By sunhigh, they'd left the Twolegplace. All of them stuck close together, wary of the crackling leaves and dappled shadows of the unfamiliar forest.

"Sunshine?" Jewelkit mewed. "I don't like it here."

"It's okay," Sunshine assured her. "Nothing is going to hurt you."

"I'm going to try to hunt," Midnightrain said. "Everyone else, stay here. Foxhunt, you're in charge."

"Got it," Foxhunt meowed.

Midnightrain bounded off.

Hunting in the forest proved to be significantly more difficult than hunting in the Twolegplace. Midnightrain kept scaring off prey by stepping on dead leaves or twigs. Finally, she returned to the others. "I can't catch anything," she admitted.

"I tried, too," Sunshine said. "We came up with a plan."

Foxhunt explained her plan. Midnightrain agreed, and together they located a squirrel. Silently, they surrounded it.

Midnightrain flicked her tail. They all darted in and pounced at the same time.

They collided in a heap. Midnightrain stood up, dazed, and noticed the squirrel unconscious on the forest floor. With a mew, she nipped its neck, killing it.

"We got it?" Sunshine asked.

"We got it!" Foxhunt cheered. Midnightrain lifted it and carried it back to the others.

The kits ate first. Although they didn't leave much, it was a big squirrel and they were all relatively satisfied.

"Let's keep moving," Midnightrain said. "Okay?"

"Alright," Lavenderhaze agreed. "Let's go."

"But I'm tired!" Blankkit complained.

"We'll give you badger-rides," Sunshine said. He knelt and let Snowkit clamber onto his back. Lavenderhaze and Midnightrain did the same. Jewelkit clutched Lavenderhaze's fur, and Blankkit clung to Midnightrain.

They walked until sunset, switching kits periodically, when Foxhunt collapsed dramatically and declared she couldn't walk another pawstep. Jewelkit tumbled off of her back.

"We have to keep moving!" Midnightrain protested. "Come on, you guys!"

"We can't," Lavenderhaze insisted. "Come on, Midnightrain, we're exhausted!"

Midnightrain sighed. "Alright," she meowed. "Come on, we can sleep under that bush."

They crawled under the bush and passed out.
