Mahnoor odd behavior. They all stared at the computer screen and opened the email from an anonymous person.

All it said was "Every breath you take.. Every step you make.. I'll be watching you." With a video attached to it.

The girls glanced at each other and then, without speaking simultaneously clicked the play button.

The video came to life. And before the girls could process what was happening they were reliving a moment they could never forget.

New years eve. 10 seconds till midnight.

They could see the expression of anger and fury on their faces.

They could see the hand reaching out to Maddie.

They could see Mahnoor push Maddie through the clock face as the clock struck midnight.

"I KILLED HER! ITS MY FAULT! I KILLED HER!" Mahnoor started mumbling as Maddie's body fell.

She closed her eyes, her shoulders shaking as she tried to block the memory from her mind.

Abir stared without speaking before collapsing into her chair.

"Abir! Mahnoor! This is all my fault! Maddie came after me and you only tried to protect me!" Alice exclaimed miserably.

Oliwia was the only who remained calm as the video came to an end.

"I can't believe they said it was suicide. We really dodged the bullet there!"

She looked around at her grief stricken friends, frowning at their unexpected reaction.

"Why are you guys so sad? Two great things happened today! We got rid of Maddie and Mr Milton confessed!"

"I can't believe he confessed. It can't be possible. We'll go to geography and... he'll be there as usual." Alice muttered anxiously.

"We killed her Oliwia! We killed her!!" Mahnoor screamed out.

"We didn't do anything Mahnoor we couldn't stop her from jumping!" Oliwia muttered annoyedly and closed the video.

"We killed her!" Mahnoor shouted, not realizing that the class had gone silent as Mrs Yenwod entered the classroom.

"Oh god, will you four little psychos ever shut up?" She sounded annoyed as she sat down and gave the whole class a glare "Get out of here! You are going to be late."

"Let's go to Geography guys, we will try to find out who sent this video later..." Oliwia stood up and waited for her friends to do the same.

"We killed her.." Mahnoor kept whispering as they all walked out from the classroom and headed to the next lesson with Mr Milton.

"He's not going to be there. He confessed to murder" Oliwia stated happily as they walked through the corridor.

"That could have been another guy called Adam that confessed, the news is always fake these days" One of them argued

"Yeah, I'm sure he will be here.. he was drunk when he 'confessed' right?" Mahnoor asked finally saying something not related to Maddie's untimely death.

"He should be here, we were meant to be doing something fun toda-" Abir stops as she sees a Cover Teacher in their Geography classroom.

"Where is he? What happened to Mr Milton?" They all asked the teacher as they walk in through the door.

"You four should know." The teacher mumbled quietly, not looking the girls in the eye.
"Sit down"

They headed to their table at the back and took a seat as everyone in the classroom turned to stare at them.

A few moments later the Cover teacher started talking and explaining the work they were meant to do.

"He's not here..It's all our fault" Mahnoor whispered towards her friends as she opened her book.

"It's not our fault Mahnoor"

"He might actually be guilty"

"He didn't have to confess"

They all said it at the same time and looked at the teacher that was walking towards them.

"Girls, do you mind paying attention to the lesson?" She asked with a scowl and walked back to the board at the front.

Abir listened to the teacher and started writing notes down in her book and Alice copied her. Mahnoor kept staring at the blank piece of paper and Oliwia was hiding her phone underneath the table.

"You've killed two my friends. Are you going to kill me next?" Sharon appeared from somewhere and placed some worksheets on their table.

"We didn't kill anyone!" Oliwia shouted as Sharon walked away back to her table.

The class suddenly got silent and looked at them again.

"Wow, I feel famous" Oliwia muttered and started noting stuff in her book.

"We are famous Liv, for committing a crime" Abir carried on with her work not even looking at what happened.

"How can you be so calm? We killed someone!" Alice got annoyed at Abir.

"Did we?" She looked at Alice "We should stay calm, they can't do anything to us... they have no proof and apparently they are watching us" She carried on calmly

"No proof?! Really?! What about that video in which we clearly pushed her?! The FF wannabe has hold of that video!!" Mahnoor gritted.

"Yeah I guess that's bad... wait did you just say FF wannabe?!" Oliwia span around to stare at Mahnoor.

"Isn't it obvious? That person, the one that keeps sending us ominous messages and videos, they can't be FF."

"How can you be so sure?" Alice looked up and asked skeptically.

"FF's dead. One of us killed her-"

"It could have been anyone! It might be Mr Milton for all we know!"

