chapter 35
As the sun began to set, I saw the world go by from the passenger seat. The sunset tones of orange and pink bathed the area in an ethereal and peaceful ambience. Claud's strong hands clutched the wheel, his intense countenance mirroring my own nervous anticipation of what was in store for us at this remote home.
The dirt under the tyres crunched as we drew into the driveway, disrupting the stillness of the forest. The mansion loomed before us, its worn exterior betraying clues about its history. There were peeling patches of paint and what looked like weathered shingles on the roof. It seemed like an ancient artefact, unaffected by the hectic speed of today's world.
As we approached, the sound of rustling leaves on adjacent trees provided a pleasant accompaniment. Both thrill and curiosity welled up within of me. Who lived here? How long would I be staying here for? The unknown captivated me, and my mind raced with questions.
Claud shut off the engine, and we were left in complete stillness once again. We paused for a while in the vehicle to take in the quiet scenery. The sun was almost below the horizon, creating a smoky afterglow. A wave of peace and relief from the turmoil of the outer world washed over me.
Turning to Claud, I smiled, my eyes filled with anticipation. "Well, here we are," I said, my voice hushed as if not to disturb the tranquil atmosphere. "Let's see what this mysterious house has in store for us."
Claud nodded and opened the vehicle door for me, and I got in. When my feet hit the gravel, the quiet crunch reverberated through the silence. Each step brought us closer to the home and the mysteries that lay inside. As we approached the entrance, I took a big breath, feeling both excited and nervous.
The door opened with a groan and revealed a dimly lighted room. The dust and musty smell of antiquity added to the mysterious atmosphere within the mansion. The door slammed shut behind us as we entered, enclosing us forever behind its crumbling walls.
I first heard footsteps above us, the floorboards creaking under the rapid pressure it was exposed to. I craned my neck up, as though I could see through the ceiling itself. I followed the small thumping of the floor, all the way to where they ended at the end of the stairs.
And there stood a young woman, around my age or maybe even younger. Her eyes widened in surprise as she laid eyes upon us, as if our arrival had caught her off guard. Her dark hair cascaded in loose waves around her shoulders, framing a face that seemed both innocent and wise beyond her years.
I exchanged a curious glance with Claud, silently questioning who this person could be. As we approached her cautiously, she took a step forward, her gaze filled with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.
"Hello," I greeted her softly, trying to ease the tension in the air. "Do you live here?" What stupid question. I looked at her fleece pyjamas and dark socks. Clearly this was her home, albeit very old and rusty looking.
She hesitated for a moment, as if contemplating her response. Finally, a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips, and she nodded. "Yes, this house has been my sanctuary for as long as I can remember. We rarely receive visitors, especially ones who arrive at sunset."
We? Who else was here? I was beyond eager to see them.
Her voice held a hint of mystery, matching the enigmatic aura that surrounded the house itself. I couldn't help but be intrigued by her presence. What stories did she hold within her? What secrets did she know about this place?
Claud, ever the social butterfly, extended his hand in greeting. "Hi, I'm Claud."
The girl raised one perfect eyebrow and bounced down the stairs. She reached for Claud's extended hand and, to my complete horror, smacked it away. "As if I'd touch those paws of yours."
Claud let out a chuckle. "It's always a pleasure to meet new people, Ditz"
The girl, Ditz?, glowered at Claud. "That isn't my name, you imbecile."
"Oh, you're using big words now?"
The tension in the air thickened as Ditz's glare intensified. Her eyes narrowed, and she took a step closer to Claud, their banter growing more intense by the second. I watched, torn between amusement and concern, unsure of the history between these two.
Ditz clenched her fists, her voice laced with frustration. "My name is Emma. I must really have changed for you to not recognise me Claud."
As Emma stood before Claud, her true identity revealed, a profound shock washed over him. His eyes widened, and his jaw dropped slightly, a mix of disbelief and awe etched across his face. The passage of time seemed to freeze in that moment as memories flooded back, carrying him to a different era.
Speech escaped Claud's lips, leaving him momentarily incapable of forming coherent words. "Emma? I... I'm sorry, I didn't realize. It's been so long since we've seen each other."
Emma's anger softened, replaced by a glimmer of vulnerability. "It's been years, Claud. Years since we were friends. You disappeared without a trace, leaving me wondering what happened to you."
His gaze lingered on Emma, taking in every detail of her transformed appearance. The perfect arch of her eyebrow, once a familiar quirk, now held a trace of defiance. Her eyes, once filled with warmth and trust, now reflected a mixture of hurt and guarded vulnerability. Claud's heart sank as he witnessed the effects of his absence.
Claud swallowed hard, his voice finally finding its way back to him. "Emma," he managed to whisper, his voice laced with remorse and regret. "I... I can't believe it's you. I never meant to... to disappear like that."
Emma's eyes, softened by a hint of longing, met Claud's gaze. The depths of her emotions were difficult to read, a blend of unresolved pain and the flicker of a desire for understanding. She didn't respond immediately, as if grappling with her own complex feelings.
Claud's face fell, regret etching deep lines on his features. "I know, Emma. Life took unexpected turns, and I lost touch with everyone. But seeing you now, man, it's great. I didn't expect to see you here."
Emma's expression softened, a mixture of hurt and forgiveness shining in her eyes. "Life took unexpected turns as well."
The silence between them hung heavy, pregnant with the weight of their shared history. It was a moment filled with unspoken words and missed connections, where time seemed to stretch, begging for reconciliation.
Finally, Emma broke the silence, her voice trembling slightly. "Claud, you can't undo the past, but perhaps we can find a way to move forward."
Claud's eyes darkened but he did not pry. Maybe because I was standing right next to them?
Emma sighed, her gaze shifting from Claud to me. "And who's this?"
I stepped forward, offering a smile of reassurance. "I'm Ellie. "
Emma studied me for a moment, her eyes searching for sincerity. Slowly, she nodded. "Are you staying?"
"Yes." Claud answered.
"Is she Nate's woman?"
Claud narrowed his eyes and I was taken aback. How did she know that?
Emma's question caught me off guard, and I exchanged a bewildered glance with Claud. It was as if she had glimpsed a secret buried deep within our journey, something we hadn't even fully come to terms with ourselves. I could feel a mix of curiosity and apprehension stirring within me, wondering how Emma had deduced such a personal connection.
Claud's expression hardened, his gaze fixed on Emma. "How did you...?"
Emma's eyes flickered with a hint of knowing, and a faint smile played at the corners of her lips. "I have my ways of uncovering truths, Claud. This sanctuary has a way of bringing hidden stories to the surface. But fear not, your secrets are safe within these walls."
My mind raced, trying to comprehend the implications of Emma's words.
"When he calls, everyone listens. Even the ones not on the call." Emma added, talking about Nate in such a high regard. It was clear she respected him. But how well does she know him? How often does he venture this far to see this place?
Claud pondered Emma's unintentional eavesdropping, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "But wouldn't that be considered eavesdropping in a conventional sense?"
Emma shrugged, a hint of amusement in her eyes. "Perhaps, but it's not intentional. My mind has a tendency to absorb information, like a sponge. It's not something I can control. Call it a side effect of being involved in a cause where every detail matters."
I couldn't help but interject, her voice filled with curiosity and a touch of concern.
"Is privacy not a thing here? I would like to know before I get settled in." I asked.
"The less privacy here, the better. They'll all be up your ass if they could be,"