"No... it must've... well....I think it was one of us. And anyway, whoever killed her, we know she's dead. Her body was taken from the Police Station!" Mahnoor sighed as she tried to explain.

"Yeah... we never really talked about why someone would steal her body from the morgue." Abir added absentmindedly as she continued writing in her notebook.

"Probably to cover up something, but that's beside the point! I just don't think that this FF is Fiona." Mahnoor shrugged.

"Well, Fiona can't have been the only person to have the initials F and F. What about her sister, Filippa?" Oliwia added as she looked around the classroom, searching for someone who might have the initials F.F.

"Or it could just mean fake friend or... famous food?" Alice said slowly.

"We'll find a way to see who 'FF' really is, we could hack the emails or something." Mahnoor spoke up determinedly.

Abir opened her mouth and was just about to speak when a harsh voice stopped her.

"Will you four girls please listen when I speak to you! You are being completely disrespectful! Turn to the front and write down what's on the board, like everyone else is doing." The cover teacher growled at the girls, causing the class the giggle at their discomfort.

"You will be staying behind at break as well for not listening to my warning." The teacher added, then muttered under her breath, "Horrible little murderers..."

The girls rushed to grab their pencils and began writing down the paragraphs on the board.

"I can't believe she's given us detention. And did you hear what she called us?!" Oliwia muttered angrily.

"We should sue her for abuse." Alice whispered matter-of-factly.

"Abir was actually doing her work as well! This is completely unfair!"

"I never thought I'd say this, but I wish Mr Milton was here instead."

"We should go to the police station after school and find out what's happening, we deserve to know whether the case has been solved or not."

"QUIET! That's detention for you four! The rest of the class can go now." The teacher called out and the four girls fell silent, dreading the rest of the day, their minds working furiously to try and make sense of everything that had happened.

The rest of the class hurry to their feet, grabbing their bags as they exit the classroom.

The teacher, who had written her name down as Mrs Badcock, scowled at the girls before standing up.

"You four stay here and continue writing down these paragraphs. I need to go smoke a cigarette..." The teacher muttered as she left the room.

"Wow. What if the fire alarm goes off? We might die!" Alice called out as the door slammed shut.

"Fuck this paragraph. Lets use this detention for something useful!" Oliwia exclaimed whilst throwing her page in the bin.

"I feel so prejudiced... how can this teacher hate us so much?" Abir mumbled sadly, but continued to write.

"Because she thinks we've killed two of our fellow students. She thinks we're serial killers!" Mahnoor replied with a sigh, her hand shaking slightly.

Meanwhile, Oliwia had made her way towards the front of the class, to the front desk.

She sat down at the desk and switched on the computer.

Alice frowned and walked over to where Oliwia was sat.

"What are you doing?"

"I hacked the email to find the IP address of whoever this 'FF' is."

"Then we can use the IP to reveal the true identity of FF!" Alice exclaimed as she understood what Oliwia was doing.

"Exactly, But guess what? The IP address of the person is the exact same as the schools IP address!" Oliwia said excitedly.

Mahnoor wandered over, leaving Abir to finish her work.

"So... does that mean that the person pretending to be FF... has been sending these emails from school?" Mahnoor said as she leaned over and looked at the computer.

"Possibly. That means that they could be another student or a teacher or..." Oliwia agreed.

"Or a janitor! They see everything and no one notices them!" Alice muttered excitedly.

They were about to continue discussing the strange mystery when the door was thrown open and the a large woman stormed inside the classroom.

"What are you doing on my computer?!"

The girls freeze and slowly look up to the enraged face of Mrs Babcock.

"Um... we... were trying to find the answers to..." Oliwia quickly tried to explain as the three of them stepped away from the computer and back towards their desks.

"To what? You were supposed to copy up those PowerPoints! That's another half hour for you four and I'll see you at lunch as well!"

The teacher growls as she walks up to her desk and sits down, watching the girls intently while they grab their pens and continue writing.

"We'll have to find another time to continue investigating who this FF is..." Oliwia whispers, hurriedly writing in her dog-eared book.

"I can't believe we've got to stay behind at lunch as well! What a bitch!" Mahnoor mutters angrily.

"Let's just focus on this work and try not to get in trouble again... I can't risk having to stay behind after school as well!" Alice mumbles anxiously.

"Why do I have to stay behind? I was doing my work!" Abir questions as she finishes her paragraph and closes her book.

The teacher glances up and glares at the girls for a moment before looking back at her computer screen.

The girls sighed simultaneously and looked down at their books, hurriedly writing down line after line, their minds excitedly trying to unravel the mystery of the anonymous 'FF'.
